🏀 Transfer Portal Recruiting Thread

Duke must be petitioning the NCAA to allow 8 players on the court at once and extending the game to 48 minutes like the NBA to keep all these players happy.

Scheyer has their back

I think Duke has decided that over recruiting current team members and weeding out the bench at the end of each season is a feature and not a bug in their system. Hence I see Kon transferring a la Power a year from now.

Whether he comes to U.Va. is a different story. It will depend on a lot of things (available floor time, players entering the portal, whether it looks like CTB is close to retirement, NIL, Wisconsin X factor, etc.).

Of the 10 new players, only 6 of them are listed at Kon’s position, small forward.

By no means am I defending Scheyer against a reputation that he recruits over even star players… but y’all do realize that Sheffield is being brought in as a glorified practice body, right? He was a role player on bad Rice teams. He’s at Duke to get to wear the uniform on the bench at Cameron, see time in blowouts, and follow up his high value Rice bachelor’s with an equally high value Duke master’s.

It’s a higher profile version of our Lang recruitment, taking a scholarship guy from a much worse D-1 program to improve the quality of the scout team.

Honestly I’m not sure it’s the wrong way to put together a team. Especially for a program that’s essentially been a 1-n-done factory for the past 10 years.

Over recruit you lose a few guys to transfer maybe 1 or 2 the the NBA and you hold on to a few as a core. But it’s a way to accepting that a team is going to lose players to the portal every year so you may as well accumulate as much talent as possible and hopefully the core that stays is over talented overall.

That’s quite a 2-deep projection.

Kinda shows how weird some position labels can be and how pieces don’t always fit together in the pg-sg-sf-pg-c mold

It’ll be interesting how Duke uses Flagg. They’ve built a team around the idea of him as a SF…and he can do that no doubt but he’s A LOT better utilized as a 4 or even small 5.

Their best lineup imo would be Foster Proctor Knueppel Gillis Flagg. Would be hell to guard.

Iron Law of players with positional flexibility: if you find yourself wondering “is [player] better at one position bigger“ the answer is yes.

I agree. I don’t think it’s a bad idea for Duke. What blows my mind is how they convince the “lower tier” high school guys to commit there year after year when there is ample evidence that they will get recruited over multiple times.

I don’t have a lot of faith in their centers, and I think Flagg will be best at the 4, so I think they will run with Brown at the 5 a lot.

My secret hope is that they play Sion James as the backup 3 and Gillis at the 4 with Flagg at the 3 so Kon leaves in a year though.

I memory-holed Thornton’s time there, but probably cause he missed both games against us that season.

It’s as if they’re daring him to leave!

You mean 11. They already have 8 players on the court at once, don’t they? Always 5 on 8 in Cameron…..
