HGN, any thoughts on how Grady picking Kentucky might affect Justin Powell’s recruitment?

I’m sure it’s a major league long shot but we are one of the few schools that would actually make sense for a Kessler/Powell package deal in terms of for sure having playing time available right away at their positions.

Any thoughts or am I just in dream mode? LOL!

I said the medical staff early on (summer/going into pre-season) wanted Jabri to take a more cautious approach. UVA’s medical/training staff have always taken a deliberate approach rehabilitating from foot injuries. There were some drills he didn’t participate in and limiting court time on consecutive days, etc. He was playing catch on learning the Packline as a result and that impacted minutes during early season games.

I dont believe TB is allowing players tu take advantage of their skill set. Im in VA and a top AAU guy said, Every coach in the NCAA would have found a offense or way tu get a talent like Jabri on the court accept TB. TB is not putting players in the best position tu use their talents and succeed. Justin and Casey are the same players. Look how Villanova use Justin. Isolations, pin downs etc. Now look how we use Casey. Running around the perimeter off of base line picks. He is not kyle Guy. Our players can never show they can clear out and create. Our offense is so clogged and bundle up. Its robotic. We need tu have more space and leave Dick Bennett offense in the 90’s. TB need tu hire a TRUE innovative offensive mind coach and get out of the way. Trey Murphy is a 6’9 forward who can handle. Why not isolate him when he has a big on him and let him cook. OR when they have a smaller guy on him. Put him at the high post and have him shoot over the player. Trey is just running around the perimeter taking nothing but jumpers. Why have a kid like Trey and not use what makes him unique. Why is he doing the same thing Sam and Kody are doing. They are not similar players. We show no creativity which lead us tu our most offensive skill team ever, with TB long droughts. I mean its absurd how this team goes on droughts. Especially when you consider who we played. This team should easily avg 72 pts. I mean either every player in TB era are acceptable tu unbelievable offensive droughts OR the team offense is the issue. All I heard was how Sam NEVER misses. All I heard was how his offensive game is the best. Have your seen this player?

Just now getting caught up on this thread. I think this is an interesting point and whether it is completely true or not the implications on the recruiting trail are huge. I agree that we don’t always maximize our players’ offensive strengths, but I see the situation a little differently. I would classify myself as an amateur basketball fan so I appreciate any feedback to my opinion.

I think Tony is somewhat slow to adopt new strategies. I believe that the early TB teams were much more suited to mover-blocker. As recruiting has picked up we have slowly seen a shift in offensive strategy. It seems like there has been more variation in the offensive sets since 2018.

I think the 5 out offense that we have run this year as well as the ball screen offense used a lot last year with Kehei/Jay are Tony’s solution to unclog the lane. I don’t know that we will ever see the iso sets that some schools run under TB, but I’m not sure that we need them either. I think we can be successful with the changes that have been implemented once everyone gets more comfortable with the concepts.

My theory on the Morsell, Jabri, and Murphy situations is that they had too much thrown at them this year. Morsell especially looks uncomfortable on the floor. It seems like he decides what he wants to do before he even gets the ball. This often results in a quick pass or trying to create a shot instead of making the reads and taking what the defense gives him. I can easily see how it could be overwhelming between the focus on installing the packline and learning 4 or 5 different offenses (Blocker-Mover, 5 out, CBS, Triangle/zone) while on a limited practice schedule.

I say all of this with hope that these issues are correctable and with faith that Tony is always doing his best to improve. As always, I really appreciate what you and HoozGotNext bring to the board. I always feel like I learn something reading y’all’s posts.

UK mod”s thought on Powell even after the Grady commit. Wonder if Powell will wait them out or move on. Can’t fault a Kentucky kid wanting to play for UK but that would be a crowed backcourt:

I was told that if UK wants him they get him but may have other targets higher on their board so I guess that’s good news either way.

HGN, I know that their skill sets aren’t one-for-one, but does Jabri transfer change the staff’s calculus with Justin Taylor at all, or was he being recruited exclusively for the role that Isaac McKneely is expected to play?

Reputable poster on The Sabre insinuating that he’s heard McKoy is likely transferring. Take it for what it is…a rumor. But this guy has been right on recruits in the past. Source is apparently a former player.

That would be decidedly not good. Right now he’s the starting 4 looking at 25-30 minutes per game.

Now this is what I want to hear. Wonder how Tony will sell our roster to potential transfers. It’s not as loaded as it was during previous pitches. On one hand that means instant playing time but have to imagine a transfer of this caliber wants to compete for a title. Then again, if we land a guy like Jayden and another impact transfer guard or two that puts us right back in the title conversation
