Transfer tracking

We have more than a recruiting issue. We have an offense that isn’t that fun to play, especially for bigs. Think about it. Unless CTB told McKoy that we’re bringing in an upperclass 4 who will start, Justin was looking at being the starting 4 next year, and getting legit minutes. So why transfer (or at least transfer now before any additions come onboard)? Because being a big in the Blocker Mover isn’t that fun, and doesn’t allow kids to show off their offensive skills.

Well-put! Those programs who invest resources in this evaluation process and securing those assets may benefit tremendously.

Perhaps McKoy didn’t want to be a big at all

I do think it’s time to scrap the mover-blocker (or at least deploy it only in very specific circumstances. We’ve already seen what we can do with a different offense. Our best offensive team won the National Title with CBS as our primary offense.

Not only does the mover-blocker probably hurt our reputation with recruiting, but it simply doesn’t work as well as other offenses.

Even this past season. We looked a lot better when we were using the sets where Huff would screen for Hauser and vice versa at the top of the key. No clue why Tony went almost exclusively mover blocker late in the year. Hard to be effective in that with guards that can’t shoot.

Speculating here, but I think maybe McKoy saw himself in the Hunter mold and the staff saw him in the Wilkins mold so no matter how much PT he would get, it wouldn’t be the type of PT he wanted.

Indeed. Our losses so far this year are peanuts compared to what, say, Florida is going through atm.

That’s the more likely scenario! He probably sees himself as a wing!

While I know this won’t happen and we’ll bring in folks, would be kind of hilarious if our rotation next year was Kihei, Reece, McCorkle, Stattman, Shedrick, Caffaro and Murray. What a weird as hell journey that would be. We’d still probably finish ahead of Boston College though, so there’s that!

It matters little today what we may have missed on. Water under the bridge. Transfer portal has changed recruiting forever. No longer will programs be held hostage by high school recruits that have no earned equity at the college level dictating terms. Now coaches have other options. I like the possibilities of both player and coaching staff making a more informed decision from each perspective out of the transfer portal.

Great point. I completely agree. Thinking about all those kids who, in a normal year, would have blown up on the summer circuit before their senior year but didn’t get the chance to shine last year. Some may have found the right spot, but others may not have, and they’ll be on the transfer market next year.

I’ve also wondered how much “recruiting time” transfer recruiting takes away from what the coaches normally do this time of year. The more time spent on transfer recruiting, the less on HS recruiting. I would think a program that can effectively balance both will come out ahead.

I think it was clear we are looking for a more athletic 4 to play and that McKoy was not going to be the starter next year.

Doubt it will be more because the 2021 kids won’t have an extra year and everyone who transfers this year will have to sit out if they transfer a second time. Will still be high though because of the lack of evaluation like you said.

Or McKoy didn’t want to be a 4 at all :man_shrugging:

I’ve been saying this for years, well said

Neither the offense nor the defense is fun. Every single player has said their least favorite part of practice is the 3 on 3 closeout on defense drill.
Would love to see some mixing it up and going for more steals with a more athletic 5 at times on the floor.

Most successful period in the history of Virginia basketball. The most successful ACC program in the last 8-10 years? “Throw it all away.” lol

Evolve or die

Not saying we should burn it all down, but sometimes what’s always worked in the past won’t work in the future

The current recruits were 5-6 years old when Joe Harris committed

Times change, society changes, kids’ expectations change
