If you are a military buff… Fort Jackson is right there! Close enough to take your hand grenade along… you may forget about your visit to Fort Jackson with the hand grenade though…
Been over 10 years, but that was my first recommendation too. Only 3 places I distinctly remember from New Orleans: Cochon/Cochon Butcher, Commander’s Palace and Willie Mae’s Scotch House for fried chicken.
Clancy’s for locals’ fine dining (get the crab-stuffed smoked softshell if available - see photo below): https://www.clancysneworleans.com/
Peche - make a reservation now - we go to Peche every time we go to NOLA
For sure get a fried baloney sandwich at Turkey and the Wolf!
Photos:
At the counter at Liuzza’s By the Track: gumbo, etouffe, duck tenders, shrimp po’ boy - be prepared for a line (forget weekends), walk around the very cool neighborhood while you wait
Delicious frozen bourbon sidecar, happy hour at Superior Seafood
crawfish at Frankie and Johnny’s
crab-stuffed softshell at Clancy’s - biggest softshell I’ve ever seen
much bigger than it looks whole fish at Peche (plenty for two relatively normal humans)
Late to the party, so most of the places I’d recommend have already been mentioned. Just have to add Killer Po Boys for an excellent Po Boy. Had a pork belly po boy last time that had a unique slaw on it that was slap yo mamma good.
For Breakfast, there is always Cafe du Monde—but go to the one on Jackson Square. It’s not really Breakfast, just Beignets and Cafe au lait. For a real Breakfast, Stanley on Jackson Square is quite good.
Finally, I think Commander’s Palace has lost a step, but for fine dining, GW Fins is outstanding. Excellent seafood.
Can get very crowded with long lines many days. Once we decided it wasn’t worth the wait and went over to the Cafe Beignet on Royal Street, just as good but a quieter, more relaxed experience.
Yeah, meant to add that you need to get there early to avoid the crowds—or rather to avoid a wait for a table. But I kinda enjoy the crowds, the street bands, and the whole experience.
Yeah, but is it memorialized on low-rent CPG chicory coffee that nobody I know has ever purchased?
Honestly, I do not get the Cafe du Monde hype. My wife was in a bridal party a while back and the group decided to brave the wait. An hour later, everyone is gushing about how good the beignets are and all I can think is “we’re all an hour hotter and hungrier…and black dress funnel cake is unsurprisingly tasty.”
I’ve not been to Cafe Beignet, but I imagine they fry dough and sprinkle powdered sugar as well as anyone.
