Totally agree. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Or something like that.
I am not a basketball person, but in every sport I have played or coached you plan and teach for when things go wrong, or how to play against better talent. I would like to believe that UVA basketball does the same. However, Iâm not sure they do and that is a little disappointing.
Did some memo go out to every sports fan in the last 3 years saying to post this on boards and social media when youâre unhappy with your team? I swear I see it everywhere when fans are pissed about their team these days.
Also, itâs not the definition of insanity.
I do think if there were a case where itâs applicable, itâs this one though LOL.
Think sports in general are facing an existential crisis with the old school âDo it my wayâ approach vs the young hot shot analytic nerds
Hah! Itâs just a saying, which is why the sentence âor something like thatâ came after it. It was kind of a joke, but whatever.
I didnât get the memo but maybe? I feel like this statement is repeated often which was kind of the point.
Hot take: Many young athletes arenât tough/good enough to cut it or get better under a âdo it my wayâ system or coach because theyâve grown up with someone (them/parent/coach) finding some odd ball +/- GR.4%% L#22<> stat(s) convincing them that they are good because the stats say so. No need to work any harder than I have or change anything because of their off the charts +/- GR.4%% L#22<>.
Yes, my major point (in different language) is that it would be nice to do something different when it doesnât go our way. Or at least try something different. I think we all agree on that and hope it doesnât bring out the comments about the way Iâm saying it.
I do think it is also an out of touchness from the coaching side. There are plenty of players who are still humble and want to work. But it gets disheartening when you work but are told you wont be able to play because of a certain requirement and then you see the Kody Stattmanns and Dantes of the world playing despite not meeting those requirements (turnovers, passiveness which is just basically more turnovers, etc. etc.).
But I do think your point stands as well.
As an NBA prospect, McNeely seems to be a shooting guard trapped in the body of a point guard. But this is a problem that almost every player his size has: once you get to college, unless you go to a small school that agrees to let you handle the ball for 4 years, youâre not going to be able to transform in to an NBA PG. He needs help getting his shot off. He could be a big scorer if we set some good picks for him. He looks very confident at the FT line, in any situation. But when he tries to get his shot off against a taller player, heâs not nearly as accurate. He actually shoots better if he backs up and shoots from NBA range with no defender close to him, then if he tries to take a taller defender one-on-one. Heâs not Jeff Lamp. Reminds me more of Dave Koesters from our 1976 ACC Championship team.
I watched last night with a bunch of non-UVA friends. Their general sentiment was âwhat happened to UVA? This doesnât look like a UVA teamâ and âletâs change the channelâ - basically mystified by our crappiness. I had no counter-argument.
Yes I agree with this 100 percent.
Donât disagree at all. Thatâs maddening for a fan. Canât imagine what itâs like for the player.
iMac is an all- ACC player next year. Heâs only a sophomore. But he becomes so much more valuable when we have a bonafide star next to him who can score. He is Steve Kerr in the NBA. Or Klay Thompson. Or John Paxton. Or JJ Redick in the NBA. Depending on your age you get to pick. He has an elite skill.
He is perfect for us, but teams face guard him and donât let him catch and shoot. Duke was all over him last night like a bad smell. Itâs the blue-print: donât let him catch it inside of 25 feet. Even when they switched last night, he was smothered like a pork chop, he has no room and canât get the ball in his spots. When he does, heâs deadly.
But when you trot out a bunch of guys who canât shoot, itâs easy to really really really focus on him. Give me another shooter or two and IMAC scores 4-6 more points per game. He needs another guy to take the pressure off him, because every defense is keying on him. Heâs a great player who needs help.
Also, I guarantee other ACC coaches are happy when we we donât play Elijah. Who would you rather have to defend or game plan for - Rodhe or Elijah? Dante or Elijah? Itâs a huge miss to not play X and I donât care about his stats because he is playing garbage minutes for the most part.
By the numbers, heâs the second or third best defender we have. There will be mistakes, and there will be turnovers, and there will be errors. But there will also be highlights, and great plays, and a defensive respect that doesnât exist right now when we are on offense.
Iâm done. Have a good Sunday. Iâm headed to the PGA Tour Event in Palm Beach Gardens (Now the Cognizant Classic, used to be the Honda Classic) to hang with my friends. Itâs pouring and they have been delayed. Hope everyone has a good Sunday afternoon. I smell hospitality tents.
Iâm not averse to a zone, but my casual impression watching the beginning of the 2H, before I mostly stopped paying close attention with about 10 minutes left, is that RD shut down Flip in the possessions he guarded him straight up (I.e., wasnât recovering from a hard hedge out beyond the 3 pt line). Now, Iâve never coached at any level, but big brain Haney predicted that RD might be able to shut down Flip based on big brain ideas like âI watched last yearâs game on my television.â
So thatâs my big brain idea for the staff: buy a TV, buy a VCR, ask some super techie kid how to program it. Heck, buy a notebook! When you have a guy who can shut down the other teamâs all-American, write that down, in the notebook! Then, later, open that notebook and read the note about how to shut down Flip. Donât forget a writing implement!
Great points, Chris! I agree with you. But with Virginia being called the most deliberate offensive team in college basketball, on TV broadcasts while recruits watch, can Tony Bennett recruit the other pieces to form a great team?
Groves also would have looked better this year if we had an inside scorer that defenses had to collapse back on. Itâs too bad that heâs just here for one season.
Given the portal and tampering these days ⌠seems to me we need more âACC ready nowâ pieces throughout our top 10 players ⌠canât assume that todayâs skill and experience gaps will get ironed out and weâll be the ones to gain from it ⌠Tony plans, Portal God laughs.
I have a couple non-Hoo buddies who regularly text me during games. Lately itâs just been a word or two, âsorryâ being the most frequent. Iâm actually amazed theyâve been paying attention.
The definition of insanity is unsoundness of mind sufficient to render a person unfit to maintain a contractual or other legal relationship or sufficient to warrant commitment to a mental health facility.
