UVA at NC State thread

this team is exhausting to cover, or watch for that matter

State was great offensively today period. They hit shots but they also absolutely carved up our ball screen D. Just abused us. I thought in the first half it was mostly them. The 2nd mostly UVA’s poor defense. They let their foot off the gas in the last 8-10 minutes, coulda rolled up more.

That’s the biggest difference. Having estaished vocal leaders sets the table for so much. Bennett teams (and I’d argue all great teams)at their best are player led. My experience also teaches Leadership is also the hardest skill to teach.

I asked a panel on a LRA podcadr before last season who was the team leader and got non-committal answers of Hauser and Kihei both proved to be wrong. I asked it again this year and heard Kihei and again it’s wrong or at least partially. Kihiwis a leader but a nonverbal one. He does what he’s supposed to and sers an example. I’m beginning to think Reece is the same.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year in it will be the first time since the 19/20 season that the Hoos have an old team and multiple players in a position to be a leader. Now if they turn out to be leaders that’s yet to be seen.

A team needs a mix of those vocal in
your face guys and the lead by example guys. This team only has 2 guys who can even be leaders Reece and Kihei and they arent the vocal types. The rest of the team is made up of first yrs transfers walkons and first time starters. Those guys. Arent gonna be leaders.

Time to admit that this team’s weak link is its defense?

Not having a good defense makes it really hard to play the way Tony wants to and still win games.

That was a 56 possession game.by my rough box score math. Crazy. 1.37 points per for State.

4th worst points per possession allowed in a game by a Bennett UVA defense

1 Washington in Maui
2 Gonzaga last year
3 Tennessee
4 today

We’ve set a lot of those bad records the past few years. Back to today, we are what 19 games in and I have no freakin clue what Tony is trying to accomplish game to game. It’s almost like it’s still non con and he’s hoping some line up or defensive cohesion will appear. As others have said he is reluctant to try any major offensive or defensive deviation.

It’s just absolutely maddening to watch the same monie over and over. I don’t care if the entire roster reruns, plus 5 recruits. There better be an infusion of swinging dicks or some of the returners before find it. We are well past the point as a program of waiting for guys to develop. That strategy of recruiting and coaching needs to change ASAP or we’ll be left behind with the direction cbb is going

Ever since we’ve changed jerseys we’ve sucked.

I think what frustrates me this year, regardless of how good or bad we are, is that we intentionally did not use 3 open scholarships because we wanted to keep everyone happy, yet we barely play our bench and might have a transfer or two anyways.

I do have to wonder how likely the first years are to transfer. The constant speculation is what I hate so much about the new transfer rule, because the immediate assumption is that if someone isn’t playing that they’re not happy and will hit the portal. But I bring this up because I do wonder what type of expectations Taine and Igor had coming in. For all we know they could’ve been told this was essentially a redshirt year for them. And I also wonder if international prospects might be less likely to transfer having not been brought up playing in the states and not being that know of a quantity from limited tape and scouting.

If transfer speculation is frowned upon please let me know. I’m not saying anyone will, just that the thought always crosses my mind with the new rule

True. And we need to add an orange jersey into the mix. Also, guaranteed Tony and staff won’t be rocking those grey/kind of light blue pullovers again…

I’m really not that worried about transfers this year. Could be wrong. There’s a lot of surprising ones nowadays. But like with last year we knew by now Jabri was pretty much gone, and once Casey’s role fell off he was a sure thing. McKoy was more 50/50 but we knew he was high risk.

I think with the climate today there’s no way around talking about the risk of players transferring. Would just prefer people not say things like hey I’ve heard player X is leaving. Rumors can become self fulfilling prophecies in the social media age.
