Top of the 8th, LHP Blake Barker takes over on the mound for the HOOS. Wilkerson to lead off for UNC.

  • Wilkerson draws a walk. One on and nobody down for Donofrio.
  • Donofrio on a full count walks. Barker struggling to find the zone. Two on and nobody down for Honeycutt.
  • Mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. RHP Jay Woolfolk takes over on the mound for the HOOS.
  • Honeycutt lays down a bunt in front of the mound. Woolfolk fields it and throws to 3rd, but the ball is offline and ends up in foul territory. Wilkerson scores, 10-6 UNC. 2nd and 3rd with nobody down for Cook.
  • Cook is intentionally walked. Bases loaded and nobody down for Harber.
  • Harber on a full count grounds a base hit into LCF past a diving GOF. Two runs score, 12-6 UNC. Runners on the corners and nobody down for Osuna.
  • Osuna K’s (1) swinging. Runners on the corners and one down for Stevenson.
  • Stevenson on a full count K’s (2) swinging. Harber stole 2nd on the pitch, 2nd and 3rd with two down for Van De Brake.
  • Van De Brake walks. Bases loaded and two down for Madera.
  • Madera on 3-1 flies out to Didawick in LF to mercifully end the frame.

Middle of the 8th, UNC now leads 12-6.

Bottom of the 8th, Poston still on the mound for UNC. Becker to lead off for the HOOS.

  • Becker draws a walk. One on and nobody down for GOF.
  • GOF lays a bunt down to 3rd for some reason. Van De Brake fields it and throws to 1st for the out, Becker moves up a base. Runner on 2nd and one down for Whalen.
  • Whalen K’s swinging. Runner on 2nd and two down for Saucke.
  • Saucke on the next pitch grounds a base hit up the middle. Becker scores, 12-7 UNC. One on and two down for Ford.
  • Ford on the next pitch hits a hard grounder to short, but Wilkerson fields it on one hop and throws to 2nd for the force out to end the inning.

Heading into the 9th, UNC now leads 12-7.

Nice thing about this team is we can be down 6 in the eighth and I can still convince myself we have a shot. Not likely, but…

It’s obviously not gonna be the reason we lost the game or anything, but bunting GOF in that situation even if it was for a hit and not a SAC was incredibly stupid. We’re down six runs man.

  • Donofrio K’s (2) swinging on three pitches. Two down for Honeycutt.
  • Honeycutt flies out to Whalen in deep CF on the warning track to end the frame.

Middle of the 9th, UNC leads 12-7. Gonna need another miracle.

Agree, he is capable of bunting for a hit but that is not the scenario to go for it.

  • Didawick flies out to Honeycutt in fairly deep LCF. One down for Ference.
  • Ference pops out to Madera at 2nd. Two down for Anderson.
  • Anderson hits a bloop shot into RF that finds grass. One on and two down for PH Antonio Perrotta.
  • Perrotta on a full count K’s swinging to end it.

UNC takes the series finale 12-7 to avoid the sweep and improve to 26-6 (11-4) on the season. UVA falls to 25-7 (9-6).

We’ll see you next Tuesday at 6PM for a midweek home game against VCU.

Well we accomplished our main goal this weekend by winning 2/3, beat a very good team on Thursday and Friday in the process. Got a bad start in this one from Jaxel and then our limited bullpen depth caught up to us in the later innings, will be interesting to see how our rotation shakes out next week as I could see one, maybe two changes being made. McKay seems to be definitely headed out and Jaxel could be as well after today’s performance.

Can’t be mad at our hitting when they put up 7 runs, that’s enough to win most games but unfortunately not enough with our pitching staff. Didawick’s K with the bases loaded in the 6th ended up being a death blow, in hindsight we needed to break the game open right there.

But hey shit happens, won the series and have some positive momentum moving into the rest of the schedule. Onto next week, GO HOOS.
