Currently 36 degrees and cloudy but dry, light intermittent breeze blowing in from left field, wind chill in the high-20’s.
Our matchup today is against Oregon State. Likely the toughest non-conference opponent we’ll face this season and arguably the biggest single non-conference regular season game we’ve played in a while.
Oregon State is off to a 4-0 start this season and currently ranked #7 in D1baseball’s top 25 poll. They’re coming off a 2024 season where they went 45-16 (19-10), finished 2nd in the Pac-12 (RIP) and were the #15 national seed in the NCAA tournament, eventually losing to Kentucky in the Super Regionals. Despite being without a conference for this season, this is a powerhouse program with a ton of talent and pedigree, having won three national titles in the last 20 years. Their starting lineup is deep, headlined by Washington transfer SS Aiva Arquette, who is expected to be a 1st round pick in this year’s MLB draft. In 2024 he hit .325 with 12 HR’s and 36 RBI’s, and has gotten off to a very hot start this season hitting .538 through four games. 3B Trent Carraway is another potential 1st rounder, an injury cut his freshman campaign short but he’s also gotten off to a good start this year hitting .471 with two doubles. LF Gavin Turley is the best returning power hitter for the Beavers, hitting 19 HR’s with 75 RBI’s in 2024. And 1B Jacob Krieg is a big bodied right handed hitter who has already smashed 3 HR’s this season. All in all there’s no real easy outs in this lineup, their guys are gonna battle at the plate and make our pitchers work for everything. Jay is gonna need to have his good stuff today.
Projected starter on the mound today for Oregon State is Sophomore LHP Ethan Kleinschmit. He’s a 6’3, 200 lbs. JUCO transfer from Linn-Benton Community College. At the JUCO level last season he went 6-1 with a 1.03 ERA in 13 appearances, all starts, and in 78.1 IP he gaves up 39 hits, 16 walks and had 120 K’s. He started the season by throwing 6 shutout innings of work against Indiana in a 6-0 win, striking out 5 and walking 2. From my research he’s got a fastball that sits in the low 90’s along with a slurve and changeup mix. Kleinschmit has generated quite a bit of buzz after his first start, and from his profile is the type of lefty we’ve struggled with in the past. So hopefully the bats come ready today. Oregon State also has a pretty deep bullpen featuring more than a few fireballers, so something to look out for in the later innings.
Looks like first pitch is now at 5:25 PM EST.
Also for anyone wondering, Oklahoma beat Minnesota 3-2 in the early game today.
Welp turns out I scouted the wrong SP for Oregon State. LHP Nelson Keljo is starting on the mound for them today.
He went 4 IP in their game against Xavier, allowing 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, and 5 K’s. 6’3, 228 lbs. Junior from Portland, Oregon has a low to mid 90’s fastball and a slider/changeup mix.
We’re about to get underway. Hoos are the home team today.
Top of the 1st, RHP Jay Woolfolk starts on the mound for the HOOS. 3B Trent Carraway leads off for Oregon State.
- Carraway K’s (1) looking. One down for SS Aiva Arquette.
- Arquette K’s (2) swinging on an outside cutter. Two down for LF Gavin Turley.
- Turley on a full count lines a base hit into RF after a good battle. One on and two down for CF Dallas Macias.
- Macias draws a walk. Two on and two down for 1B Jacob Krieg.
- Krieg on a full count K’s (3) looking to end the frame. Ump took FOREVER to ring him up but nice job by Jay to battle back. Lotta pitches for him that inning though.
Middle of the 1st, game is scoreless.
Bottom of the 1st, LHP Nelson Keljo starts on the mound for Oregon State. SS Eric Becker leads off for the HOOS.
- Becker on the first pitch flies out to Talt in RF. One down for 2B Henry Godbout.
- Godbout on a full count works a walk. One on and one down for 1B Chris Arroyo.
- OSU pitcher works at lightning speed.
- Arroyo flies out to Turley in LF. One on and two down for RF Henry Ford.
- Ford lines a base hit against the shift into RF. Two on and two down for C Jacob Ference.
- Ference K’s swinging at a ball in the dirt to end the inning.
Heading into the 2nd, game is scoreless.
Top of the 2nd, Woolfolk on the mound for the HOOS. C Wilson Weber leads off for Oregon State.
- Weber on a full count lines a base hit into LF. One on and nobody down for DH Tyce Peterson.
- Peterson K’s (4) swinging. One on and one down for RF Easton Talt.
- Talt on a full count rips a base hit into RF off the glove of Arroyo. Weber stops at 2nd, two on and one down for 2B AJ Singer. Jay struggling to locate.
- Mound visit for UVA, DD out for a chat. Jay is already at 44 pitches.
- Singer on a full count works a walk. Bases loaded, one down for Carraway. Trouble.
- Carraway on first pitch fouls out to Arroyo near the OSU dugout. Big out but not out of it yet. Bases loaded and two down for Arquette.
- Arquette K’s (5) looking to end the threat and the frame. HUGE by Jay to get out of that jam but he’s already at 59 pitches, so not long for this game.
Middle of the 2nd, game is scoreless.
Bottom of the 2nd, Keljo on the mound for Oregon State. CF Aidan Teel leads off for the HOOS.
- Teel on first pitch pops out to Krieg in foul territory near home plate. One down for DH Harrison Didawick.
- Didawick flies out to Talt in RCF. Two down for 3B Luke Hanson.
- Hanson on a full count grounds out to Carraway down the 3B line to end the inning.
Heading into the 2nd, game is scoreless.
Top of the 3rd, Woolfolk on the mound for the HOOS. Turley leads off for Oregon State.
- Turley on the first pitch lines a base hit into RF. One on and nobody down for Macias.
- Ugh. Macias hits a bouncer up the middle on a hit and run. Godbout was in position to make the play but instead it hits off Jay’s glove and ricochets past Godbout into shallow RF. Turley moves up to 3rd on the play, runners on the corners and nobody down for Krieg.
- Krieg on a full count K’s (6) looking. Runners on the corners and one down for Weber.
- Macias is thrown out trying to steal 2nd. Runner on 3rd and two down now for Weber, 2-1 count.
- Weber grounds out to Godbout at 2nd to end the frame. Jay plays with fire again but does not get burnt, now at 76 pitches.
Middle of the 3rd, game is scoreless.
Bottom of the 3rd, Keljo on the mound for Oregon State. LF James Nunnallee leads off for the HOOS.
- Nunnallee on a full count works a walk after being behind 0-2. One on and nobody down for Becker.
- Becker on 0-2 is plunked on the right elbow. Two on and nobody down for Godbout.
- Godbout on the next pitch lays a fantastic bunt down the 3rd base line. Keljo does a really nice job fielding his position and with a bare hand throws to 1st for the out. Both runners move up, 2nd and 3rd and one down for Arroyo.
- Mound visit for OSU, catcher wants a chat. 2-2 count for Arroyo.
- Arroyo on a full count sneaks a base hit past Arquette at short and into RCF. Nunnallee and Becker both score, 2-0 HOOS. One on and one down for Ford.
- Ford on the next pitch fouls out to Talt down the RF line. Didn’t really get a view of the catch. One on and two down for Ference.
- Ference draws a walk. Two on and two down for Teel.
- Teel hits a grounder down the 1st base line. Krieg bobbles it at first but is then able to throw to a covering Keljo at the bag just in time for the out to end the inning.
Heading into the 4th, HOOS now lead 2-0.
Top of the 4th, Woolfolk still on the mound for the HOOS. Peterson leads off for Oregon State.
- Peterson on a full count grounds one into the hole to Becker at short. He tries to make the throw on the move but no chance to get Peterson, infield single. One on and nobody down for Talt.
- Talt on the next pitch hits a bunt to the right side of the infield. Arroyo ranges over to cover and throws to Jay at 1st, but he can’t get his foot on the bag. Runner is safe, two on and nobody down for Singer.
- Mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. RHP Joe Colucci enters the game for the HOOS.
- Singer walks on four pitches despite giving himself up to bunt. Awful. Bases loaded and nobody down for Carraway.
- Carraway K’s (1) swinging on high heat. Bases loaded and one down for Arquette.
- Arquette on a full count walks to drive in a run. 2-1 HOOS. Bases loaded and one down for Turley.
- Mound visit for UVA, Ference out for a chat. We’ve given up 4 BB’s in 3.1 IP, do have 7 K’s as well but can’t give up free passes like this.
- Turley K’s (2) swinging on a nice breaking pitch. Bases loaded and two down for Macias.
- Run scores as a high fastball gets away from Ference. He’s gotta catch that one. 2-2 game tied, 2nd and 3rd two down now for Macias, 0-2 count.
- Macias chops one to Arroyo who waits for the high bounce before tossing over to Colucci for the out to end the frame.
Middle of the 4th, game is now tied. Could’ve been worse, but we also gave up a free run on a passed ball that should’ve been caught.
Wonder how long Woolfolk stays in the rotation if he can’t get to the fifth in his starts.
His command has been wobbly to start the season. Again.
Might be a warm weather pitcher. For some athletes ( yours truly included), warm weather is a real difference maker.
Bottom of the 4th, Keljo on the mound for Oregon State. Didawick leads off for the HOOS.
- Didawick flies out to Arquette down the LF line. One down for Hanson.
- Hanson K’s looking on a breaking ball that was off the plate. Two down for Nunnallee.
- Nunnallee on a full count works a walk. Keljo the OSU pitcher is throwing a fit at the strike zone. One on and two down for Becker.
- Becker K’s swinging to end the inning.
Heading into the 5th, game is tied at 2.
Top of the 5th, Colucci still on the mound for the HOOS. Krieg leads off for Oregon State.
- Krieg hits a hard grounder back up the middle. Becker makes a great play on the dive to glove it, but he has to double pump the throw and that allows Krieg to beat him out by a half step at 1st. One on and nobody down for Weber.
- Weber K’s (3) swinging. One on and one down for Peterson.
- Peterson on a full count grounds a base hit in between short and 3rd. Two on and one down for Talt.
- Mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. LHP Blake Barker comes into the game for the HOOS.
- Wild pitch moves both runners up a base. 2nd and 3rd, one down now for Talt, 2-0 count.
- Talt draws a walk. Bases loaded, one down for Singer. Here we go again.
- Singer lines a base hit past Arroyo into RF. Two runs score, 4-2 Oregon State now leads. Runners on the corners, one down for Carraway.
- Carraway with a swinging bunt on the left side of the infield. Ference vacates home for some reason which means Barker has to throw to 1st, and his throw is offline. Everyone is safe, run scores, 5-2 Oregon State. Two on and one down for Arquette.
- Mound visit for UVA, DD out for a chat. Barker stays in, much to my chagrin.
- Arquette on a full count rips a liner to the right side of the infield, but Godbout is somehow able to catch it on the fly moving to his right for the out. Two on and two down for Turley.
- Turley K’s (1) swinging to mercifully end the inning.
Middle of the 5th, Oregon State now leads 5-2. Guys needs to wake the fuck up.
Wasn’t it warm in Puerto Rico?
