Single digit losses for this squad looking wildly optimistic

Bottom of the 5th, RHP Eric Segura takes over on the mound for Oregon State. Godbout leads off for the HOOS.

  • Godbout on a full count hits a liner back up the middle that hits off Segura’s glove. He hustles to field it but the throw to 1st is offline, Godbout is safe. One on and nobody down for Arroyo.
  • Next pitch reaches the wall behind home plate, Godbout moves up a base. Runner on 2nd and nobody down now for Arroyo, 1-0 count.
  • Arroyo walks on four pitches. Two on and nobody down for Ford.
  • Ford hits a one hopper to Singer at 2B. He makes the toss over to 2nd for the force out but Ford is called safe at 1st on the relay. There will be a review.
  • Live I thought Ford was clearly safe. On replay I think he’s clearly safe. Also on replay the SS didn’t touch 2nd base, but that’s not reviewed.
  • Call stands. Runners on the corners and one down for Ference.
  • Ference K’s swinging. Goddammit man. Runners on the corners and two down for Teel.
  • Oregon State fans are incredibly annoying. Whining about pitches a foot out of the zone not getting called strikes.
  • Teel on a full count K’s swinging to end the inning.

Heading into the 6th, Oregon State leads 5-2. The lack of clutch hitting is getting very old, even this early in the season.

Ford is really struggling with runners in scoring position so far this year.

And so is Ference.

Top of the 6th, Barker still on the mound for the HOOS. Macias leads off for Oregon State.

  • Macias grounds one back to Barker on the mound who tosses over to 1st for the out. One down for Krieg.
  • Mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. RHP Wes Arrington takes over on the mound for the HOOS. This is his first appearance for us, transfer from DIII Lynchburg College.
  • Krieg K’s (1) swinging on a check swing. Two down for Weber.
  • Weber grounds out to Godbout to end the frame. A clean inning!

Middle of the 6th, Oregon State leads 5-2.

Is that the middle of our order with no one on and bases juiced?

Bottom of the 6th, Segura still on the mound for Oregon State. Didawick leads off for the HOOS.

  • Didawick on a full count K’s swinging. One down for Hanson.
  • Hanson K’s swinging in an uncompetitive AB. Two down for Nunnallee.
  • Nunnallee on a full count K’s swinging to end the inning. Five straight K’s for Segura.

Heading into the 7th, Oregon State leads 5-2. Idk man.

Top of the 7th, Arrington still on the mound for the HOOS. Peterson leads off for Oregon State.

  • Peterson on a full count lines out loudly to Nunnallee in the LCF gap. One down for Talt.
  • Talt on a full count works a walk. One on and one down for Singer.
  • Talt steals 2nd, good ball to go on as it was a breaking pitch in the dirt. Runner on 2nd and one down now for Singer, full count.
  • Singer on a full count K’s (2) looking. Runner on 2nd and two down for Caraway.
  • Caraway K’s (3) swinging on three pitches to end the frame.

7th inning stretch time, Oregon State leads 5-2. Gotta get the bats going.

Bottom of the 7th, Segura still on the mound for Oregon State. Becker leads off for the HOOS.

  • Becker shoots a base hit up the middle through the shift. One on and nobody down for Godbout.
  • Godbout flies out to Macias in CF. One on and one down for Arroyo.
  • Arroyo grounds a base hit into RF. Becker is able to move up to 3rd, runners on the corners and one down for Ford.
  • Ford K’s looking on a breaking ball right down the middle. Awful AB. Runners on the corners and two down for Ference.
  • Ference on a full count K’s swinging to end the inning. He struck out twice that AB, the 1-2 pitch was a strike too but didn’t get called.

Heading into the 8th, Oregon State leads 5-2.

Top of the 8th, Arrington still on the mound for the HOOS. Arquette leads off for Oregon State.

  • Arquette on the first pitch ropes a leadoff double over Teel’s head in CF that bounces off the wall. Runner on 2nd and nobody down for Turley.
  • Turley on a full count walks. Two on and nobody down for Macias. Might be time to get Arrington out of there.
  • Right on cue, mound visit for UVA. BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. LHP Dean Kampschror enters the game for the HOOS.
  • Macias on a full count works a walk. Bases loaded and nobody down for Krieg.
  • Krieg lines a base hit into RF. One run scores, 6-2 Oregon State. Bases still loaded, nobody down for Weber. Game is getting away from us.
  • Mound visit for UVA, Ference wants a chat as Kampschror falls behind 2-0. Not sure why he’s staying in the game here against OSU’s righties, he’s basically just a lefty specialist.
  • Weber flies out to Teel in CF. Turley scores from 3rd, 7-2 Oregon State. Two on and two down now for Peterson.
  • Another mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Another pitching change incoming. RHP Charlie Oschell enters the game for the HOOS.
  • Peterson K’s (1) swinging on three pitches. Two on and two down for Talt.
  • Talt K’s (2) swinging on high heat to end the frame. Nice little outing there from Oschell.

Middle of the 8th, Oregon State now leads 7-2. Got six outs to get our collective heads out of our asses.

Some fun offensive stats to start the season. And I mean that in a few different ways.

Didawick is 2-14.

Ference is 3-11 (and no RBI). And seven of his eight outs are Ks.

Hanson is 1-15, and has 8 Ks.

It’s time to see what Buchanan and Harris can do. Shake some shit up, Oak.

Out of those 3 I think Hanson is gonna have the shortest leash. Wouldn’t mind seeing what Harris looks like, even if it’s just to give Hanson a day or two off. Will say that coming into the season I didn’t have much expectation for Harris, he was still very much a WIP in the fall both in the box and defensively at 3rd but I mean why not at least see what he can do.

I’d be surprised if Didawick gets pulled this early, but he does need to get off the schneid at some point. Still having the same issue of chasing middle outside fastballs and breaking pitches.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Ference and maybe Ford moved down in the lineup for a little bit, bring Nunnallee up into the leadoff spot and have Becker hit 3rd, with Arroyo hitting 4th. More as a sign for them to get their shit together and stop having bad AB’s with RISP.

Bottom of the 8th, Segura still on the mound for Oregon State. Teel leads off for the HOOS.

  • Teel draws a leadoff walk. One on and nobody down for Didawick.
  • Didawick K’s swinging. One on and one down for PH Jackson Sirois.
  • Mound visit for Oregon State. Pitching change incoming (thankfully). RHP Matthew Morrell takes over on the mound for the Beavers.
  • Sirois on the first pitch hits a slow grounder in front of the mound. Morrell fields it cleanly and throws over to 1st for the out. Teel moves up a base, runner on 2nd and two down for Nunnallee.
  • Nunnallee on the next pitch grounds out to Arquette at short to end the inning. So much for seeing this guy throw some pitches first.

Heading into the 9th, Oregon State leads 7-2.

Top of the 9th, Oschell still on the mound for the HOOS. Sirois takes over at 3rd. Singer leads off for Oregon State.

  • Singer lines out to Nunnallee in LF. One down for Caraway.
  • Caraway K’s (3) swinging on a nice breaking ball. Two down for Arquette.
  • Arquette flies out to Nunnallee in LF to end the frame. Liked what I saw from Oschell.

Middle of the 9th, Oregon State leads 7-2. Three outs left, if we’re gonna do something it’s gotta be now.

Bottom of the 9th, Morrell still on the mound for Oregon State. Becker leads off for the HOOS.

  • Becker on a full count flies out to Macias in CF. One down for Godbout.
  • Godbout grounds one up the middle against the shift. Singer is able to snag it but can’t get the ball out of the glove cleanly and his throw is late. Godbout reaches, one on and one down for Arroyo.
  • Arroyo lines out to Arquette at short, who then doubles up Godbout with his throw to 1st to end the game. Godbout didn’t even slide going back to the bag. Fitting way to close this one out.

#7 Oregon State wins 7-2 to improve to 5-0 on the season. #2 Hoos fall to 2-2.

We’ll see you tomorrow 1PM EST as we try and bounce back against Minnesota.
