Richmond will be no slouch in the midweek. They’re 18-2 so far this season with wins already over NCST and Boston College, and statistically have one of the top offenses in the country. Currently riding an 11 game win streak.
Top of the 2nd, Hodges on the mound for the HOOS. LF DJ Pacheco leads off for Richmond.
Pacheco lines a base hit into LF. One on and nobody down for 2B Michael Elko.
Pacheco gets picked off 1st and thrown out at 2nd. Nobody on and one down now for Elko, full count.
Elko on the next pitch draws a walk. One on and one down for SS Connor Larson.
Pickoff throw from Hodges ends up in foul ground. Elko moves up a base, runner on 2nd and one down now for Larson, 2-1 count.
Larson on a full count also walks. Lots of pitches missing high for Hodges. Two on and one down for C Cole Palmeri.
Mound visit for UVA, DD out for a chat. Alex Markus getting warm in the pen.
Palmeri K’s (3) looking. Two on and two down for RF Trevor Dosenbach.
Dosenbach on the next pitch rips a double into the LF corner. Both runners score, 2-0 Richmond. Runner on 2nd and two down for Whitley.
Another mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. RHP Alex Markus takes over on the mound for the HOOS.
Whitley walks. Two on and two down for Jaffe.
Wild pitch moves both runners up a base. 2nd and 3rd, two down now for Jaffe, 2-2 count.
Jaffe hits a fly ball into the LCF gap. Didawick lays out to try and grab it but can’t come up with the ball. Both runners score, 4-0 Richmond as Jaffe ends up with a double. Runner on 2nd and two down for Arcamone.
That should have been Teel’s ball, not sure if he got called off by Didawick or just stopped running.
Arcamone walks on four pitches. Two on and two down for O’Brien.
Another mound visit for UVA, BOC out for a chat. Pitching change incoming. RHP Wes Arrington takes over on the mound for the HOOS.
O’Brien hits a grounder to Godbout at 2nd who tosses over to Becker for the force out. That mercifully ends the frame.
Middle of the 2nd, Richmond now leads 4-0. All four runs scored with two outs.
Top of the 3rd, Arrington still on the mound for the HOOS. Pacheco leads off for Richmond.
Pacheco hits a high bouncer to the left side of the infield. It goes over the glove of Hanson and past the glove of Becker into LF for a base hit. One on and nobody down for Elko.
Elko hits a chopper to Godbout. He throws over to Becker at 2nd for the force out but the relay throw to 1st is not in time. One on and one down for Larson.
Larson lines a double into the RCF gap. Teel went into a dive to try and come up with it but it hit off his glove. Elko holds at 3rd, 2nd and 3rd with one down now for Palmeri.
Mound visit for UVA, DD out for a chat.
Palmeri on the next pitch grounds out to Becker at short. Elko scores from 3rd, 5-0 Richmond. Runner on 2nd and two down now for Dosenbach.
Dosenbach lines out to Becker at short to end the frame.
Middle of the 3rd, Richmond now leads 5-0. Still early but we’ve dug ourselves quite the hole.
All those middle infield recruits who got away (in the draft) over the past few years certainly have had an impact.
Starting all three of Godbout, Becker, and Hanson is very unhelpful to a defense that is sporting its worst fielding percentage since 2015. (Hanson at .880 and Becker at .912 — yikes.)
Bonemer was an expected loss for a couple years, so wasn’t too surprising. Dickerson was the big one though, he was a summer blow up and probably would have started day one at SS.
Bottom of the 3rd, Peacock on the mound for Richmond. C Jacob Ference leads off for the HOOS.
Ference grounds a base hit up the middle past the SS Larson. One on and nobody down for LF Harrison Didawick.
Didawick pops out to Elko at 2nd. One on and one down for 3B Luke Hanson.
Hanson K’s looking at a breaking pitch at his eyes. Hanson and the ump both thought there was only two strikes, but everyone else knew that was strike three. One on and two down for Becker.
Becker pops out to Larson on the middle of the infield to end the inning.
I really don’t understand why Chone James isn’t starting this game. I get his defense at 2nd in our last game against Cal was very shaky but we could really use his bat in our lineup. Just have him DH if that’s the issue.
Also don’t get why we moved Teel out of the leadoff spot.
