I dont blame anyone but our post entry pass to pass cleanly completed ration is not good

Which is a key point. My younger daughter (who is not tall) made kind of a lame joke about someone being short. I said, “Hey, we don’t do that in this family.” She said, “Why? Because you’re short?” I said, “No. And I’m disappointed in you. We don’t make fun of short people unless the joke is FUNNY and that joke was terrible.”

In my view, the biggest impediment to the development of Shedrick’s post game is his hand strength. How many times have we seen him unable to catch a pass when he’s in the low post, or retain it when he does catch it? (FWIW, I thought this was Caffaro’s biggest weakness, too.) I’m not sure I know what sort of post game Shedrick possesses because I don’t recall him handling the ball in the low post unless it was a lob pass. Or course, this may just be me and my selective memory.

Is this a backward joke aimed at Haney?

Yes.

AND you always want to be rooting for whatever gives the best material for jokes.

Shedrick’s lack of post game is that he simply doesn’t have any moves.

He bobbles the ball sometimes but, mostly, he catches just fine off of PnR, lobs, presenting himself in traffic. When someone else creates the advantage for him, he converts at a high clip.

His offensive game is limited to a jump shot (which is better than he was allowed to utilize it this year, but I think he needs confidence/a green light to be effective and don’t think he had that), and then he does this really slow developing multiple dribble hook shot that he rarely utilizes for good reason.

If he could just develop a little up and under, quicker hook shot/just take a dribble and some strides across the lane, it’d be a whole new world. Not even anything crazy like a (gasp) drop step (but one can dream). I do think (assuming he’s here) he should shoot his jumper more next year, though. That’d open some things up and I think he’d hit at a decent clip with some reps.

I mean not blaming Kihei individually but our guards have been horrible at feeding the post the last 4 years. Get Jay or Kadin isolated on a 5’11 guy and don’t even look at him. It’s certainly part of the problem

Jay could not get post position. He was way too weak on the block. He got bullied by smaller and stronger dudes all of the time. It was maddening to watch. He got the ball a bunch 8-10 feet out and was fairly effective there. Kihei also had a great connection with Jay in PnR and some sets.

If you want this, you want to get guys like Darion Atkins and Anthony Gill.

Yes that was also an even bigger part of the problem. But this isn’t an either or situation. Our guards have been terrible at passing into the post since Ty left. We’ve sucked at all aspects of post offense. One possible exception being Jayden’s mid range jumper

Yeah, it’s the PG’s responsibility to get passes to teammates where they can be effective. Reece and Kihei have no problem hitting Shedrick with a pocket pass or lob for a dunk. But they’re not gonna throw passes down into the post when they know the player can’t reliably do anything with it. Shedrick’s not a bad passer out of the post, but it’s surprising to me that he hasn’t developed any post moves in 4 years. I think he can still add value to our roster, but I’ve given up on thinking that he can be any kind of post-up player.

Here to fix our 3 point shooting percentage.

This is very true. And that’s definitely on him to a big degree - that’s the kind of stuff you often develop in the off season. But it’s also got to be partially on staff - like what does our big man training regimen look like exactly? How has a starting center not developed a single reliable post move other than to launch himself at defenders recklessly over the course of four years?

Also think it’s funny that people are assigning responsibility for a lack of post ups without really mentioning the offense we run. Kadin spends half his time on the perimeter setting screens. When have we been building in all of these post up plays? Only have six post ups all year definitely says something about the players, but it also seems to me to scream that that’s not something our coaches are emphasizing in what we’re running at all. (But I defer to people who can actually analyze offensive sets on this point)

Yeah, I agree it’s a weakness of the coaching staff. Not necessarily the system because the system can and does generate post looks out of the Inside Triangle and we’d go to it pretty regularly whenever Gardner had a mismatch. Hauser used to get these looks designed for him as well and we’ve had Gill over the years, etc.

But it doesn’t seem like we’re good at teaching these skills to post guys. Most of our frontcourt players who thrive in these areas already have these skills when they get here. There are exceptions like Diakite, but his game ended up being more face up/perimeter based his senior year anyway.

It is hard to think of many players who developed a significant back to the basket game they didn’t already have after arriving here.

Am I misremembering but didn’t we run a variation of our offense where the screener was getting the ball vs Ohio in the NCAAT? It led to a bunch of Hauser and Murphy 12-15 footers?

I should probably clarify that I don’t think it’s all that big of a deal, though. Certainly it’d be nice to have in terms of fully developing players and, as a program, having a bunch of bigs who can create more of their own offense - but the sales pitch is still “We’ll improve your ability to play team defense, defend and run a pick and roll, improve your strength/toughness, and improve your shot.” And all of those things translate to the modern/NBA game much more than becoming a back to the basket player.

We ran both Sides and Triangle in that game. They switched a lot on us and sent heavy help all game off of Reece and Kihei to double our forwards and force them to just shoot over defenders a lot rather than being able to make better moves toward the rim.

The key takeaway- Shoot with *heavy, 3lb balls because you have to be balanced, good shot mechanics and it will get the players stronger. @DFresh11 get this info over to JWilly!

I like the idea if catching and making moves with the heavy balls. But when one comes hard off the rim and into Kadins mouth magnet no bueno
