UVA Basketball 2022-2023 Post Mortem Thread/Transfer out thread

We do have Buchanan.

I feel like Kadin legit has no clue what he is doing. Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but it really feels like a “grass is greener on the other side” type of situation. He wanted out of Virginia and was convinced that it was better elsewhere. And now, he’s casting lines everywhere attempting to make reality meet expectation.

I haven’t measured him myself, but most of the stories I’ve seen list him as 6-9, too.

BB is 6-10

I wonder if there is any hesitation among other coaches when a potential transfer’s parent takes to the internet to pick a fight with Tony Bennett.

I am sure there will be when they ask Tony about the full picture (without betraying confidences).

I’m sure it plays in. Imagine every coach has a risk/reward ratio they look at when bringing in a transfer on a 1 yr rental. I think Kadin’s may skew a bit closer to negative than positive when it comes to that ratio.

Maybe they get advice from Cory Kispert lol

Counter point, in 2016 we started a lineup with our tallest guy being 6’7. We had Tobey on the bench at 7 foot, now we have Buchanan at 6’10 while also likely trying to get another big or Stevenson(who is 6’10). I’m not worried about the height. I get what you mean for sure, but think sometimes we forget that we’ve had smaller lineup and teams in the past that have been excellent on both ends still.

Gill started every game and Wilkins started 21 times - both were listed at 6-8 and Gill at least was all of 6-8.
Some people confuse small ball with tiny ball.
Small ball means big guards and wings across the board for it to work right

What is called when you have one starter over 6’4”?

I was reading this Hollinger article on the Athletic (paywall, but I can share 5 guest passes if anyone wants to read and otherwise can’t). Hollinger talks about the correlation of offensive rebounds and turnover advantage to winning percentage in the NBA and points out that historically, teams that are better offensive rebounders and turnover differential (collectively favorable possession teams) are worse than teams that don’t get offensive rebounds. Reason for that is to get an offensive rebound, you first have to miss and teams that miss less (favorable efficiency teams) are more likely to win over favorable possession teams.

One comment by a Matt M. stood out to me though, “the advanced analytics models seem to suggest the opposite is true in college. If there’s anything I’ve taken away from your colleagues’ Bracket Breakers model, it’s that teams that maximize possession advantage, in particular via dominating the offensive glass but to a lesser extent to causing turnovers, tend to out-perform their overall rating in the postseason where teams that win on the basis of eFG discrepancies tend to under-perform their overall rating. This effect seems to be very durable over decades, and continues to be apparent even in small samples (UCONN was the best rebounding team in the country while eFG giants Arizona and Marquette were upset early).”

Made me think about Coach Bennett’s aversion to offensive rebounding, preferring to set up the defense and prevent opposing transition opportunities and whether that, rather than our pace of play, is more responsible our unfortunate pattern of early tournament upsets.

If Gill is 6’8 then Darius Thompson is the tallest 6’4 in history. Dudes hung out around the Pav all of the time and AG was barely taller than DT
