I think he’ll end up better than Kihei from the perimeter purely because of his size advantage. Kihei struggled with his slow release because it was easy to block, Bliss at 6’4 with a good step back move shouldn’t really have that problem. I do think he’s more suited to shoot off the dribble instead of coming off a blocker screen like we’d probably want, but that can always be developed.
Worse…Glendale
Advanced stats through 1/5 of the regular season:
- Dunn and Beekman are really good despite bad 3pt shooting this far
- Dunn, Beekman, Bond puts a TON of pressure on the rim. Bond just needs to play more in general
- Mckneely and Groves need to shoot more. I’d prefer 5+ 3pt attempts per game for both
- Rohde, Harris, Minor =

If there ever was a team to take Dick Bennett’s advice and switch to a pressure defense, this is the one
We are definitely pressuring a bit more, extending stuff, etc, but never really pressing.
Kind of annoyed me that we got down 15+ in the 2H to Wisc. And the plan for the end of the game was basically just lose, rather than try to win
Sincere question..
Is the first guy to catch a pass in the half court offense allowed to even look at the rim?
I’m thankful for Virginia basketball and LRA.
We’ll have some ups and downs this year, but I really do love this team
I wonder how that changes when looking only at p6 competition
To be fair he didn’t play much vs Florida and Wisconsin. Didn’t look confident and we didn’t run much for him. Hit his one shot vs Florida and his one shot vs wisconsin went in and out.
Looked much more comfortable playing the three vs WVU and having offense ran for him/instilling that confidence in him. That could be a huge development.
Rohde in particular always dribbles backward. Total non threat but I guess he is waiting for something to develop???
Agree Rohde seems to be deferring, looking to pass first.
I agree I definitely get vibes that Rohde is adjusting to hus new role and sometimes that may cause him to be more passive.
Well considering Beekman is -27 and Bond -18 in our three P6 games, probably not likely as good.
Parking brake is on a little, for sure. On the other side of the ball, his defense has really exceeded my expectations. I thought they might have to hide him a little on the least threatening perimeter player, but they have been able to keep Reece on the opponent running the most ball screens because Rohde has held up reasonably well.
I like Rohde’s defense and passing
Great way to put it.
I also agree about his D. I was expecting firet yr KG level bad. But Rohde is solid on D. And that makes me leas concerned about him being a bit hesitant on the other end.
Scorers gonna score so that will be there when he calls on it.
Low key - Rohdes effort on D is holding him back on O. I think he needs to get fewer minutes so he has more energy when he is on the floor.
Rohde is 11th on the team in usage rate - only ahead of Taine. Take your foot off the brake dude!!! You CAN do it!!
p.s. He’s averaging 32 minutes per game bs Power 5 teams. I think he needs to be in the range of 22-25 for a while… especially since that would get Bond on the floor more … and yes maybe a bit of the toughness of Taine getting to the rack.
I wasn’t really concerned about his D. Almost like length matters in basketball. He’s the tallest 3 man we’ve started at UVA since …2021 - and outside of the one year of Murphy… the 2nd tallest starting 3 under CTB. One year of 6-8 Key starting at the 3 was our best defense in UVA history.
This is a great take. He’s a good player and he will show it. But he clearly looks gassed and I don’t blame him. It’s a huge adjustment playing our way and against P5 competition consistently.
He’ll have two more Mike Curtis offseason which will pay dividends. Glad we have him for three years
