This bothered me way too much. Why are we so soft :sob:

That pansy music isn’t a reason UVA will never have a good football team again, but it’s another symptom of the reason(s) they won’t.

I feel for UVA football fans that want to be anything other than mediocre because it’s never gonna happen again. And if mediocre is the goal, why bother?

That pansy music is a real turn off. They should be playing Who Let The Dogs Out or something similar

Because football is a major portion of the revenue that allows us to enjoy all the other excellent sports programs the university offers?

Idk I mean I don’t expect uva to compete for a CFP spot or anything like that, but bowl every year some 8-9 win seasons shouldn’t be crazy. I’m more of a basketball guy, like most here, but I’m still a fan of the football program and at the absolute very least would like to have a reason for those around me to care about how they’re doing until basketball begins.

Also to put it lightly we saw some real head scratching stuff out of the last coach, who was arguably the most successful coach we’ve had in 20+ years. Winning is possible here but even if it’s only semi-relevancy that is achieved it will provide the funds needed for everything else we enjoy.

I mean why bother getting invested, not why bother fielding a team. UVA doesn’t have the fan base, city or administration to field a good football team anymore. Good football teams fans don’t bail during a rain delay on UVA strong day. That shitty music a few posts above sucks for football, but it’s spot on for UVA in a lot of ways. If being a game above .500 and getting invited to the Billings Tube Sock bowl in east bum fuck Arkansas gets you excited, have at it. You like impractical jokers so maybe shitty to mediocre is your thing.

I don’t know or care one iota about the finances. I do know that uva football has sucked for a long, long time, and just about every sport but football has been doing just fine. National championships left and right across several sports, all while football has been terrible.

We were in the orange bowl 5 years ago. You build the program the rest will come. Powerhouse football programs didn’t emerge instantaneously out of the Big Bang or whathaveyou

More a reflection on how bad the coastal was that year than the overall health of our football program.

That’s true. In the late Welsh days, Georgia played UVa three times in bowl games (2 x Peach + Oahu) that current Georgia fans would find the equivalent of the Tube Sock Bowl, because Georgia now makes the playoffs every year.

Things change, but you certainly have to have the right coaches, the right facilities, the right money — and the appetite to bend the rules, as needed.

The latter is where UVa always falls short, even when our best players were driving loaners from booster car dealers.

But that’s just the health of the ACC in general. And we have a mobile QB right now to build around.

Its like saying “Why care about UVA basketball?” following the Leito era. We have the facilities now. If we can show a spark or a glimpse season in the future that can be immediately built on with fan support and money. Why can’t we be like Northwestern for example

Tony Elliott can go 4-8 this year and some people on this board will still say he was a better hire than Bronco.

(Sorry getting caught up and missed my shot yesterday so firing it today)

I get why people would be out on the football program. But I don’t get the need to continually reiterate it and come back. If I don’t like something I don’t watch it. It’s pretty simple.

I am not in the camp of “all is lost and stop investing” I just don’t think we can point to any place in the last twenty years where our football program was healthy. That Orange bowl was an aberration just like the Gator bowl in '08. They were high water marks in a program that was suffering from several challenges.

I am optimistic about our future with football but also realistic that Virginia will never do the things necessary to be a consistent top 15 type of program. I do think that we can be competitive and have a program that is consistently in the top 30/35 in the country with occasional flashes of greatness like in the 90’s

Outside of a few programs, winning = fandom. Sustained winning = fan loyalty.

If you look back the past 20ish years, starting with the 2005 season, UVA football has only had back-to-back winning seasons once (!) … ONCE! That was 2018 and 2019 seasons with Bronco. London never had back-to-back winning seasons, Groh put together 4 straight winning seasons in the early 00s. And Welsh (god bless him) had 13 straight winning seasons from '87 to '99. 13!

Look. I wish UVA football fandom was more pronounced and robust … but it’s a reflection of poor performance the past 2 DECADES. IMO, we should all just enjoy the ride and let the fandom grow if the performance improves on the field.

At least the Gator Bowl was at the tail end of a good stretch of football (2002-05 — 2006 a down year with the QB carousel). There was serious talent on that Gator Bowl squad — notably Albert, Sintim, Fitzgerald, Lyles, Dowling, Cook, Peerman, Long, etc. — but following that season, Fitzgerald was booted, Sewell was ineligible, and Pete’s dragon was puff, apparently, and everything went to shit.

Edit: Somehow I missed big Eugene Monroe. Monroe and Albert together were special — damn, I miss talented O-lines!

Me? Not even 5 posts out if 400+? I’d guess the ratio is similar in other non gameday football threads. I guess you weren’t posting much in the Bronco era huh?

I was throwing out a comment in general I don’t count peoples post or keep receipts. Think of your post as the inspiration not the cause.

I posted tons during the Bronco era. Because while I disliked Bronco as a coach I’ve never not loved Virginia Football. It’s why I was a season ticket holder for close to 20 years knowing that I could only make it to 2 or 3 games a year. The coaches will come and go, the win totals will rise and fall. But I’m in this for life.

Also may want to charge your phone.

I don’t think you understand what’s great about the sport if you’re going to be miserable going to a mediocre bowl game every year. It’s not a sport that should be enjoyed as national championship or bust for 99% of schools.

There is definitely potential with our program, but we’ve never taken it seriously as an institution. I don’t blame fans one bit for being checked out, and I think it’s insanely offensive to direct any ire at the people that still care even a little bit after the complete lack of interest our university has shown the team from an administrative standpoint. I’m skeptical we are now, but there are some positive signs (basically everything recently other than the Elliott hire imo :upside_down_face:).
