His work has already paid dividends. Burn Traudt’s redshirt NOW!!!

I think there should be an asterisk because of the extra COVID season messing up all the records, but still cool:

Tony said the same in postgame … Currently a dude for Detroit in his 5th year that is about to become the 2nd all time scorer in NCAA history behind the Pistol…

I dunno, asterisks have never really solved much in terms of record books. Roger Maris had an asterisk next to 61 because the season was longer than when Babe Ruth hit 60. But then Maris was “clean” while McGwire and Bonds weren’t when they hit 70 and 73.

Sports change over time. So there’s always going to be something that is happening beyond the numbers. The best you can do is try to add context to the number in the record book and hope people can appreciate achievements/careers rather than just looking up a number in an almanac or Wikipedia.

Exactly this. It is gonna be in the record books anyway so we just have to accept it. Great for Kihei.

My personal solution has been to mostly ignore the record books** but I know that makes me an idiosyncratic sports fan.

Slightly less cranky thought: the importance of the record books is more to give good context to current stuff, in some ways. Or to take a recent example, bring the past back into the light. Like when Chris Alexander got a flurry of mentions when Huff (I think) was passing him on the all time blocks list.

Great example there. Also Chris and Junior both turned 50 yesterday… sidenote

I totally agree and don’t really care that much. That said, the one thing that’s slightly different here is the sport isn’t changing to 5 years of eligibility going forward. It was a weird one-off, not an evolution of the game. So there will forever be a bunch of dudes from this one tiny period who had a whole extra year relative to everybody else. But there’s probably some sort of comparable situation somewhere (I bet baseball got weird somehow during WWII or something).

But again, I don’t really care to be honest. Like @haney, I pretty much never check record books, so whatever. Am happy for Kihei!

In some situations even the asterisks themselves create complications. For example, if Kihei were already the winningest player in UVA history after 4 seasons, and then he added to that record with his 5th season, and we put an asterisk next to his record… then we really should put a second asterisk there to note that the first asterisk doesn’t mean he didn’t earn the record in 4 years. The first asterisk is just for the total, not the achievement.

Or… if you had a player who finished first all-time in FT% after 4 years, but then in his 5th year he messed up and dropped to third. Do we asterisk his 5-year % to indicate that actually he really was the best FT% shooter of all time – since in other cases we seem to think that 4-year totals are what should really count?

There’s no clean fix. But I will continue to recognize Mamadi as the winningest player in 4 seasons or less.

I feel like I’m in the minority, but I think Reece comes back unless we go very far in March. Just have a feeling that he can really improve his stock, the NIL pull, and a chance to win will bring him back. Barring a final four run, I think him and Franklin will be back.
