UVA January Discussion Thread (and Happy New Year)

You’ll all be shocked to find out I have some thoughts on this topic. :joy: Here goes:

I so agree, haha. There’s like 20 seconds left and they’re down by 5 and the announcer will say that. Yeah, it’s not ideal, but they probably aren’t winning this game unless they hit a three.

I think Trust Tony makes sense in certain contexts, and less sense in others.

I’m a Trusty Tony guy, for the most part, in recruiting contexts. He has both much more info and is much better able to process what he’s seeing. At the opposite extreme, is something like the 2-foul rule. I have 99% of the info that Tony does (like except for any idiosyncratic effects on a particular player), and I think I can process that info about as well as he can. There’s nothing to trust him about – I can make my own decision. The innaresting thing about lineup talk is that’s it’s right in the middle of those two extremes. (Actually, I guess the real opposite extreme would be orange jerseys or should we stream the trips and Blue/White?)

Then – there’s the “Is Tony awesome at everything coaching related?” question. I mean, think of the person you admire most at work, or in your industry. Are they awesome at everything related to their job? Or, do they have a few things they’re awesome at, a bunch of things they’re pretty good at, and a couple things that remind you they’re human? Most likely the latter. For me, Tony’s player personnel choices, in particular in-game, fit in the “things that remind me that Tony is human” bucket, not one of the other two.

ADDENDUM - and lastly, where I think the real issue is – is the temperament question. Some people think it’s fun to dissect the stuff in the last bucket, while others think it’s somehow an affront to the guy or to their fandom. IMO, this last thing is the deepest divide.

I’m sorry you’re sorry you opened your mouth. I’m not! I enjoy the discussion, even if it’s disagreement (sometimes especially when) and I appreciate your response. I do think what you said is just a different way of saying the same thing re: the coach knows better, though. So… we disagree! No big deal. (Not that the Coach usually knows better… he absolutely does… just that that’s a good reason to not debate something).

Here’s an example I’d use for this. In the Miami game, there were plenty of armchair fans, myself one of them, saying during the game that we shouldn’t have played Taine and that we should be playing Dunn all through the first half. Then, when we did play Dunn in the second half, things improved and he never came out of the game from there. It was just a little too late. Now we can’t 100% say that was a “mistake” because we don’t know all of the off the court reasons that he played Taine and there’s more to leading a basketball team than just what happens between the lines. But we can pretty concretely say that, with regard to that specific goal of winning every game which he’s always said is the goal for each individual game, that was a mistake.

Does that mean we’re better coaches than CTB? Of course not, it’s just an example of one time an alternate viewpoint to what he’s doing was correct. What does that mean? Nothing, really, other than being fun to think about and discuss with other fans when you’re watching/following the team and proof that, if you do disagree with what’s happening it doesn’t mean you’re necessarily wrong, because Tony.

JWilly more or less said Tony doesn’t look at those advanced metrics. He sets lineups based on matchups and what he has been seeing with his own eyes in practice and in game. Given that, it wouldn’t be a surprise that he might have a different lineup take on complicated trends that are emerging. Also, there is still room for art here. A strict reliance on metrics can lead you astray as well.

I had a slightly different read on that discussion. J-Willy said Getter and another staff member (Soddy? Caroenter?) do track that stuff.

I get annoyed at the advanced stats bashing because — keep in mind here — we are just talking about whether we scored or didn’t score (or vice versa on D) on a particular possession.

This isn’t exactly splitting the atom, is it? How advanced is “division” ?

Like, maybe this is a “me” thing, but I get skeptical when folks want to pretend they don’t trust division

Taine’s post on instagram. Theme of adversity shaping someone.

(also the kadin like isn’t noteworthy lol. The whole team liked it. Just coincidence that one popped up at the top of the likes).

My personal pet peeve is guys on the internet who think I can’t do it better than Tony. That and when the worker at chipotle doesn’t fill the scoop with meat for the meat portion of my burrito. Like no one is watching closely behind your back. Be the revolutionary hero within the system that we need, chipotle worker. Dont make me ask for double meat just to get a regular portion of meat.

Oh yeah still have a soft spot for taine. Think he has value as a 3/small ball 4 against bigger nonquick wings. But his defense at the guard spot has been rough and that has lead to the lack of playing time and inability to get into rhythm. His shooting over the summer with FIBA was also rough. But from all accounts the kid is a hard worker.

Think he can be a good piece with bond, dunn and gertrude providing athleticism next year.

I’m sure I’m reading too much into the fact that it’s an image of his back, as if he’s exiting or something.

Agree all around on Taine. I think unfortunately his ceiling is likely a small role at best. It’s unfortunate because he works hard etc. But someone has to be rhe 8,9,10th man. And with recent recruiting wins gonna be tough for him to break out
