UVA January Discussion Thread (and Happy New Year)

Curious factoid: according to KenPom, Kadin is 19th nationally in O Rating, 19th in Block %, and 19th in 2pt %. His jersey number? Ninete-- oh no wait it’s 21

Beat me to it (and with actual data).

We have been unstoppable in the first few minutes of each half. I’m not sure if that’s our starting lineup, lack of conditioning or game planning/mid-game adjustments but need to figure it out.

Yeah, Kadin has the highest O rating. Discussed last week, but more an indication of setup for easy flushes at the basket by our guard play.

Debate on whether that’s okay or if we need him to do more to create. To take the team the next level, I think it’s the latter. To me, that represents our biggest opportunity to hit our ceiling.

I think what’s a little different right now is that with Reece unable to take guys off the bounce we don’t have 1.) someone who can create in late shot clock opportunities and 2.) someone who can generate “easy” baskets by drawing contact and getting to the line. Now the team feels like a different version of the Hauser team where we don’t really have a great way to generate points if jumpers aren’t falling. It’s not as extreme as that: we don’t shoot it as well as that team did but we also have a few more wrinkles in terms of scoring with Kadin able to handle at the rim and gardener working midrange

We let Cuse go on an 8-0 run to end 1st half. 4 of those 8 points somehow came in the last 29 seconds when we had the ball and the shot clock was turned off. At the very worst, we should’ve been up 13 going into halftime. I feel like we have no idea when to push the ball or not and it results in some insanely awkward looking “fast breaks” that end in a turnover or forced layup, which then turn into easy scores on the other end. Tony should’ve called timeout the second we pulled down the defensive rebound with about 29 seconds left in the half. Really disappointing end of half management

Totally agree - Reece isn’t even trying, so clearly he’s still around 80%. Sucks because at 100% we really had a special season cooking.

Any backseat doctors out there care to speculate on whether we think he’ll get fully healthy this year?

Reece is actually getting better because of the injury. Learning to hit in spots without having to make those incredible drives. When he gets to 100 percent it could be a deadly combo for us

Excellent point—though I’d still rather have had him at 100 percent all season.

Interested to know what shots you think he could add to his arsenal or to improve on. Floater, for example?

That calm 17 footer toward the end when Cuse was making their run. In the past he would have gone at the D and attacked. Yesterday he calmly drilled it.

For me thats a great start

I get the floater idea but floaters are for guys who cant get to the rim. Reece‼️has such a knack for going around under and up at the rim

In each game’s box score, he lists the score by “quarter”

I assume Tony has told them to “just let the clock go down to almost nothing by dribbling by half court and then try a shot”. I think they just didn’t follow his instructions yesterday.

I personally would like them to just run an offense when we have a full shot clock or so left in the half. Our regular offense already drains the entire shot clock, so at least try to get a good look. Yesterday was the worst of both worlds - the didn’t run out the clock or run a full offense. Instead they rushed the offense, missed the shot (block), and that gave Cuse plenty of time to come down to get their first 2.

(I count the last 2 as a bit of a fluke – Reece was probably going to just drive and shoot with no time left, but just a good steal and pass up court by Cuse.)

Think we still had the use it or lose it timeout left? Or maybe the coach can’t call the timeout from the bench anymore, can’t remember

Tell your kids about 50% from 3 Reece Beekman.

Gets his hand taped up, his 3pt% increases. Unstoppable.

Im afraid this year’s team chance at being great is not going to happen because of Reece’s injury. With a 100% Reece we are a different team
We have 3 pt shooters now who can get hot but with Reece not being able to drive and put pressure on the defense we are not going to realize our full potential. And with games every few days he can’t get enough rest. We have 1 spell with 7 days between games. That was a real gutty performance from Reece yesterday. Pray for a miracle

I don’t think we get 100% Beeks until he can sit for 2 weeks. And we can’t afford right now to sit him for that long.

Agree. We don’t have the option to sit him for 2 weeks to get to 100%. He will be partial Beeks the rest of the way it seems.

Thats true. I just read an article by STL where they say he is getting back to being the player he was. That is a terrible take. IMO I could be wrong but he was playing yesterday at about 70%. On 2 different possessions he let guys drive by him. He got enough of a late rest to come back in and save the game for us

On the fast break chance he had to slow down and look for a dish. He knew he couldn’t elevate to finish.
