Yes, I think the difference between descriptive and predictive is worth noting.
The rank over the last 10 games better describes our current play than the overall season rank.
But if you are trying to predict the future, youâll probably do better with more data incorporated rather than less, with some exceptions like the ones discussed.
The grey area for prediction is when there seems to have been a qualitative change that would make you want to weight the data from a certain stretch more, but you can never be 100% sure.

All that is very true, but it also doesnât account for the variation from mean in a teamâs performance, and I have a suspicion that that variation is on the increase across the board. Look at Kansasâ home performance vs. its road performance. I would be very interested if anyoneâs metrics can explain Georgia Techâs record this year. NCAA basketball has entered its Wild, Wild West era. If someone has no vested interest in the NCAAT this year, I imagine they are going to find it very, very entertaining.

This is really interesting. Looking at it qualitatively, I think itâs worth asking whatâs changed and whether those changes are durable. For me, boiling down a bunch of stuff reductively, my list is:
- Minor in rotation and knock on effects (Better roles for Blake and Groves and sorta RD). Durable? I think so
- Takeover Reece. Durable? It will probably vary
- IMac making midrange shots. Durable? Iâd expect a better trend than the first half of the season
