Atkins and Mitchell both averaged about 4 points a game as second years. We remember how good they were by their last year but it was a process.

Excited to read. As always, I’m interested in counter cases as a method of figuring out a way forward. We had a solid stretch of 6-7 games where our offense was top 60/50.

What were / weren’t we doing then that we are now? What were or weren’t other teams doing then that they are now? What does all of that suggest about what we need to change?

Obviously Jake and iMac got more 3s in rhythm or semi-open. But what led to those?

Of course, I am but one reader out of many. Thank you good sir.

Almost like tendency breakers and counters in football.

The opponent has our game plan, so how can we design good alternatives?

Yeah. But I’m even a step back from that. Is it that opponents have figured out our playbook? Or did we just get away from something good that was working?

(I think the former, but it would be interesting to check that impulse by taking a closer look at how that stretch compares to our last four outings).

Everyone knows everyone’s playbook at this point. Think its just modifying and tweaking where we can. The players do have to make shots. Missing 22 out of 23 during that stretch against UNC - can’t blame the offense for all of it. Players have to put it in the hole.

I think I’ll go with an inserted option 3….

Lack of continuity, proper development, and player evaluations has led to us having guys who can’t execute the playbook to the extent that makes it successful on the defensive end… Along with the fact that teams are shooting and making more 3’s.

Lack of continuity, proper development, and player evaluations has led to us having guys who can’t overcome what is probably an outdated and uncreative offensive scheme.

So overall, I think the scheme is probably outdated on defense and definitely outdated on offense. But we aren’t getting, keeping. or developing guys in a way that makes them successful in these schemes.

I agree that’s definitely a factor. But all of that was also true when we played like a top 50/60 offense during a decently long stretch of games. So I don’t think it explains all of our woes or the entire gap between top 50/60 and the offense of the last four games.

I will give Tony kudos for still engaging, given how he is also a reserved person. Many would disappear after the last week but Tony still hosting his coaches’ corner tonight too.

We were playing against bad teams that didn’t guard us in a disciplined manner. Then our schedule got harder

That’s an oversimplification

Hmmm Im on the side that the offense needs work but they were playing good up until the Wake game. Wake and UNC are good but Clemson is probably a more sound team than Wake and the offense was good there.

Clemson is by far worse defensive team than Wake Forest.
Clemson is 10th in the ACC in defensive rating.

It is not a coincidence that the games we just happen to struggle in offensively were against the other top seven defenses in the ACC.

There’s truth to this but it’s not the whole story and it’s not particularly useful for figuring out how we get better.

It’s funny if you look back at the Blue/White scrimmage thread and how the results almost perfeclty mirrored what happened during our season. Here were the results and what the consensus takeaways seemed to be:

  • Rohde shot poorly and didn’t do much creating offensively … we wrote that off as a one-game sample size and how good our own defense is lol (wrong)

  • Minor looked downright bad … we adjusted expectations from likely starter to potentially out of the rotation (check)

  • Buchanan was ahead of schedule but still raw … we thought he would play more than expected (check)

  • McKneely struggled to score when his outside shots weren’t falling … we said he would still be a double digit scorer and figured he was just tired from the pre-game shooting contest (semi-check)

  • Reece was Reece … we said he would easily be out best player (check)

  • Harris 2-9 shooting … we said his energy was great and he added a different element to the team (technically check)

  • Bond was great … we were calling for him to be a starter and even saw some suggest he may be one of our top scorers (wrong)

  • Gertrude struggled offensively but made some wow plays that got us all excited … we expressed concern that Harris would eat into most of his minutes (check)

Other notes that caught my eye was multiple people saying Robinson looked like our best big. Keep forgetting about him but he’s going to be awesome. And lots of people were praising Bliss for looking poised.

We all looked to this stretch as a key to the season. Unfortunately, we aren’t playing well and our competition just got a lot better. It always came down to the Bass Tech through Duke games that everyone saw as a problem. Beat BC and GT and it will feel better. The Pitt loss hurt more than we knew at the time.

Will just add for no particular reason that the adjOE for a single game already accounts for the adjDE of the opponent, so…

Positive takeaway is that the offense can’t be THAT bad?

it hasn’t always been so hopefully not forever :man_shrugging:
