🏀 UVa Men's Basketball - January 2024

Just noticed Dunn hit a 3 yesterday? Must have happened in the first 5 minutes before it was on tv.

Anyway…I could see it ending up a really hard decision for him. Or not, all depends on how he and his family look at it. If he’s projected as a late 1st rounder let’s say early 20s…that’s what $3M guaranteed? More? Not sure. But teams aren’t that invested in players chosen that late. If he’s not panning out, they’ll move on easily. The real (as if $3M isn’t real ha) money is in getting to the 2nd contract. There’s a good argument for a high risk player as you put it, their best chance of sticking is to be as well prepared as possible year one unless they’re chosen at least top half of the first round.

Should also add with NIL, it’s not an all or nothing game anymore. Might be wrong but I imagine certain people would find a way to get him maybe $200K in deals to keep him around.

if he hasn’t developed a shot in two years here and is still airballing free throws, in his mind what is a 3rd year going to do for that?

Also when your brother is an MLB player the financial need/ want is a little different. (Assuming his brother still plays somewhere)

Great spot for RD to be in

I would say no brainer for him to leave early if you’re guaranteed somewhere in the first 25 spots.

If you come back you’re betting on 1) having better success developing your shot in a college atmosphere (schoolwork, fewer resources, les time) and 2) that you’ll stay healthy. Any of those two things don’t happen, you’re potentially out of the first round and things get murkier.

His family has been through this (although different) with his older brother. They understand the business.

Yep and Florida creeps up to a Q1 win. State loss now a Q2.

Per usual you nailed it.

Dunn did get an open 3 early and looked comfortable taking it.

For as much as I bitched about RD being a draft prospect I do feel for him. There’s a lot of money on the table to grab and I’ll never tell anyone to not take advantage of that.

The hard part is he’s a significant project at the next level and I’m worried he won’t get the time, attention, and system he needs to fill his full potential. However, UVA not be right spot to do thay as well. Honestly he’d benefit from being an under the radar guy in the obscurity of the Mizzu Valley Conference where he can develop without the expectations. But that’s not reality.

Only thing I have to add to the Dunn draft chatter is that if the standard were “ready to contribute in the NBA immediately” there would only be 3-5 guys drafted in any given year

The guys that are better than RD on the college level who don’t wind up getting drafted, don’t wind up getting drafted because their skills are a dime a dozen in the NBA. If RD goes first round, it’s because some NBA team thinks he has “home run” skills, likely on the defensive end.

I feel like we all agree on this, but then I see incredulity on why the NBA would want a guy who could be a HR hitter, but might strike out, over a bunch of guys who are really good at hitting the relay man or whatever, when RD is throwing the ball into the stands.

That analogy is so bad it is actually perfect when I think about it

Dunn needs to strike while the iron is hot. If he comes back and doesn’t demonstrate improvement on offense, now he’s a year older with even more evidence that he’ll be an offensive liability in the NBA. If they give you first-round money, you take that money, Ryan!

You’re all welcome in advance

Recovering from surgery, and is a free agent.

But he was a top 20 pick, so likely has made a buck or three.

Yup that’s the cruel part of this game.

Isn’t there talk that this year’s draft is weak as well? If he comes back and improves he still might end up in the late first round range because of the depth of the other draft prospects.

Yeah but if he came back I would feel better about next year’s team and that is what is really important I think we all would agree.

Reece at over 3 assist to 1 turnover ratio, given the context of this team, is pretty freakin bonkers.

Need to hit him with a 7 figure NIL deal AND a personal call from Brogdon talking about how he still made it in the NBA after a 5th year and was an all american. Within a 24 hour span to make the message hit more with the NIL money in mind too. And a guarantee that we won’t add a stretch 4 who takes half the season for us to make them playable.

(edit: Rohde also at 3.1 assists to 1.1 turnovers a game. A Tony Bennett staple).

Agree completely. Let Reece and Dunn get theirs, we look good for 2 more NBA dudes, and we have Bliss/Cofie/ARob/reclass Mallory ready to go…supporting an improved X/Bond, etc.
