It had to be pre-CTB… isnt one of the weaknesses of the packline most players vacate the offensive end once a shot goes up?

One of the few benefits of missing a lot of shots is the opportunities for a lot of offensive rebounds.

The offensive rebounding has been a green shoot in the Jordan Minor starter era. They didn’t get much against some good defensive rebounding teams in WF and VT, but against an average rebounding GT team and below average NCSU team, they were able to get some opportunities without getting too open in defensive transition.

The Minor era has changed everything. We started out this season getting outrebounded by about 20 boards. Now we have the double digit rebounding advantage

I love the things that Minor does that show up in the box score. But he does a ton of things that don’t, too. Such as:

Even when he doesn’t get a rebound, he’s keeping the other team’s big men off the boards. We’re not giving up nearly as many second chances as we used to.

He has been really good at deflecting entry passes into the post, and poking away dribbles on hedges.

He sets strong screens. Not Jack Salt-level screens, but pretty good. Even when not setting a screen, his wide body clears space, particularly for teammates driving to the basket.

He attacks the basket. I wish he wouldn’t rely on those reverse layups so much, but he is undersized (well, more like under-tall) and not the most explosive leaper, and his shot fake is effective. He’s even started making aggressive one- and two-dribble moves from the post, which has opened up the offense.

His presence has taken pressure off Blake, and Blake has played better lately, too.

Minor is not a dominant player, by any stretch. But he’s a really important piece that the team had been missing.

Minor’s spin to left hand hook seems to be money too

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now, but here is the current box and whisker plot for our Torvik game scores, 100 being the highest and 0 being the lowest. We’ve played a lot of really high level games! I think it’s obvious, but the bad ones have been… gross at best.

So we’ve flatlined?

Okay so we have the numbers 0 to 100, and there’s a dot, and some other dots, and a line, and… two lines… and… yeah…

The median looks to be in the low 90s.

Half of our game results (above the median of a 92 game score or to the right of the 3rd dot for @dave92) we have played like a top 10 team in the country.

One fourth of our game results have been (below the 1st quartile of a 28 game score or between the first and second dot) we have played at the level or worse than the 275th best team in the country.

It’s pretty clear that Minor is a good basketball player and it’s obvious why we were excited to land him. Is he going to be perfect every game? No. But that’s okay.

His defense is a revelation. He’s gone from unplayable to one of the best 1-on-1 defenders on a team with Beekman and Dunn.

Offensively, his screening ability makes sides a realistically viable scheme. Defensively, he fills a hole in the post that we had to work around for a few months.

I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that Dunn and Buchanan are playing a lot better and look more comfortable since Minor has come onto the scene.

This team still has plenty of flaws and idk what the rest of the season holds, but a few weeks ago there was a feeling of despair. I think that’s mostly gone, even if we lay an egg tomorrow and/or end up missing the tournament.

Will just dampen expectations a bit - minor did play 22 minutes against wake and we lost by 20 in that one

@DFresh11 You need to ask JWilly why we take so many 2-point shots just inside the 3-point line. Is that a strategy I am not aware of?

I dont hate that as much as most people do. Shoot em when you got em

If only this team had Shayok Thompson Armaan and Morsell. We would score 100 pts a game on midrange jumpers.

Nates Oates somewhere vommitting violently into a toilet at that thought mummering ā€œ3pters and layups only. THREE POINTERS AND LAYUPS ONLYā€

I don’t mind, and sometimes like, mid-range shots and long 2s.**

Perhaps interesting - monthly Torvik:

  • November - 23 overall / 177 offense / 3 defense
  • December - 117 overall / 184 offense / 84 defense
  • January - 69 overall / 200 offense / 21 defense
  • Overall - 62 overall / 186 offense / 9 defense

I won’t restart the ā€œwe are not trying to change anything offensivelyā€ debate (because I’m right, but also a nice guy, and it hurts me to see those who disagree with me flail so much…), but our offense has been fairly consistent, at least in looking at monthly periods.

Fwiw, Minor in the starting rotation:

  • 60 / 281 / 5

Minor in the starting rotation, only the Ws:

  • 23 / 183 / 6

(sorry to interrupt the ā€œMinor’s screens really goosed our offenseā€ discourse. I was really enjoying it!)
