I think you are looking at it individually. I remember the last time yāall brought this topic up, @AdventiveQuasar brought up the stats about how lineups with Rohde in them, even with Rohde alone without reece, annihilate lineups without Rohde in them offensively even with Rohdeās individual production being meh. Thatās how Tony is seeing it.
Again itās reasonable to be frustrated with Rohdeās performance. However the āstatsā show the solution, long term, is not on the bench. So our best hope is for Rohde to either be more assertive offensively or hope Minor/Buchanan being established allows us to do more DHO and continuous ball screen stuff that will benefit Rohde and may even benefit Gertrude based on how both played at their previous stops. Rohde is the only one this season (this specific season with this specific roster) who can give Tony what he needs at the 3 spot.
However the NC State game should make you happy. It shows that when Rohde is playing well Tony has been willing to sit him and someone else step up. That may be Tony adapting as well.
A lot of these issues will be solved when we have Bliss Mallory and Perry in our guard rotation next year.

Oh yeah that too. Make an open 3. 1-12 from 3. Needs to hit 6 of his next 12 to catch up to Rohde, and then Tony might have to compare and contrast the setting up others to score vs Gertrudeās athleticism trade off.

Not sure if youāve noticed but I havenāt beaten that drum in a couple weeks.
That said, I think all of Rohde, Gertrude, Bond, and Dante have massive concerns right now and Iāve accepted that each of them is at best a year away. Iām on the Taine train now.

I think some of the marginal advantage Rohde had has decreased with our return to running B/M so heavily. Donāt need a āsecond ball handlerā as much in B/M. Given this trend Iād also like to see Taine continue to get more opportunities

Hereās the thing @Hooandtrue ā¦.You shouldnāt have to go on a statistical scavenger hunt to find a positive metric for a guy who is starting on an ACC team and plays about 30 minutes a game. Thatās a fact.
At some point, these metrics/stats/things matter - especially in the aggregate. There are a lot of bad stats to choose from, but Iāll go with this one for now.
Would it surprise you to know that Rohde has the worst PER in the ACC for anyone who has played:
Over 175 mins
Over 200 mins
Over 300 minutes
Over 400 minutes
Over 500 minutes
Over 600 minutes.
DFL. I could go on and cite his PER rankings amongst the Power 6 Conferences, but I wonāt. Typically, when metrics donāt align with feelings/observations, it becomes easier to attack the metric or start creating false narratives to distract from the issue. I do it too.
But DFL is DFL.
With all that said we will need him this year and the next two years. I talked with some guys today that are not part of LRA and we all agreed that injuries happen during February and March. A title contender loses a key player and all the sudden theyāre not the same. Rohde took some steps at Louisville and maybe he parlays that into another positive performance.
This is what makes it fun when we all watch the same shit and come to different conclusions.

This is a bigger hurdle to Gertrude getting minutes moving forward Rohde could ever be. Out of all the offenses I would pick to get Gertrude on the floor and capitalize on his current strengths, Blocker mover would not be in. Not as much downhill opportunity.
My hope is that the return to B/M is helping everyone get comfortable while we welcome back Minor and Buchanan (and go away from Groves at the 5) and then beginning of February, with everyone more comfortable we start showing a little more versatility offensively.
Thereās still stuff like flair screens, etc. Man Brogdon and Perrantes had that chemistry down on moving the ball together in sides.

It would not surprise me because you and dave bring it up every 50 minutes LOL. Itās the same argument over and over. Itās not a scavenger hunt (I think plus minus is more readily available than PER), itās what we are watching. Outside a few moments, everytime Rohde is off the floor we look worse which speaks to how inconsistent and incomplete our bench depth is at that wing spot.
Again, Everything you are saying is right. Rohde has been really rough given his minutes. When you envision 30 minute starter, his performance so far isnāt what you want.
However Tony probably sees Rohde pulling together as this teamās best chance at reaching itās potential. And now heās more comfortable. And now he has Minor and more comfortable freshman Buchanan setting screens for him instead of Groves (and them rolling off the screen) which is also important since Rohde doesnāt have the athleticism or the crafftiness (yet on this part) to shake his man one on one.
I donāt really care about Rohdeās past performances if his play begins to uptick in the coming weeks, which playing these heavy minutes and trusting him could lead to that payoff.
Weāll see how it goes. I think there will be games where Rohde struggles, like vs FSU. I also think there are games where he could excel, like vs VT and Duke with them having no real wing defenders.

Except we see Reece start off ball in an awful lot of our possessions. Iām not entirely sure why that would be, but it seems to be the case.

Im trying to think of which one I will be more right in.
The Reece Kihei wars I was adamant that Reece needed the keys. Only to find he may be better off the ball being more assertiveā¦ but he became more assertive with the keysā¦
I think in the Rohde discourse, I am on the Rohde playing 30 minutes will pay off. And my gut says we are close to the tipping point where we are going to be a well oiled machine and Rohde is really going to shine when things get rolling. And if Rohde doesnāt pan out Ill be double depressed. Cause Rohde not being able to pull through also means our team is going to be real and we miss the tournament. .
