And another Twitter comment-

He was really young when he came to Virginia and likely slower than some to mature. Clearly has grown up quite a bit since his time at Virginia.
This is probably the best he’s ever played. Assume this gets him another NBA shot and clearly the match with Luka is special. Cuban, do your thing!
My read is if Luka wants him with the Mavs, Cuban would sign him immediately.
I mean everyone keeps saying that…but ignoring the fact that Tobey is under contract for another year with Valencia and the Mavs have 4 centers on the roster (incl. Boban who they announced two days ago they would re-sign).
The Mavs are the obvious choice. I know they could work something out to get shake out their rotation but the contract in Spain is going to be hard to navigate.
If the Mavs decide they want to make it happen, it’ll happen. Remember that Tobey was averaging 8 points and 5 boards per game when he signed that deal, and I don’t think Valencia is even in the top league. I don’t think the terms are public other than the duration, but realistically it can’t be for more than… $400-500k, maybe? And its only got 1 year left.
If the Mavs went up to Valencia and offered them a mil for the rights to Tobey, I think they’d accept it in a heartbeat and that’s chump change for the Mavs.
Valencia Basket is one of the top teams in Europe. They are one of the permanent licensed teams in Euroleague. While they were only 9th in the Euroleague, they made the semifinals in the Liga ACB.
They are no shrinking violets and would ask for a hefty transfer fee as that is how European sports works. Jack Grealish was the most recent high profile football transfer and his agreed upon transfer fee was 100 million pounds. That is just the transfer fee and nothing to do with his current salary.
Right, and I get that transfer fees are a big deal in Euro sports, but that’s a good football player vs a mediocre basketball player. I’d guess Grealish’s salary is 20x Tobey’s this year, suggesting a 5m transfer fee for Tobey if they’re proportional. I’m trying to find a record of recent basketball transfer fees to see how they stack up against football (I assume they’re much lower, but I could be wrong) but its oddly difficult to find anything post 2015 or so.
Even so, if the Mavs pay $2m to Valencia and then give Tobey a 2-year contract for $4.5M, that’s not a significant amount of money to them.
The contract size matters because the NBA team can account for only up to $775k of the buyout that goes to the player’s international team, with any remainder coming from the player’s paycheck (question 77 on this in case it doesn’t link correctly): NBA Salary Cap FAQ
This article has some discussion of buyout situations from last season, when the buyout amount NBA teams could cover was 750k: The NBA is pillaging Europe but not all cases are the same - Eurohoops
Well worst case scenario Toblerone will have to wait one year to be reunited with Luka.
1 year is an eternity in NBA years, but then Kawhi will be with the Mavs, Zion will be in LA.
Ah, ok, thanks. I didn’t know about the 775k cutoff. They could make up the difference to Tobey, but then it’d be a salary cap hit. Not huge in the grand scheme of things, but that’s something they live to optimize.
