UVA vs Lehigh Thread

Lol. Why are you arguing this right now? You saw him out there. Lost. Totally lost. So it’s my fault you were so hyped on him?

I was with you in the first half. I’m pumping the brakes on Taine until I actually see him, you know, get minutes. Not saying he won’t be solid I just am a little less optimistic since he’s been passed by a walk on, albeit with he best walk on of all time from what I’m learning tonight lol

Actually I was pretty clear about having relatively low expectations for taine. Got shouted down for it in fact, probably by you.

And on Reece no I thought he would take a big step forward and he hasn’t.

I don’t claim to be right on all things. I’m just obviously right on more things than you.

Ok, not that 2+2=4 all the time, but I saw Joe in his first exhibition game at UVA (my daughter was a 1st year as well) and turned to her and said that she needed to marry him because Joe was going to be in the NBA. Taine has work to do, but there is a way he moves and shoots that makes me think he can be a player to watch about 10-15 games from now.

Tony is long an out of the money call option with Taine but you thought you were long a massively in the money private round of the next mega unicorn. That’s what is off: the fact that you didn’t understand what Taine was.

I didn’t watch the second half, so I feel qualified to weigh in:

  • Manhattan isn’t even in Manhattan, it’s in the Bronx, and not even in the part of the Bronx that’s technically part of Manhattan.
  • Taine didn’t play last year and I suspect that’s bad for development and I hope Tony keeps that in mind and I know some of you think it’s disrespectful for me to express my hopes and dreams so I apologize
  • 2 and 0 with the 19-20 strategy so … :grimacing:.

I don’t understand this analogy but I’ll say we have *a lot of players with limited upside that apparently need a long development curve in ALL aspects of their game. Since nobody seems to have the natural offensive talent to get them on the floor immediately we have to see if they have the upside defensively to play immediately which also seems to be a No as that may take 2-3 years in our system. So even though on paper our 2022 class seems to have potential offensively that had better be the case otherwise they will not be playing much, unless their quick defensive studies.

Really can’t be overstated how impressive it is that Tony can make an impression like this on a kid in only 1 year

Umm did you see some of his dunks in highschool ? Kid has some hops.

Advanced Stats after game 7

Takeaways:

  • Kadin’s rise continues
  • Even as he gets slightly more minutes, Igor’s numbers are great
  • Reece, Kadin, and Armaan are an absolutely great trio defensively
  • Malachi is improving
  • Tony might be onto something, Murray’s numbers are not good

Its somewhat demeaning to keep referring to Malachi as ‘the walk on’ who should not be on the court. Obviously Tony sees value with Malachi and i do to. His defense is head and shoulders above all of the scholarship 1st yr players.

He also would have had plenty of div 1 offers if not for the fact that he incurred injuries that kept him off the court for stretches of his high school career. Those close to him and in the know always knew what his potential could be. I admire him for wanting to compete at the highest level and earning time on the court. Im rooting for this kid. He will earn a full scholarship at some point.

And oh … That made 3 pointer was pure silk …

Perhaps we should all agree that New Zealand and Australia are not hotbeds of bball talent, and TB/Kirk Penny connections aside, a Plan B American high school recruit is much more likely to be a better 6 thru 9 rotation option.

Manhattan offered him. Prior to injury at Louisa County he was receiving interest from a number of DI Programs. Even a few from the ACC was showing interest. This took place when he was a Sophomore.

I know I’ve been knocking the walk on (or at least, the play the walk on strategy) but if he can shoot, that’s great! Then shoot. Because someone on this team has to be willing to do it. I still hold the controversial opinion that having guys who can shoot is good, and that unwillingness to shoot, assuming one can shoot, is no virtue.

Tony from the post game presser:

Q With Reece, I think that’s the first time he’s had double figures or in this year. How nice was it to see him sort of fall in a groove?

A The first half I thought I thought he had a couple of uncharacteristic turnovers, missed a few quite a bit of easy ones. And the other day I thought this is one of the best quotes or things I heard, maybe before we went to the tournament, my father was here and he watched our practice. I asked, ‘what would you say to these guys?’ And he said, he gave us three specific things, but one of them I thought was great. He said, ‘fellas as players in the game, especially at times, you’re going to have to outlast,’ and I thought he was gonna say outlast your opponent, but he said, ‘you’re gonna have to outlast your doubt’… you sometimes doubt yourself… you missing a shot, you miss layups. Like you just keep playing and outlast it. I thought Reece did that in the the Georgia game. That’s hard to play when missing some layups, that stuff can rattle around. You got to outlast your doubt. It’s such a good comment. So Reece, I thought, you know, we’re going to need him to attack, make his plays. He’ll keep getting better at finishing his shot and he is slowly improving. And I think, we need as much as we can get from everybody to contribute on the offensive end for sure.

Awesome. Maybe this explains the overt encouragement I heard from the bench for Reece during the entire first half of the UGa game.
