šŸ€ UVA vs Wake Forest, Sat 17 Feb, Noon, ESPN2

The hard thing for us offensively is how far apart our shooting numbers are… essentially we have 3 very high level capable shooters, and then everyone else is below average to downright awful… makes it easy to mark for a defense. And then getting all the good scorers on the court together leads to defensive deficiencies as well as ball handling issues.

I hear Hoos have reached out to Lakers about a LeBron trade.

Well it can’t get any worse… right?

Ask me again Monday night.

Offense was great against Pitt but we mentally broke when they didn’t stop missing by about mid 2nd half. We would’ve been up 10+ on pretty much anyone if not for the historically good offense by Pitt (most opponent PPP at JPJ besides the Zion Duke game?).

Didn’t watch the whole game today but we just looked so nervous to me. Think we’ll feel way less pressure on Monday

Just got home.

(1) Second best defensive performance on the season — maybe the best. Hardly any clean looks for Sallis, Monsanto and Carr. We destroyed the limey ginger.

(2) Dean Smith and Coach K would have had 10,000 technicals if the rule from today for Bennett were applied to them.

(2a) Refs were atrocious in the first half. Tackle on a screen uncalled, followed by a ā€œmovingā€ screen on the next possession — cost us 5-6 points. Not to mention several uncalled pushes and walks. That T was three games of frustration boiling over.

(3) We have more foot-on-the-line made jumpers than anyone in college hoops — x3, it seems.

(4) Huge win. Nothing gross about a vital W in February.

(5) Next big home streak started today.

(6) Fuck VPI — and Carolina sucks.

Idk I just think Wake is an abnormally tough matchup for us. We jumped on them from the starting lineup then let them creep back in when subs started happening. Reece also came out swinging to start second half. I thought both teams were locked in on just trying to get the win however they had to.

The free throw thing was weird, but also we didn’t have a guard take one until we were already 0-8. I don’t have the stats to prove it but we’re also notoriously bad at 1 and 1 situations.

Honestly this was the game I was most worried about left on the schedule coming into this week.

Rewatching, and it’s clear Wake coaches their guys to be hyper aggressive with their off arm on drives. I don’t know what the actual line is for an offensive foul on those, but it seemed to be annoying our guys at times.

There was one fast break where Miller gave Reece a forearm shiver that knocked him to the floor, and nothing was called.

Even on TV you could hear the crowd reaction to that one. Ridiculous no-call.

Yep just saw that one. And then another one of those stupid screens that masquerade as post-ups, where Efton basically holds onto the big so he can’t contest a drive. Gonzaga used to be the master practitioners of that one. It is a dark art that I would like our bigs to learn though, never gets called.

Where do you think Reid learned it, even if he was there for a total of 17.6 seconds?

Wow I actually forgot he was there.

Rewatching the highlights: It was Sallis, not Miller, who knocked Reece down.

Also noticed that on iMac’s huge three near the end of the game, Buchanan set a helluva pick. And kept Reid off the boards after Hildreth’s last-second attempt to make sure there was no buzzer-beating tip-in. Buchanan played a great game.

Pitts guards did it as well. Refs just not calling it. Miss iMac would use it some.

It really felt like the pressure of a march madness game to me and I guess you have to be thrilled after a March madness win no matter how it happens

Survive and advance.

In this case survive and stay in the hunt for another ACC title.

Random thoughts…

I would need to rewatch to confirm, but I thought Rohde had a really good defensive possession with about 1:45 left in the game and I think we were up by 4. He was isolated on a guy driving to the bucket and played it really well. I thought it was a big moment watching it live.

Also, when Blake missed the and 1 FT, Dunn got the offensive rebound and was fouled immediately. Even though I knew he would miss the front end, I was happy because it got us one foul closer to the double bonus. Unfortunately being in the double bonus didn’t matter today because our FT shooting sucked so bad.

Rohde was great on D today head to head. And Wake targeted him over and over

He’s a good defender in general. If he ever figures out his shot, he’s suddenly a very damn good player.
