🏀 UVA women's basketball 2023- 2024

really good win.

We have our future guards. Need to hit the portal big to replace Cam Taylor/London Clarkson/Sam Brunelle.

Tony, you’ve been critical of the women’s frantic out-of-control pace. What do you think of their first ACC win?

Tony:

Also Tony: We’ve added a new player to the men’s roster. Kymorty Johnson will be playing soon.

11-for-13 from 2 as a guard is pretty sweet.

They shot the lights out compared to what i have seen. Mo sending a message.

She looked so much better driving the lane and working within the flow of the offense rather than chucking up a deep 3 early in the shot clock. Still a healthy 7 attempts from the perimeter but didn’t see any that looked forced.

Mo even passed up a lot of threes that she’s taken in earlier games – mostly where she was open but a little deep and still early in the shot clock. Given she was “hot” tonight that restraint is especially impressive. Getting smarter.

McGhee starting the last couple of games has made a difference as well. She’s been good.

Mo with a huge game! Maybe her breakout statement game.

I sense Sam’s role is diminishing some as the season goes on even though her minutes aren’t dropping much. Think she’ll lose some more time when Mir comes back.

Great win girls! On the road in the ACC is no easy feat. Hoping we can earn an NIT bid this year and actually be able to play unlike last year.

It’s curious that Sam got only 4 minutes in a game where Noyan got 25. Kudos to Noyan (and a great sign for the future), but normally Sam is our first backup big after Cam and London get in their inevitable foul trouble. Wonder if she’s hurting, or if we just needed a little bit more quickness.

Someone on the sabre said they saw her in a boot a day or two ago

Great win. Proud of the team.

I’m fine with Sam being a veteran locker room and bench presence at this point. Injury history being what it is, probably time to play folks with more upside.

From far this is what I think. Good call.

She has a bright future and after injuries etc less is more for her basketball wise

Only 6 TOs in the 2nd half. Good job.

We’ve got Clark, McGhee and Johnson with Vaughn and Brown for a year and maybe Pauley in reserve for the backcourt. Noyan and Hurd, a 4 star recruit, in the frontcourt. And umm…that’s it. And that’s a tiny backcourt with 3 of the top 4 in the 5’7” range. And Coach Mox seems to like to play a big rotation.

So yeah, gonna need to hit the portal big for lots of bigs.

Joy Woolfolk’s sister would’ve been a really nice get in the 24 class, but can’t blame her for choosing Georgia I guess. Lost out on her and Zay’s brother to UGA basketball.

Yes and no. I mean, officially the squad has 14 players on it atm and 9 of them are guards. So, just going by players per position the squad seems a little smaller than it really is, because players like O and Mir are listed as being guards despite being 6’2" and 6’ (I think), respectively and very athletic. Plus, Noyan is 6’3" and has come along really well for a first year and Brown plays way bigger than she is.

I think the real issue is losing Cam. She’s been an absolute workhorse inside with the size, strength, and aggression to go right through people (she gets called for a lot of charges, but after it happens once other players usually get out of her way) and there’s no one else on the roster who can replicate that. I’d kind of be fascinated to see Brown at the 4 in an “Armaan Franklin is our best PF” kind of way and then Noyen at the 5.

And then the real answer to the question is: “What does Mir do next year?” If she comes back, then, yeah, they’ll want a big out of the portal but the team will have so much athleticism it’ll probably work out. But if she doesn’t come back, then the front court is going to be underwhelming almost no matter what.

Correct me if I’m wrong on Mir but eligibility isn’t an issue, right? Class of 2020 out of HS, her freshman year at UConn was 2020-21, which was the “doesn’t count” COVID year. 2021-22 She mid-season transferred to UVA but should count as her de facto freshman season, and then last season (2022-23) her effective sophomore year. This current season is her 4th in college, but (a) if she plays, it’s just her junior year, and (b) if she takes off the rest of the season for more rehab, it’s a redshirt year. Either way, next year she’s eligible as either a senior (if she plays this year) or a RS junior (if she doesn’t), unless the worry is she might have her degree in hand and want to either go pro or grad transfer?

With this win, the NIT’s back on the menu, but it’s still an uphill climb. In order to finish at or above .500, we need to either win 6 of our last 11 games, or win 5 of 11 plus get 2 wins in the ACCT. What’s left:

4 good win chances: Pitt (H), Clemson (H), BC (A), Wake (A)
2 upsets to reasonably hope for: Syracuse (H), Miami (H)
5 opportunities for big upsets*: UNC (H), VT (A), Louisville (A), Duke (A), VT (H)

If we win exactly 5 of those, we probably end up roughly a 10-seed in the ACCT, so we’d get one easy game and then a marginal Top 25 team the next day.

*At FSU would have fallen in this category too, so there’s that
