Sheâs heating up now. Might be our best player already.
Kymora Johnson best 3pt shooter ever in UVA history mens or womens
Passing frenetic and no one really boxing out. Similar to last year⌠hope Kymora is more of a field general moving forward.
Finally locking in here before the half
Anyone know the nature of Lawsonâs injury? Sheâs been out since before the blue white.
refs are atrocious. 4 whiffd calls in a row. Kymora traveled because she was fouled.
Too many turnovers and not great shooting percentages. But Iâd be surprised if those shooting percentages donât improve over time.
I had to turn it off⌠it was getting very frustrating how loose of a game Virginia was playing. Kymora was trying passes she had no business trying and there were 3s being thrown up for no reason⌠changed over to the MLS playoffs.
We were fortunate that UMES is so bad, because we were kind of a mess. It wasnât until the fourth quarter, when we went with a lineup of Kymora-Yonta-Brown-Olivia-Cam, and clearly focused on getting shots at the rim, that we finally looked like a team in control (and boosted the lead from 10 to 24). I could be wrong but I donât think we turned it over during that last stretch either.
And btw, what is with all the injuries? I know the deal with Mir and Sam, but what happened to Lawson and Clark? And why didnât Clarkson play?
Probably should be our starting line up until the injuries resolve.
Two ball handlers, Yonta with her 8 assists to 1 turnover and Kymora as the Kyle Guy scorer. Floor spacing. Yonta and Gillian bring defensive toughness and help with rebounding. McGhee at the 4 spaces the floor.
From the bits that I watched, Brown brings a significant chaos factor too. Sheâs doing stuff, good and bad, on both ends of the floor.
Agreed. That lineup absolutely torched UMES who refused to go away for most of the game.
Also, agree the ref-ing was very rough. On balance, it was probably in UVAâs favor but but it was just egregiously poor at some points. UVA had at least three âtravelsâ that were the result of the players being shoved. Rose said Shedrick would have felt at home.
Fourth quarter was also when Taylor realized she could just steamroll through the tiny UMES players. She had a couple charges (probably deserved, and in one case the UNES player was lucky her chest wasnât caved in. ARob is probably the only one on the GUYSâ team who could have stopped her there) but by middle of Q4 UMES was triple teaming her every time she got to the paint and it utterly didnât matter.
She reminded me of a buddy of mine in HS who was 6â8â, 300 lbs his junior year. Played OL and has good hands (piano player). The other team tried an onside kick and kicked it right at him. He grabbed it out of the air, put his head down and started running. The guys on the other team were just like âOh, shit.â Took 7 of them to bring him down. Taylor had that kinda vibe.
Didnât get to watch the entire game last night but saw it in parts. And I generally agree with everything thatâs been said on here so far. And I appreciate there being a community willing and eager to talk womenâs ball. The little bit of the game I saw I watched with my 3 yr old daughter who was super into it and could not have made this papa any more proud and excited for what could be for her.
As far as the Hoos, this team is going to roller coaster to watch. Not dissimilar to the menâs team you can see the bones of something special or good there, but itâs raw. The women are a bit rawer and further behind, and part of that is likely due to the nature of their style of play. That said I think thereâs going to be some feast and famine moments here. When they click they have the potential to knock off a VT or an ND. But they are also just as likely to be a little loose a little sloppy and get worked by 20 by one of them.
Iâm ready to strap in for this ride and see where it goes.
The sooner Yonta Vaughn is given the keys to the car as this teamâs starting point guard, the better. Sheâs not a scorer, but she contributes in all the other ways and makes everyone else around her so much better.
Yeah, I missed the beginning of the game, but it doesnât look like Vaughn started? That was pretty surprising to me because I thought she was obviously the best choice at PG (unless Mo took a step and beat her out).
The O and D are both raw, but there were possessions where they got out running and the passing was popping and you could see what Coach Mox is trying to do. And then theyâd have possessions where theyâd kinda wander around a half-court set, taking turns standing there dribbling for 6-7 seconds before passing to someone else. Which is how at one point in Q3 they were under 25% from the field, plus wildly sloppy with the ball at times. Work in progress.
If things gel, they could absolutely be a tournament team, and I really like roster especially when Sam and Mir come back. As we said above, last night it felt like there was an obvious best 5-player grouping, but theyâve got a good mix of interesting players. The gigantic girl had kind of a rough night, but two of her TOs were Shedrick-grade questionable calls, imo, and she had a couple really nice passes amount to nothing because the team couldnât hit an open outside shot to save their lives for most of the game. And I have a soft spot for Pauley who, uh, doesnât really look like a high-level D1 athlete but can actually kinda do everything.
Also, McGheeâs athleticism is insane. I was sitting right next to the tunnel she went charging down after the ball at the end of Q3. She ended up shockingly far down the tunnel and just annihilated a poor security guard. Actually looked like she was hurt for a minute, but I think there was more time left on the clock than she realized. UMES ran a possession, got fouled, and were setting up for the free throws before she got back onto the court. People were like âUh, shouldnât someone at least check on her?â but then she popped up and seemed ok.
Thatâs awesome. Good job getting her started early. Itâs great for girls to see the opportunities in womenâs sports, but I think whatâs really valuable is when they see that their dads are into it.
My daughter (10th grade) considered getting back into basketball this year, but ultimately decided nothing can interfere with her cross-country training. Runners are hardcoreâŚ
For sure. I love watching basketball with her and she seems to enjoy it to this point. Itâs also fun to see her reaction seeing womenâs ball vs. the menâs game. Seems to make it hit home a little more. I also have the added bonus of her mom being a former college basketball player so she gets to see the interest from both of us.
