šŸˆ Virginia at Coastal Carolina, W, 43-24, 3-1 (1-0 ACC), Saturday, 21 September 2024, 1400, ESPN+

This is an underrated ability. The question now is if he can get better-than-mid-level players to come here. And that may rest in large part on whether we can give recruits on-the-field evidence that this program is turning a corner.

Vegas getting behind the Hoos interesting. Two weeks in a row for that.

I mean we hired a 2x nationally championship and Broyles award winning AHC/OC. I think a lot of people use hindsight when they look at the Elliott hire. Those guys are typically not easy to hire.

Shawn Moore:

He still needs time to figure it out. It’s going alternate between brilliant and dopey until he sufficiently removes the dopey.

But I’m seeing progress in many areas and I think we stay the course. If we keep switching coaches and schemes and QB’s, we’re never gonna get anywhere. Keep building around AC and see where we are at the end. And keep uncovering developable talent on the recruiting front.

But 0 actual head coach experience… I mean the year before he did have the Tennessee interest but it was either us or Duke. I think we could potentially swim for bigger fish than competing directly with Duke for our next coach (while also fully understanding we won’t compete with Bama, Georgia, tOSU etc.)

Also I’m fully rooting for Elliott to be successful I just think the way is paved for better than expected if that becomes a situation.

Cple things.

I think it’s a disservice to compare Shawn to AC. The game is completely different a QB attempting 421 passes and completing 55% of them for their career will get them bench and the coach fired in today’s era. For comparison AC is 225/349 for 64% in 11 games. Not a knock on Shawn, but it’s apples and oranges compared to what UVa needs AC to do.

AC has grown and he will continue to develop. However, he needs to be better now he needs it and the team needs it. 4 picks through 3 games won’t cut it for any QB on any program especially one that is depending on the QB to be great. The accuracy on the deep ball that will improve over time but he has to read coverages better and make better decisions with the ball.

This isn’t 2003. Duke is our competition right now until we prove otherwise. And that’s not unique to Tony. Duke has arguably been a better program than us for some time now.

I think the comparison is very appropriate, as someone there for Shawn’s career. Perhaps the most electric and athletic QB UVA had ever seen other than Majik, who was also erratic at times. Not only does a guy have to learn the college game at that speed, he also has to consider when to deploy his athletic gifts. Muskett doesn’t have that choice. He’s a manage-the-game, don’t-make-mistakes veteran who was 0-3 with a pick against Richmond.

You say AC needs to improve if this team’s going to do well. While that’s true, I’m looking at a 3-yr window of getting UVA back to a consistently competitive program and most preferredly without gimmicky schemes that we saw before.

I think we’re talking 2 different things here. Duke having been better recently and which job is better and who is better positioned to hire when either job opens is 2 different things.

Sure Duke has been better recently and for a stretch but if you’re looking at which job is more attractive to a potential coach I really don’t think it’s all that close especially now that facilities are built.

I have to believe the job of evaluating the hoos goes to the new guy. ā€œI don’t want to touch that one, let’s get Timmy to do itā€

I wish I knew from one week to the next which version of our FB team will show up, can’t imagine that mystery is appealing to the odds makers.

Yeah we might be the worst P5 program not named Vanderbilt rn

I wish I knew who was showing up quarter to quarter.

@NorVaHoo i understand and appreciate your opinion. But ai think it’s a disservice to both men to compare AC ans Moore. Outside of being 4 yr players at Virginia the comparisons stop. I think AC is and should be the guy for Virginia right now. He also has to play a lot better now. The days of the 4 yr build are disappearing and young QBs are expected to do more earlier and all qbs are expected to do more in general. Look at ACs stats he trails Shawn by about 100 pass attempts and hes only played 11 games to Shawns 4 yrs.

The game has changed.

Shawn may have been my favorite player as a kid, but we’re talking about 35 years in the past. Were even half the posters on this board alive when Shawn played for us?

See I don’t think this is true. I just pointed out that we probably shouldn’t be talking down on Duke. Elliott chose UVA for a reason.

We’re actually a much more attractive job than a lot of P4 schools if you believe we have a landing spot in the SEC if things get crazy (which I think we do). My point is more that Elliott was a pretty good hire but the next hire could easily just be the next Elliott and have the same issues he’s had. We’re not getting a sure thing.

Stanford. We beat Wake. Mississippi State, Purdue, UCLA and Houston are in the conversation too.

That was 35 years ago?! That can’t be right. It’s been 35 years since I was in college? How the hell did that happen

Enjoy it while you can ,lol.I’m older than you and remember that time period well. We had a lot of good players. Herman Moore was my favorite at that time .Great wide receiver who played a long time in the NFL

Yeah I think the current meta in coaching hires is head coaches that have won at multiple lower levels. Those hires seem to be doing really well recently (DeBoer, Leipold, Cignetti, etc.)

The devotion to the Clemson way has always bothered me. From his opening press conference he made some comment along the lines of how he’s going to show us how they do things at Clemson and it didn’t sit right with me. Maybe it’s my personal distaste for Dabo, but I don’t want to be a mini Clemson, and I don’t think their approach would work for us anyways.
