šŸ€ Virginia vs Campbell, W, 65-56, 1-0 (0-0 ACC), Wednesday, 6 November 2024, 1900, ACCNX

I have different viewpoints on this depending on whether I look at the particulars, or the aggregate:

Particulars:

  • Perry - wasn’t about Bliss; when you get a chance to get a potential NBA guard, you take it
  • Warley - wasn’t about Bliss; we lost our 4-year PG vet and needed a steady hand (plus defense)
  • dai dai - wasn’t about Bliss; more about Elijah health concerns. We were on the fence, and my suspicion has always been that Elijah’s injury pushed us over the edge (both this year, and at the time at least, long term concern).

Aggregate:

but at 30k feet, it’s hard to see all three of those, plus Chase commitment (once upon a time), as a vote of confidence.

I figure for depth and competition. We brought in Nigel Johnson in 2018-19 and I don’t remember saying we were recruiting over Ty Jerome or Kyle Guy. Then got Kihei the next year.

Who knows how pre-college performance will translate, but he looked pretty darned good in AAU his pre-senior year against really good competition. Hard to imagine that guy we watched doesn’t have value unless injury or something has hampered him.

Because the facts suggested we weren’t. Whereas here, the facts have suggested that we have no idea what we have in Bliss and aren’t really recruiting ā€œoverā€ him so much as we are recruiting for a PG and he’s having trouble being considered for the pole position.

Just want to separate how I feel about Bliss based on his last real game tape: Peach Jam (Great!) and my inference about how the staff regards him (which is sorta: ā€œwell not now, and we are hedging our bets for the out years, and then hedging them again, and who knows about short or long term healthā€)

We will see about Bliss. I’m concerned about health. But I also think in the portal era, you need to add multiple guards each year (via HS or portal) no matter what. I think the concept of ā€œrecruiting overā€ doesn’t really apply in this era. I don’t think our pursuit of Cam Ward or Tre Singleton had anything to do with how we felt about Cofie, for instance.

Please stop it. Your logic is hurting my feelings.

That’s what bothers me above Bliss. He looked great in the Peach Jam and got me excited. He’s not quick but could get his shot off and always seemed to make the right play. Ever since then all I’ve heard about him is worrying. What went wrong?

Edit! I remember at that time thinking that on a court full of 5 stars he was the best player

One familiar name on the Campbell roster. Eric Van Der Heijden, starting center from Raleigh. He’s on school #3, sorta 4. Originally committed to Louisville, flipped to Ole Miss when Chris Mack left, then to UNC-Wilmington for 2 years, now at Campbell. Barely played at any of the above.

Former high major guys are a theme among their transfer newcomers. PF Terren Frank at his 4th school, began with stops at TCU and Vandy. And Icelander Bragi Gudmundsson, formerly of Penn State, led them with 15 in the opener.

If anyone wants to shake hands tonight… just DM me and I’ll find you!

Definitely good to put faces to names… at the moment I picture you all, and that includes Tu, as middle-aged semi-balding men with beer guts.

If you’re female… whatever the middle aged female stereotype is.

Prove me wrong!

More pizza than beer, but otherwise I’ve been owned. :joy:

You know what I looked like 20+ years ago, I’d hate to spoil that memory with middle aged reality.

I would actually love a demographic survey of LRA sometime. I feel like it probably skews a little younger than one might think. Definitely heavily male by my estimate though

Some of us are dumb enough to have our headshots on this website. Still not sure it would help anyone accurately guess my age.

'Twas the night before basketball, in the heart of Virginia,
The fans filled the arena, excitement was a winner.
No Tony Bennett on the sideline, a sight so strange,
A new coach at the helm, with tactics to arrange.

The players were restless, each dribbling with care,
Imagining the plays that would soon fill the air.
The uniforms gleamed in the bright arena light,
As they dreamed of victory, ready for the fight.

The banners hung high, each telling a tale,
Of triumphs and glory, of hard work that won’t fail.
But this season felt different, a fresh start to find,
With new hopes and dreams, and a spirit combined.

The crowd began buzzing, the energy soared,
For the love of the game, they would never be bored.
Though missing their leader, they’d rise to the test,
With heart and with hustle, they’d give it their best.

So here’s to the players, the fans, and the cheer,
To the spirit of Hoos, we’ll hold ever dear.
For basketball’s magic, it still will ignite,
'Twas the night before Virginia, and all felt just right.
