🏀 Virginia vs Coppin State, W, 62-45, 2-0 (0-0 ACC), Monday, 11 November 2024, 1900, ACCNX

Probably a fair point. It’s the downside to playing so much, so early.

Diakite played 15-20 mins alongside guys like Wilkins, Salt, Hunter and Key his first 3 years. No one complained about him because he wasn’t an essential piece and was still developing.

Shed’s first year was the Huff Hauser Murphy year and with those 3 he wasn’t expected to do much. By his second year all we had was Gardner and sorta Franklin, so more was expected of him and he did start to receive criticism especially because the offense was pretty painfully bad.

Shedrick’s issues were different. I think a lot of us wanted to see more of him and the DNPs overwhelmed the rest of the conversation around him. Also foul trouble.

I think your “good at the stuff that makes bigs great, but bad at the stuff that makes bigs good” is my preferred framing for thinking about Blake. His strengths line up in some ways with what modern bigs are asked to do defensively but his weaknesses are with traditional big man stuff. I personally have a lot of patience with him, I think his 99th-percentile developmental outcome is “taller Isaiah Wilkins,” which would be an amazing player, but one with some defined weaknesses.

Back to the game tonight, I think the answer is ‘no’ but for @Jerome or anyone at the game the other night did Bliss shoot around/warm up? or was he parked on the bench in sweats? And if parked on the bench was he in a boot?

I am just grasping at straws, but after the other night I need to see this guy play

I got you. Bliss did not warm up or shoot, was in sweats standing under the basket. I was actually more concerned in pregame because I didn’t even notice him down there at first. Didn’t appear to have a boot on, looked like sneakers under the sweatpants.

Definitely interested in whether or not Bliss plays tonight - would love to get some game time minutes against a team like Coppin St. for him

@DFresh11 hows Elijah doing with his knee? Could use him this year big time!

Wish we had a vague idea of the Bliss timeline. At least with X we know he’s out for the year.

They said hes doing great. Been “cleared” but not sure what cleared means.

Also loves UVa and team etc.

Wish Eli was playing badly. Feels like bc of Fresh, and now this board, he’d be the fan favorite every night. Not to mention his ability to guard various backcourts.

Hope he stays. Will understand if he doesn’t though

Cleared!!! That’s awesome news. Best understanding (not a Dr), that means he’s free to start doing stuff. But how long it takes to get from here to full strength is a different question.

Game notes show same starting line up and no Bliss listed under ‘depth’. Sigh

“• Isaac McKneely (11 ppg) and Rohde (5 apg) were joined in the opening-day starting lineup by Buchanan (10 ppg, 7 rpg, 5 apg), and transfers Elijah Saunders (11 ppg, 5 rpg) and TJ Power (3 ppg, 3 rpg).”

Doesn’t mean there might not be a change tonight though

The game notes explicitly say “Virginia’s starting lineup against Campbell” so there’s no prediction there, unlike with the game notes for the Campbell game.

Looking back some, a history of early starting lineup changes:

  • 2023-24: Blake starting in Game 3
  • 2020-21: Reece and Woldo starting in Game 3 (I memory-holed a lot of this, why did Kihei come off the bench for 2 games and McKoy really started the first 4 games?)
  • 2019-20: Stattmann in for Woldo in Game 2.
  • 2018-19: Mamadi in for Salt in Game 3.
  • 2015-16: Marial in for Darius in Game 3
  • 2014-15: London in for Devon in Game 2 (injury kept him out of Game 1 I think, so maybe doesn’t count)
  • 2013-14: London in for Justin Game 3
  • 2012-13: Jesperson in for Justin Game 2; there were a lot of changes going on that season.

More early changes than I would have guessed without looking.

Kihei may have had a disciplinary thing? Was only vaguely referred to, I think.
