šŸ€ Virginia vs Duke, L, 80-62, 13-13 (7-8 ACC), Monday, 17 February 2025, 2000, ESPN

Idk if I really subscribe to that line of thinking… the way I see it let the 2 young bucks go at it. The refs are going to call it however they’re going to call it and I don’t trust either Blake or Cofie to match up on Maluach. I’d rather set the tone of physicality or atleast try to match what we know he’s going to bring.

Edit to expand on the thought: I can see where it would be viewed as a gamble but ARob is pretty good in his own right of drawing fouls. Duke changes when they can’t have the 7’2ā€ guy on the court, I’d take a chance on ARob getting the fouls drawn.

Think sides frustrates dukes freshman tonight?

I think it’s our best chance. I’d play ARob and Cofie as much as we can and just try to run those dudes off screens all game.

Do I think Duke is frustrated tonight? Probably not. But if Cofie has a big game defensively and we are physical inside and on screens (and a few guys get hot) there’s always a chance.

Let’s ball out!!

This is a HUGE game for Ron - probably the biggest game of his career. If he plays it safe, we will lose. If he gambles, and switches some things up, we will probably lose. What adjustments will he make? Do we go packline and try to guard them man to man and only lose by 12. Or do we try to do something different and take a swing at actually winning? Will be interesting to watch, but I would rather see some changes (zone, pushing the pace even more, trapping, other) and lose by 22 than play conservatively and lose by 12. Take a swing tonight Ron. Need to see some game-planning and adjustments from him and not the pre-planned substitution patterns.

Also, go at Flagg early and often and get him some early foul trouble. Want to see them play without their Superman for half the game.

Its wild that Duke has 6 games left, and KenPom has tonight’s game as the 3rd toughest one left on their schedule.

Ok, in response to DtW, I’m tempted to just throw our '20 squad at them and say ā€œHave fun with thisā€. And the Duke squad would hate it and be frustrated, but they’d still probably win so that’s no good.

Instead, lets think about it. This Duke team doesn’t block a lot of shots but has a ton of length and is tough defensively inside (lowest 2FG% allowed in the country), plus is solid at rebounding at both ends, they don’t turn the ball over, and they commit very few fouls.

On the other hand, they’re only ā€œgoodā€ at defending the perimeter and are only ok at turning over the other team. Also, their offense flows through their front-court. When Flagg and Kon are on the court, 52% of their shots come from those 2. So, I want rebounding, front-court D, and blistering outside shooting, plus as much size as I can get since Duke’s entire team is huge.

So I’m going with:

C: Huff '21
PF: Zay '17
SF: Hunter '19
SG: Brogdon '16
PG: Ty '19

I wanted to put Gill at PF and Zay at SF, but he was a 4/5 the entire time he was here so I couldn’t justify it. Plus, Gill was a beast overall, but he wasn’t the disruptive defensive stopper you’d want to at least inconvenience Flagg. I thought about JA at SF, and he’s a great athlete but he’d also be 2" shorter than any Duke starter and was only an ok rebounder. Can’t go wrong with Hunter.

Edit - Reece '24 would be fun at PG, but he’d probably match up against James, who is probably the single player you need to guard the least. UVA this year literally doesn’t have a player who attempts as few shots as James per possession, and they have multiple good ball-handlers so completely neutralizing James isn’t disruptive enough to Duke overall to be worth it. If Flagg was like 3" shorter I might pick Reece and tell him to just sit on Flagg the entire game, but he’s not.

It doesn’t matter what Ron does tonight. He’s getting his ass kicked regardless. That’s just the way it is.

You could either keep Reece on James and make him the free safety, which he was really good at or put him on Proctor and Ty on James. I like Brogs on Knueppel … and let Gill and Flagg go at it … I want to force Flagg to have to play defense every possession…. And Gill could wear him down inside and make him less effective offensively…. And if they try to play Maluach on Gill then Huff can spread them
Out forcing Flagg out there and creating space for Reece and Brogs to get to the cup.

Gill (can’t decide between '15 and '16) was a warrior who’d body Flagg the entire game and make him work every possession on D. And Gill drew a hell of a lot of fouls, so if he could get Flagg in foul trouble that’d be a huge win.

But I’m doubtful the refs would let Flagg get in foul trouble, and Zay’s ability to guard an entire zone of the court by himself would be invaluable against a team that passes as well as Duke does.

Edit - Also, fyi, I edited that paragraph a bit after you responded. Didn’t really change it substantively, but I thought I’d mention it.

I went back and looked at 2017 Wilkins…. I don’t think I was aware that he was both our most efficient player on offense and defense that year.
But I don’t think he would make Flagg work at all on defense.
I would just want 5 dudes who are a threat to score or create a score every time they touch the ball.

I gotta have Akil in there somewhere. Never saw anything like it on defense

Yeah 2013 Akil would be top 3 for me at the 4 spot.

I’ve been loving the positive vibe for the program over the past several games. Real possibility that a bad Duke loss will wreck that. Gonna try to separate a (potential) bad result from the overall trend of the team. The games that follow Duke will be key.
