Going to stick up for HGN here. Team has tons of potential. That win was solid. But if last years team played this years team 2nd game of season they would beat them handily. I think we can get there … but will take some time.

I do think the struggle against big 5’s will continue, though we luckily won’t be going up against guys like Handlogten every night. BB was fantastic in the paint but he’s a first year who will hit his fair share of struggles. He also can’t play 40 minutes a night, and I’m not sold on Minor being able to fix that overarching issue even if he gets more comfortable in the packline. Him at least being serviceable in that regard would help a ton though.
Outside of that the only things I’m really concerned about are FT shooting which is easily fixable, and the Reece/Dante pairing on offense which is only a half concern because they’re genuinely great on defense. I was happily surprised with the result tonight, figured we’d take a close loss so good to get a resume builder and there’s plenty to like about how we played. Also this team is gonna continue to get better the more they play together, that’s really exciting to think about given how much talent we have.

TB was quite literally furious at CA. At the very end of the broadcast, before they cut to studio, TB is walking off the court, slows down, points at CA, puts his hands up like “WTF” and said “You called him over there”

Not just that, but a team that applied real ball pressure, especially on the three-point line and made it tough to get shots there. We’re definitely going to have to see guys like Rohde, Reece, and iMac be more aggressive attacking the basket but to grind out a win and still have plenty to learn from the film that’s only going to make this team better makes me pretty happy

I’m happy as hell too. Still can pick on things lol.
But really, when I look at all the things we did poorly, it actually makes me more optimistic, because those things look fixable, and we won anyway. So the ceiling is still there, the floor is higher than I thought.

Fwiw, if the call had been going Florida’s way, and Cory had gotten the refs to re-review it, and they changed it to Virginia’s favor… I’m pretty sure the UVA fanbase would be universally delighted by that and Cory would be a hero. So I don’t think “announcers must be neutral observers!” is the right take. That’s not why we’re mad. We’re mad because our alum turned the call against us.

Agree that the drought was painful.
However, in crunch time:
Tied 65-65 with 2:13 to play, Beekman layup through contact at 1:59.
Tied 67-67 with 1:47 left, Dunn follow off a Beekman layup miss at 1:31.
Tied at 69 with 1:18 to play, Buchanan fouled on a dunk attempt. Goes 2-2 from the line with 1:03.
Up 71-70 with 51.8, Beekman blocked/traveled at 28.1.
Up 71-70 with 12.3, Buchanan hits 1-2 from the line.
Up 72-70 with 6 seconds, Beekman fouled with 0.7 left, hits 1-2.
And we closed the game on defense with two steals on the last two possessions (both Beekman). Florida had only one FG attempt in the final minute (the heave).
We got what we wanted offensively last two minutes, and did what we needed to on defense the last minute.

Yeah. And I hated him before because he’s annoying af.
All depends how you want to look at it. I’m more about reaching the ceiling. They’re gonna be good. But right now the keys to being better than just good aren’t looking great. It’s early though. In the 2nd half, Rohde got up 1 shot. Dunn wasn’t much of an offensive factor. 24 of their 34 2nd half points came from Groves and Buchanan. That’s not going to be a formula for winning games in crunch time very often. The rebounding stuff doesn’t bother me long term, they’ll be fine there.
On the Cory stuff…if TB is mad at him, that’s wrong in my opinion. I thought he was yelling at the refs…why are you listening to him etc. They got the call right, so I’m not mad about that. The system needs to change though if they somehow get video on tv that the refs don’t have on their review screens.
