Virginia vs. Florida (11/10/23) 7pm EST ACC Network

Now, getting that rather tepid take off my chest, my impressions from the game.

Stunning how quickly the game changed when Blake entered. It was night and day. He’s our starting center from here on out. I said months ago that we could be really good if Blake was getting significant minutes by February. But I considered 10-15 minutes to be “significant.” But this, just wow!

Still would like to see more depth at the front court. Hold no hope for burning ARob’s shirt, but think that Minor will provide us some quality situational minutes.

Saw a lot of improvement in both iMac and Rohde in terms of confidence. Rohde was much tighter with the ball, and both played great defense. Laughed out loud at @Hooandtrue’s “Tony: iMac on Kugel.” But, damn, he was good.

Thought Dunn took some steps back on offense, but settled down a bit on defense. Still believe he’s going to get better and better offensively as the season progresses. Keep Shooting!!

Want to see more Bond, but a 6’ 5" PF was tough against this lineup.

Go Hoos!

Yeah, I hadn’t really thought about that. Since it was broadcast on ACCNx, and it was the ACCN broadcast team, I figured that the league would have some authority here. But I know even less than you.

What I do know is, if it was Duke, the ACC, NCAA, FBI, IRS, and the FCC would have already issued strongly worded letters and Cory would be fired, audited, and fined. For what, I don’t know. But they’d come up with something…

Have you ever seen a color commentator insert himself into a game and influence the officiating crew’s decision?

no.

(I had to add the period because you have to have 3 characters. You can say yes but not no. That’s BS but you can’t say that either)

Ha. With how much trash they were talking throughout the game, UF can go Uptown Fuck themselves as far as I’m concerned.

My take exactly. It was how Cory seemed to encourage them to reverse it by waving them over and blabbing loudly while they were reviewing that was over the line.

100% agree here. Told fellow fans last night if you told me reece only scores 3 points in the 2nd half I would have bet my life the HOOS lose and lose big. Great to see Groves, Buchanan and yes McNeeley hit some timely shots in the 2nd half.

Last year UVA loses a game like this with Reece disappearing

Lord we can’t enjoy anything can we? If we win it’s because the other team sucks. If we lose it’s because we suck…

I think it’s worth recognizing this game for what it was. This was a contest between two teams returning very few players with experience within their respective systems. Both teams are relying on contributions from lots of new sources, be they true frosh, redshirt frosh, or transfers. Continuity is/was lacking for both squads. Both teams got major contributions from different players in one of their first two games only to have them struggle a bit in the other. Or, not make as significant a contribution. Lots of uneven performances. And, none of this should surprise anyone. While Coach Bennett tightened the rotation to eight players in the Florida game, the distribution of minutes varied wildly from the first game. This team is a work in progress, and that shouldn’t surprise anyone, either. I believe all of us were encouraged by Buchanan’s play last night. How consistently he can do it is an unknown. He is a 1st yearman. Regardless, he has displayed the most potential of a true frosh center since Travis Watson, IMO. Also, the fact that Andrew Rohde is second on the team in minutes played suggest to me that the staff sees something in his game. More, perhaps, than the first two games would indicate, but it is another reason for optimism. As I said, this team is a work in progress, and I’m not reading too much into either of the first two games. For the moment, I am more interested in how they progress and improve from game to game.

Doesn’t Harris have another year of eligibility?

You’re definitely taking what I wrote to extremes.

You have to be realistic. There were some good things coming out of the win but we remain a team that has some glaring weaknesses. Some of them can be mitigated to a degree but some cannot with the current personnel.

That isn’t clear. Does Dante Harris have the option of a COVID year in 2025-2026?

No you are wrong. This is the best team of all time. Literally perfect. Why can’t you just get on board with that obvious truth? Usually I don’t like to shout other posters down, but your failure to toe the optimistic line (we won 2 games!) leaves you in serious jeopardy of being cancelled.

I believe Harris only play 2 years at Georgetown and redshirt year. He should have one year after this year. I am not sure whether he is eligible for an extra COVID year. Harris and bliss should be our primary point guards next year .

Once again, literally no one has this opinion. You’re basically just arguing against a bunch of people who think, “hey that was a nice win, we might be good!” (which is something I think even you agree with).

Harris has 2 more years of eligibility after this season. Could be around through 2025-26. He’s the only player on the team who might use the extra year. Well Reece hypothetically has it available but he’s not coming back. Everybody else either is currently using the bonus year (Groves, Minor) or they hadn’t started college during the free 2020-21 season.

Hoop Explorer has the game lineup data in for the game now:

https://hoop-explorer.com/LineupAnalyzer?baseQuery=opponent.team%3A"Florida"%20AND%20date%3A2023-11-10&filter=&gender=Men&maxRank=400&maxTableSize=50&minPoss=1&minRank=0&sortBy=desc%3Aoff_poss&team=Virginia&year=2023%2F24&

It’s a little busy if you’re not used to their site, but basically our best (and only net positive) lineups from the game were Reece-IMac-Rohde-Dunn-Buchanan, and then the same construction with Dante in for Reece. Those two lineups were really really good: the Reece lineup was +0.5 points-per-possession, the Dante lineup was +0.6 points-per-possession.
