Virginia vs. Florida (11/10/23) 7pm EST ACC Network

Wasn’t paint scoring 18-0 at one point?

Edit: 14-0.

@lodger96 I wasnt able to watch before the first TV timeout but was amazed reading here that we lost the game in 4 minutes somehow hahahah

Is why this crew is awesome to live and die with in games here

We are definitely a donut team. Buchanan helps that some, but I don’t think we can expect but so much from him his first year. I do think we have a stud on our hands though for the future. I feel really good about him and Robinson with Cofie being able to play the 4 or 5.

The kihei special was burning all 10 secs getting past half court, now we’re setting up our half court set a lot faster which is a big improvement

Yeah, we can’t count on him drawing eight shooting fouls every game. But he’s drawn 10 in two games now. That’s not nothing — and potentially equal to or better than our 2017 donut.

Speaking of 2017, so long as Buchanan didn’t just have himself Reuter vs. Iowa and disappear.

They are currently leading 21-20, with 18 points in the paint at the under 8.

For those rewatching the game. Skip the first 4 minutes and the 11:58 to under 8 tv timeout in the 2nd half and you’ll have a fun viewing

Halftime. I get the whole circular reference aspect, but I think Florida is pretty damn good. The are big and athletic. I’m thinking they would be top 4-6 in the acc at least.

Also, rohde is really good.

Make up your mind.

Gotta think any first year under TB playing 36 minutes in a real game is on track for realer things

So, jake groves, maybe just try to lay it up next time?

I totally see it. It glanced off his knee. Our ball.

One thing that’s a little different about this team is that the defense doesn’t really look like a traditional TB defense, at least at this point. They are in the passing lanes a little more and they have more swarming activity than solid in-the-gap help, so they are trading more turnover generation for being less solid on the boards (and keeping teams out of the paint in general). Some of this is not by design (I think), though it kinda feels like the knob got purposefully turned towards “generate turnovers” a little.

I didn’t appreciate live just how much this was the case. Reece won us that game late.

So, been allowing my hot take to simmer, stew, and then cool to room temperature with respect to CA.

I’ve always liked Cory doing games, and still do. I take his perpetual self-referencing for schtick, and it doesn’t bother me. But like most color guys, he has a tendency to get caught up in his own hot take, or instant impression, and then not back off of it even when presented with visual evidence to the contrary. He is not the worst offender in this regard, but he is a repeat offender.

Case in point, if you watch Blake get fouled shooting at 1:03, on the possession prior to the out of bounds review, you’ll hear Cory proclaim during the replay that the block was clean–even though Richard clearly gets no ball on the play. He got BB on the arm just above the elbow. Moreover, he identifies Samuel as the blocker/fouler. He then goes on to assert that Kugel should have been hit with a foul on the body. From that view, I didn’t see anything definitive that showed Kugel bumping Blake, but the obvious foul was definitely Richard on the arm. This type of stuff is usually just worth an eye-roll.

What happened on the inbounds play, however, was clearly over the line by Cory. Pat Adams signaled to Lee Cassell from way across the court to look at the broadcast team’s replay. When Cassell didn’t hear him or respond, Adams walked across the court, pointing the whole time at the broadcast booth. So far so good, and nothing wrong with that from the officials. If Cassell asked Cory, “Did we get it right?” that would have been a mistake on his part and probably worthy of some form of discipline from the league. But if he simply asked to look at the replay, that’s legit.

However, Cory clearly waves them over and, while the officials are reviewing the replay, provides a non-stop narration as to what the correct call should be, starting with “We’re going to have our officials look at this again,” and concluding with, “No, that ball goes back to Florida.” Cory should have given them the space to review the call without giving them his blow-by-blow and his declarative statements on the correct call.

I think that the call was probably correct, but there is also a pretty good chance that the ball did go off of Clayton’s knee. I noticed that Clayton flinched his left leg awkwardly when I watched the play in real time, and then again during the numerous replays. That struck me as odd. Possibly it was because it hit his knee. Possibly it was just him reacting to the ball being swatted away. But the call was the officials’ to make, and Cory had no business inserting himself the way he did.

I don’t expect or want any public letter from the league a la Duke, but I do hope that the league have a has a chat with ESPN to tell the announcers to chill when and if the refs ask to look at their monitors.

Oh, and what a win! GO HOOS!!!

Also funny because bothe players “looked” guilty. Blake reached for the ball like he needed to save it and Bruno Mars on Florida made a face and looked away like he knew it was off of him

Cory did us a favor. Now you can’t have UF fans joining hands with Auburn fans claiming we won on a technicality.

The topic has been beat dead though.

Good take in general, but I have seen this, and not really sure if the conference has a role here? But I’m not sure who does. Wouldn’t the event coordinator contract with the officials? And with ESPN? Other than the fact that it’s in Charlotte, and I’m sure the ACC is happy that two of its member schools got decent games, and it’s broadcast on ACCN,** it’s not a conference game, and I’m not sure if there really is some governing body at play here…

** To be fair, that is a fair amount
