Virginia vs. Florida (11/10/23) 7pm EST ACC Network

I just woke up to this mess of a thread. Go to your rooms. NOW!

Your mother and I work hard to make this a safe and welcoming space for you and your friends and this is the way you act?

Don’t come out until you’re ready to apologize.

Spot on. I think of guys like Rohde, who I imagine by game 20 will be much more used to the level of play/at full aggression. And even incorporating Minor into a utility role. Tons of development opportunity, should be fun.

Of note: Team is shooting 42.5% from 3 thus far (17/40).

Is it getting hot in here? @Hoohoohoo is gonna be kept busy updating the LRA Villain Power Rankings.

Back on topic: I don’t know that we really get any more answers against a team like NC A&T, but we should see tons of of Minor in this one, so at least we’ll have some footage to pick apart. Pitt beat A&T by 50.

Just a quick bit of unsolicited advice. Try to keep your disagreements in posts substantive and free of ad hominems. If you have a personal beef with someone, dm them.

Then @HooticusFinch won’t have to send you to your rooms.

Some numbers I expect to change in there: Beekman will improve from 28.6 and Groves will come down from 71.4. But I think we have the shooters to get to a team percentage around 40.

If anyone thinks they can accurately predict what’s going to happen after the second game of the season, all I can say is that they need to go to Vegas. Immediately. That’s an incredible level of skill, and they ought to make some money off it.

I’d love to make a plea for just respecting other people’s approaches to fandom (within the margins of reasonableness).

Like, I enjoy analyzing good and bad after wins and losses alike. It’s how I digest the game. After Florida I was pumped but also going through some new concerns - new because it’s the start of a season and we are getting flooded with info.

Othe people process differently. Let’s kumbaya it - Go Hoos.

I love this board because even disagreements like this are usually pretty civil. It’s definitely the best UVA forum out there in terms of knowledge level and respect.

Seems like most disagreements just stem from how we approach our fandom. I and many others tend to view things more optimistically whereas others tend to view things with more skepticism. Neither approach is wrong at all.

For example, I was very high on Jordan minor as a prospect. Was focused on his production, size, and defensive and offensive accolades. @haney brought me back down to earth by pointing out that he played zone his whole career and was more of a below the rim player than a true rim protector. I expected him to start and be a solid contributor and ended up being completely wrong. At times I can be a little tunnel visioned (?) when thinking about UVA basketball and it’s nice to hear different perspectives.

Where I get annoyed is usually in visiting other boards where it’s very clear that a lot of the negativity is not met with objectivity. Gertrude redshirts and it’s constant “he gone” discussion because of Traudt or we lose a recruit and there’s a line of “I told you so’s” from the crowd that didn’t get invested. It’s okay to be optimistic and invested - it’s annoying as hell to try to take that and make someone feel stupid for it. What’s the point of being a fan if we can’t occasionally lose sight of the forest. So yeah I do get a little annoyed when @Galileo24 constabtly chimes in on recruitments to basically make us feel dumb for thinking we might land a 5 star or has to drop a “how good is Florida really” disclaimer. Overall though I like his posts and don’t think he means any harm by it. That’s just an example of something that gets under my skin and I should probably learn to ignore.

I’ve seen some great discourse about the Florida game. It’s okay to be happy about the win while understanding we have weaknesses. It’s okay to say F those weaknesses because this team is fun and young and the upside is too enticing to worry about weaknesses this early on. I’m going to work on being better about understanding the differences in fan approach and realize that not everyone is as rose tinted in their view as me. I can certainly use some reining in at times but frankly I just F’ing love Tony Bennett and this program.

We all want the same thing at the end of the day

Honestly this thread has seemed fairly tame. :man_shrugging: (what does that say about me?)

Also, I was rewatching this morning, and my daughter’s favorite player was Tyrese Samuel because he wears pink shoes. So I’ve failed as a parent.

Feels completely tame to me too. Go to the cesspool that is 247 and things take a turn so quickly. I’ve seen death threats and political discussion leading to shut down threads in the last couple of weeks alone. There’s also some major - and I hate to use this word but - “casuals” (looking at you Steelreserve) who just never fail to inject their opinion and are constantly misinformed. Deleted my account and haven’t looked back.

LRA is the best I’m very glad I have this place

Yeah 247 is pretty brutal. At least there’s some discussion. Rivals is a wasteland.

We’re UVA. I flag a post if someone refers to our “campus”. This thread is out of control.

I don’t know about that. Franklin and Ferber put out some pretty good stuff.

The discussion can get a little too personal though. I’ve silenced D-Wayne because there is only so much I can take of how much he lifts, his athletic and mental prowess, etc. And tugard is gone and it appears Arden is gone, too.

It’s not too bad — just quiet. Not a dystopian nightmare by any means.

Now TheSabre — I left 30 seconds after a certain game in Charlotte and haven’t looked back. No regrets!

I think he meant wasteland in terms of people there. It’s just very quiet

Rivals’ podcast is very good. Like some of Ferber’s writing. Never spent time on their board

I think this behavior frequently can stem from insecurity about their views. If you truly believe this team is really good, then hearing somebody who disagrees shouldn’t bother you in the least.

By the way, I respectfully disagree with your view this team has a significant risk of missing the tournament. I think we have enough talent to avoid bad losses in the non con, and the Florida win will go a long way for us. I am concerned about post depth, and I do think it is conceivable (though not necessarily highly probable) we could lose all our remaining p5 non con games. But Tony has gotten lesser teams at/near the top of the table in the ACC, so it’s reasonable to expect us to finish top 5 in the league at least based on my assessment of the talent on the team. Now, are we really good (my standard would be elite 8 caliber)? I remain unconvinced that we are but I am hopeful that we might be.

This is my analysis of an inherently uncertain future, and I am perfectly comfortable admitting I could be wrong in either direction. We could be terrible. Or we could be amazing.

It was truly hard to decide which guy bothered me more with their post-play complaining and trash talking after pedestrian plays between Samuel, Handlogten, and Kugel. I decided on Samuel because he definitely seems like a JAG, and the other two are actually good.

Looks like we gotta post this disclaimer at the end of every comment now lol.
