Virginia vs. Florida (11/10/23) 7pm EST ACC Network

OTOH, I can’t blame the refs for missing that in real game-time review. But it is another reason that TV announcers should not get themselves involved in the game.

If we could only spend 10 more minutes and look at more camera angles and really study trajectory and spin rate … then maybe we will finally realize that the right way to do this is just to rely on the ref’s flawed initial impression and get back to watching the friggin game right away.

Like when your team is down 14-0 in 4 minutes and saying the season is over?

Exactly, though that’s kind of mild compared to things that get posted in game threads. I avoid them entirely.

I don’t like attacking the players and coaches or overreacting to in game situations. If I were on those threads I’d be attacking the posters. I prefer to overreact after the game.

If it is a game I’m not able to watch, I avoid all information about it until it is over. I don’t check scores or go on twitter or view threads on the game. It reduces anxiety and helps me avoid the temptation of calling everyone idiots.

I especially appreciate @bhc3 s reaction to a terrible play by one of our guys. The “oh no Kihei no baby” or whatever hahaha

If the test really is indisputable video evidence, I don’t think the referee has the confidence or courage to overrule the call without Cory telling him he got it wrong. If the ref thinks the whole TV viewing audience has been told the call should be overturned, it’s an easy switch for him.

“But in order to overturn the call…” and here Dr. Naismith paused to dip his quill in the inkpot once more, “… the photographic evidence must be indisputable.”

It’s kind of a dead horse now. Whether the ref got it right or not is really not my beef with the situation. I am very old school in the concept that announcers should never interject themselves into the game, whether they turn out to be right or not. Like Tony said, “do your job.” Implicit in that is “don’t do the refs job.”

Obvious disclaimer, if the announcer sees something that is a hazard to the players, like some Twerp fan throwing ice on the floor, then they should interject with the officials to get play stopped.

Also, I think the college football Dr. Pepper commercial on that nailed it pretty well.

The Dr. Pepper commercials are the best thing on TV advertising these days. They understand college football fans very well.

my only real counter to this is Buchanan has been impressive now multiple times and seems to get it. Groves has played a ton of high level basketball and it showed. The two that have been playing well did just that.

This early in the season, it was encouraging to see them lift the team as they figure things out. Rohde will be fine. He hasn’t played this type of competition much and, when he has, it’s been as THE guy. Now, he’s figuring it out. He still has great feel for the game.

My point is - the team looked exactly like the reports have said. Buchanan and Groves looked good (Groves in 2nd half) and Rohde/guards are figuring it out. They’ll get better and better.

I have been very encouraged by Rohde’s play. He looks the part already and he will find his comfort zone for when to be assertive. The flying mid-range jumper he hit off a pick (?) against UF showed me he has that gear. He will get better every week from here.

It’s hard to pinpoint what a good UVA player comp is for him, or if there even is one….

But you just watch him and say “that’s a UVA player”. I don’t know what it is. He just seems like he fits.

Played 36 minutes too which is telling

Definitely know what you mean. He moves well in the offense and seems to make very smart passes. Just seems like he has a great feel for the game which is such an asset from a “3” in our system. When his offense starts clicking as he gets more comfortable, he’s going to be so good.

To add the Rohde praise, he’s made great decisions on his shot attempts. Like, really really good given his experience level and that he was the main guy on St. Thomas last year. I expected much more of a learning curve to fit the role on our team. Usually you see guys not have the best sense of what a “good” shot for them is … but he’s been great on that front.

They don’t move the same or anything but Devon Hall skill set wise. Hope by the end of the year Rohde is somewhere between junior and senior year Dev

Shayok is the closest comp I can come up with.

I’m far from an X’s and O’s guru, but to my eye our total team offense has not looked smooth/great the first two games. Before the militant optimists jump down my throat, this is not meant to be a criticism or player talent or schemes or anything. I thought the first game we looked like a new team in its first game. Timing, etc. not where it needs to be or will end up being. In the second game, I thought Florida was very big and athletic and able to disrupt our still gelling offense. I expect the rhythm of the offense to improve and think Rohde may end up being deadly shooting off screens. This week’s games hopefully give us the opportunity to make progress on the offensive front, just by getting in game reps running the sets against mediocre talent. I actually hope we don’t spread out the minutes too evenly and experiment with lineups too much.

Being one of those militant optimists, I would say it makes sense the offense will take time to figure itself out. A lot of new faces to blend together.
