My main thoughts on last night—

Holy shit Hillman. I felt like not enough attention was being paid to him this offseason in favor of the QBs and RBs, but that is the exact type of player we need to get pumping through the program to really ascend. I think he’s pretty special.

Ground game and bombing punts and celebrating… are we east coast Iowa with swagger??

Peyton Lewis 4 carries?? What’s going on there?? What G6 is he transferring to next season to be the undisputed #1 at?

I think we’re gonna wreck WVU tbh

So, who do we like best at RB so far? All have looked at least decent, but I really liked the acceleration/jets on both Davis and Vaughan last night. They got the majority of carries (maybe distancing themselves from the rest?) last night. I sort of expected Middlebrook or Brown to be the guys, but those two were really scooting and showing some fancy footwork.

He seemed fine post game had it wrapped but looked unbothered

Lewis just doesn’t seem to offer much different/better than our other RBs. His burst is ok, his power is ok, his vision is ok. Gotta earn those reps.

With the amount we’re going to run the ball, he’ll have his chances.

I like Vaughn. Seems to have the best vision and agility.

Middlebrook is solid - seems to do everything fairly well. Probably the best pass protector. Just doesn’t seem to have that big play ability.

Vaughn is really good imo. Staff raved about him all offseason and every time he plays I feel like he just pops. Best burst of the RBs on the team

I’m not sure there’s a clear #1 back on the team and there is three 1.5s that all offer a little something different. I love the backfield. Don’t feel like there’s a meaningful drop off from one guy to the next (and I definitely felt that a little bit when J’Mari took snaps off last year) which is great. Just next guy up and run it down their throat behind our senior citizens up front and occasionally let Beau slip out.

I’m serious can we brand ourselves as Iowa with swagger?? We don’t have the cornfed boys but we’ve got access to more skill talent!

Xay Davis was awesome last night. Obviously hard to evaluate given the opponent but he did what he did behind the 2nd and 3rd string OL. Most of his yards were due to him making plays rather than a wide open hole created for him (I’d describe Vaughn’s success as more like that). I’m still super high on Middlebrook (and X) but Davis is a lot closer to RB1 than I would have ever thought.

RE: DT depth, was there any chatter about why Cazeem Moore was back but Jacob Holmes wasn’t?

A bunch of Hillman’s family was in our section, a few rows in front of us. Almost a full row of ā€œHillman 6ā€ jerseys and t-shirts, and they were pumped. Cool to see.

Holmes apparently played arena football which ruled him ineligible.

Media is gonna rank Michigan above us now aren’t they?

Michigan, Oklahoma and Oregon will all be ranked higher than us somehow.

Honestly fine by me. I’d rather be undefeated and unranked heading into FSU.

Delaware up at the half at Vandy. They might be better than WVU lol

He also entered the portal after the NCAA’s fifth year appeals ruling in late August.

That’s why he entered the portal. He wanted to play for UVa but the arena league stuff seems to make UVA unable to take him.

I don’t get it. If he’s eligible, is there some dumb UVa specific holier than thou rule we’re imposing?
