Dude you worry about EVERYTHING lol
Unless we hired a guy with UNC ties, I wouldnāt even be terribly worried about a UVa coach being poached to UNC. Once youāre good enough to win at UVa, thereās not a huge upside to leaving. And thatās not really unique to UVa ā successful high major coaches rarely leave and even more rarely do they leave for places where they donāt have ties. Pretty much just Bill Self to Kansas.
Iād have been worried if Odom was picking between UNC and UVa if both were open last yearā¦
Who are the guys with UNC ties out there for them right now? Wes Miller not exactly covering himself in glory right now and heās the most notable one
Nobody is top of mind. They had an embarassment of riches in the Roy / Larry Brown / George Karl era, but those days are long goneā¦
Iām not actually really worried about this, but I donāt know Odom well enough yet to say for sure.
Iām mostly trying to turn this thread into a UNC coaching search one until they play their midweek game since we have so much time off ![]()
I feel like UNC may have been negatively impacted by the new NIL system more than anyone. For so longā¦literally decades they pulled top talent because of their history, then for a long time there was the MJ mystique. Now with NIL, kids are worried more about their $, playing right away, and MJ is just that old guy who the old heads say was better than LeBron.
Theyāve clearly lost a step from even 5 years ago. Part of it is having Hubert instead of Roy (or Dean) but theyāre not the Goliath as a program that they were.
In the 90s and aughts, UNC was the cool school to go to. In the 2010s and 2020s, Duke went from being the annoying dudes who slap the floor school to being the cool school.
Itās complicated how K and Scheyer pulled that off ā luck helped quite a bit. I also think the UNC AfAm studies scandal also helped.
More recently, Hubert being just okay hasnāt helped.
Duke becoming cool is absolutely nauseating. Hate it with every part of my soul.
I think UNC is still fixable, Iād chalk most of the problems up to Hubert and a lack of clear vision for the roster due to have 3 (overpaid) kind of GMs and a head coach, none of whom seem to have been hired in concert with one another. Theyāve still got the Carolina blue and Jordan brand and theyāre flush enough with cash. Theyāll get an invite to a big league. They can even probably screw up this next hire and still be fine.
Iāll be really interested to see who they go for, and if they fare better than Kentuckyās big game hunting, but I do think this has to be Hubertās last year.
They have a meddling board right? Or at least some meddling influential board members/donors.
I think UNC makes a run at Byington. Tries to convince him that thereās a hard ceiling on what he can accomplish at Vanderbilt. Not saying they succeed, but heād by my first call if Iām the Carolina AD.
They definitely overrode Cunningham on the chapel bill disaster. He reportedly had Sumrall agreed to terms before the board swooped in.
Iām not sure whoās responsible for the dumbass player personnel structure theyāve set up.
I think heās the best hire they could make, so Iām hoping the new nascar guy gets too big for his britches and does something stupider.
Itās also an open question who will be making this decision. Bubba or the new guy that has to live with it? A committee? Those usually lead to good results everyone is happy with. Have fun heels!
Would he bring Tyler Nickel with him, lol?
So more of a process than the BOV ran for university president?
Sorry, sorry - go back to basketball.
From their Reddit game thread yesterday it seems focused on the usual suspects from the āmake them say noā tier like Wright, Drew, Donovan etc. that UK just swung and missed on and then Byington and Josh Schertz
Wright and CTB⦠both would pretend it was a wrong number if any school came calling these days.
Maybe a hot take, but Iād skip past Scott Drew
It feels like with UNC it is never a close game. Usually, one team dominates the other. However, considering how both of these teams have played this year (tons of close matchups), it may end up being a very close battle. For reference, the last game to have a score difference of two or fewer possessions was almost six years ago on February 15th of 2020
So, just like the football search? (Or honestly, the search that produced Doherty after they publicly swung and missed on four other candidates?)
That would be great. Sign me up.
But to the earlier point on this thread about the Carolina mystique, I think that the Carolina mystique (and the Dook mystique and the Kentucky mystique) will be attenuated by the influence of money. Kind of like the SEC in football (and probably in basketball) - when they were the only ones dropping bags, or at least dropping more and bigger bags because other folks were mostly following the rules - they were a dominant conference. Now that everyone can drop bags, their competitive edge is shrinking.
If Iām Hubert and every opponent the rest of the year Iām playing box and 1 with the 1 guarding Hall but literally never guarding him and just doubling the ball everywhere. Make him score 25.
