The Hinson matchup reminds me of facing Georges Niang on the 2016 Iowa State team in the Sweet 16. Even with Dunn on him.
Also can’t just play the “they’re just freshmen who’ve never faced Reece / the Pack Line before” card. 3-star GT rookie Nathian George scored 15 on just 8 shots and racked up 9 assists against us. ND’s 3-star rookie Markus Burton averaged 16 points and 6 assists in a pair of games against us.
No more mis-starred than Lowe or Carrington or George based upon how they’re all playing as true freshmen in the ACC this year. Point being, defense is good right now, but it’s not locking up lead guards consistently, even rookie ones. Have to expect Lowe and/or Carrington to at least do some damage tonight.
It’s easy to assume that most opposing PG’s, especially freshman, will wilt under the Reece experience. But I have to admit that Lowe has looked very smooth and seasoned in the times I have seen him this year. Not a typical freshman PG. And that Notre Dame freshman PG did very well against Reece, so a Reece lockdown is not a given. Definitely a key to the game whether Reece can disrupt what Pitt likes to do on offense. Also Lowe has a bit of freshman physique, so Reece may be able to bully his way into the lane.
Statistically speaking, Pitt’s offense is mediocre not because they turn it over, not because the O-Rebound poorly, not because they can’t get to the FT line, but only because they don’t convert FGAs (and FTAs) at a high rate. The flip side to that is it means they are getting shots up, and if they can get hot and hit them at an above-average rate, they’re all of a sudden a capable, dangerous offense.
Some of y’all are talking yourselves into Pitt being better than they are. We’re playing at home. We’ll have to take two steps back to lose tonight and it would be a big time disappointment.
Isn’t the pack-line designed to stop guys like Hinson? I’m more worried about the possibility of their guards getting hot from outside, or our guys going cold from 3.
Hinson went 7-for-7 from 3 in Cameron Indoor: a couple of transition pullups, a couple step backs, a couple kickouts even with the defender having a hand in his face. The Pack Line is not designed to stop that.
Hinson has taken and made the most 3s in the ACC. Pitt takes a lot of 3s period. Hinson’s a tough shot maker. Can’t help off him but he’ll still pull the trigger anytime he can.
