🏀 Virginia vs Rider, Monday, 3 November 2025, 1900, ACCNX

Malik Thomas shot 1-10 from the floor including 1-6 from deep. He got beat up a little bit out there, including that cylinder call where he ate an elbow. But still: his energy and activity made him a positive contributor on both ends of the floor even though his shot wasn’t falling.

Malik Thomas played better vs Vandy and Villanova.

Excited about Grünloh. Will help a lot this year but doesn’t appear close to strong enough for NBA. I think we get 2 years with him.

Who gave him a sword in the locker room? lol

He was getting to the rim and looked like a better athlete than I expected. I’m still pretty bullish on him, not too concerned. Sometimes the shots just don’t fall. If he made 1-2 more 3s it would have been a total non event.

He’s much skinnier than I realized.

I swear to God, if I read that a player is out due to a stabbing, I’m going to question the practice of keeping actual freaking swords in the locker room during postgame celebrations.

Team already seems really close. Great sign considering we have an almost entirely new roster. I also think we’re doing a good job with the Proving Grounds and other content to help the casual fans get to know these guys. It’s a fun group

Regardless of how long Ridder and co are at UVA, I am thankful to each and every one of them for choosing to spend this junction of their career as a Wahoo.

Conversely, if we want to improve our high school recruiting pitch, we should be actively telling 17-year-old kids that we will let them play with kickass sabres in the locker room if they play well.

It’s even better than that, Chance played starter minutes last night.

Caption contest for that pic. I’m going with:

“Sword fight in the Men’s locker room”

Or it does because it affects your actual offensive and defensive efficiency metrics…. What it seems all other coaches have known

Same reaction here. I was like “What a great pic of those guys having fun… wait, is that a real F**’in sword in his hand?” He’s got that scary Braveheart look on his face.

Can’t wait for AI to take over announcing on these lower profile games. Pay a few bucks and use the voice print of a famous announcer. Will be much better.

Here’s generally how WAB is calculated: Breaking down the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Committees’ selection criteria - NCAA.org

Wins Against Bubble — A new metric being used by the committee in 2024-25, Wins Against Bubble calculates the expected winning percentage for an average bubble team in each game of a team’s schedule and then subtracts that total from the team’s actual number of wins. For example, if an average bubble team was expected to win 19 games against Team A’s schedule, but Team A won 20, it would have a +1.0 WAB rating. It’s the amount of wins you have minus the amount of wins an average bubble team would expect to have versus your schedule.

A team’s own actual offensive and defensive efficiency metrics is not in the equation. A team’s opponents’ offensive and defensive efficiency metrics are (this is how you figure out the probability of a bubble-level team winning against each team on your schedule).

Efficiency metrics are on the team sheet, but again, it’s really not clear how the selection committee is weighing them against resume metrics like WAB.

Yeah those metrics aren’t calculating our efficiencies but NET is. They can say its a sorting tool all they want, but it definitely matters and it definitely incentivizes running up the score through winding your efficiencies up against bad teams.

I would say margin, or really NET ranking, has more of an impact on tournament seeding. Just my read on it, no hard data to back it up. Getting in the tourney is more about resume, who you beat/lost to without much if any consideration of your own ranking. But once you get into seeding, I tend to believe teams with inflated rankings due to early season beatdowns get rewarded to an extent. Iowa State in recent years has gotten it down to an artform.
