Virginia vs Syracuse, Sat, 2 Dec, 1200, ESPN2

I don’t think I’d agree with this but, either way, it’s a good sign we’re looking this far back.

I really don’t get this whole “redshirt” issue, and I haven’t understood the controversy it has created here. WRT to transfers: As @HoozGotNext noted ever so long ago, the decision to transfer is typically based on the projected playing time in the coming year and not on PT in the current year. If a player wants more playing time, and doesn’t see it happening in the immediate future, he transfers. See Reuter, Abdur-Rahim and Milicic, among others. Even Shedrick might be included here, but he also would be part of the second reason players leave Virginia: style of play or role. That would include McKoy, Morsell, Shayok and Darius Thompson, but I suspect playing time figured into their decisions to transfer, too. At the same time, the only player to ever leave Virginia after their redshirt year was Isaac Traudt, and it has been reported his reason for transferring was not related to basketball.

So, in the end, what is the difference between redshirting and only playing four to eight minutes a game, other than to waste a year of eligibility. History would suggest that being active and not playing is more likely to lead to a transfer than a redshirt. Abdur-Rahim was in eight games averaging less than 5 mpg. Milicic was in just 16 games for less than 7 mpg. The bottom line is that Billy Baron, Teven Stevens, K T Harrell, Paul Jesperson, Marco Anthony, and Carson McCorkle all left in search of playing time and/or expanded roles. Meanwhile, no one has left because they redshirted and, yet, that seems to be a constant theme for discussion here. I just don’t get it.

Note - I just thought this was a cool pic for Taine. And credit to the photographer who captured it. Here’s the link : ACC Power Rankings: Where does Syracuse basketball rank after loss to Virginia? - syracuse.com
