Who's staying and Who's Going

What happened to make McClung transfer?

I think he was upset that Ewing mentioned he was going to withdraw from the draft and return to school. When hadn’t announced that yet. He said it compromised his evaluation period.

There’s also a ton of smoke around GT for a lot of stuff so I imagine that played in as well

Figure he is a better ā€˜fit’ for Texas Tech vs Georgetown - remember this kid is from SWVA- i didn’t see the match with G-town to begin with - but it may have been his ā€˜best’ offer out of high school. Admit I didn’t follow his recruitment all that closely. Was a great watch in high school.

I disagree with this waiver. He chose to leave. No coaching change. Should have to sit.

Get used to it. Anyone going closer to home claiming Covid as a reason will get a waiver. It’s gonna benefit UVA football

Andrew Nembhard leaving Florida. If I remember correctly we recruited him lightly a couple years ago

Gonzaga would make a ton of sense for Nembhard, right? They should be light on guards after the 2020-21 season (if Suggs is 1-and-done and Ayayi goes to the draft too), and they recruited him out of HS.

I loved Nembhard out of high school, I was pretty disappointed we didn’t go harder for him. Also really wanted his teammate Noah Locke

I think we were pretty serious about Locke for a while

Bennett loved Nembhard. Staked him out the July before his junior year. Just seemed like they never got much of a positive response from him. I think by the time he announced his reclass into '18 which everybody knew was coming, he already more or less picked Florida. He did a lot of interviews talking about the schools recruiting him but there wasn’t any evidence of it happening. Same school and AAU program as Caleb Houstan by the way, expect the same predictable reclass forward.

Locke’s recruitment drove me crazy. They offered him after an April live period, during which I don’t know that Bennett ever saw him play. He was interested. Came for a visit shortly after. Let’s just say he didn’t leave feeling like a priority to them. If you want to understand why UVA has shifted toward this structured recruiting strategy where offers are hard to come, by, cases like Noah are what brought it on. They made some offers to guys that year before they were ready to recruit them. Ditto for John Newman (Clemson) and Jaelin Llewelyn (Princeton) that Spring. 2018 was a process nightmare.

I remember reading that the coaches really liked Locke and his game but were unsure how he would potentially fit with Jahvon Quinerly on D

Aamir Simms pulled his name out of the draft. Clemson could be sneaky good next year.

I think so too. You could argue top 5 next season…

That’s huge for Clemson. They’ve had a few teams over the last few years that habe been so close to breaking through

That’s gonna be a wicked team to go 17-12 with seven losses by 5 points or less

Bart Torvik’s preseason projections don’t love them: Verifying Browser...

Those high rated freshmen bigs need to make an early impact, or someone like Newman or Dawes needs to make a big stride. They don’t really have an efficient offensive player outside of Simms. Simms is very good, and the defense should be solid, but without a second banana to drag the offense up a notch, I’m not sure if they can be more than a fringe top-25 team. Now…if Simms makes yet another leap, and someone else really develops, they might have something there.

I remember a scout saying about Nembhard that he looked like a Tony Bennett point guard back when we were recruiting him in HS.

Just speculating, but seems like Nembhard maybe wanted a faster pace than we play and stats show that he’s fantastic in transition which he wouldn’t have done much here. Ironic thing is UF slowed down their pace the years he played there.

Staying put made way too much sense for Braf Soderberg. Only way it didnt was if he hewas all in on being a HC
