Wild & Wacky Winter of Wooing Wings - Recruiting Rundown

yeah Im not a fan of the morsell leash at all. Is Morsell mistake prone? Absolutely. Does he make bad decisions? Absolutely? Is he going to overthinks even more to not make mistakes but that leads to more mistakes since he seems to be a huge confidence player? Probably. Of course you bench Morsell when needed but not after one or two mistakes.

I’d just like to see the team get more athletic, and he does a lot well. I’ve seen Taylor live, can’t speak to the other offer. Taylor is a good player, but I do wonder what he can defend at the next level.

McKneely is definitely an athlete but no idea about his actual defense. Watching Sam Hauser’s defensive struggles, I dont think we go heavily after a tweener like Tyler Nickel. Sam is a great talent and we are going to play him as much as we can since we have him, but no idea if staff want to go through 4-5 years of that kind of defense again LOL. Probably more Murphy/Hunter type small forwards.

Gradey Dick is a big-time athlete but not sure if we are recruiting him.

You dont really believe that about the 48 hours to commit do you. We would never sign anyone in the top 300

I want shooting at the guard positions. If Casey was the shooter we thought he’d be coming out of high school many of our offensive issues the last year and 3 games would’ve been avoided.

He’s a mental player/shooter. Struggles with mental hurdle on his shot. The short leash doesnt help.

Ben Johnson, Coach who recruited Klay Thompson was quoted as saying such. Obviously, they’d been recruiting him for a while. That was their process at the time at WSU.

As long as you can keep classes small, I do believe you can zero in on those who are receptive and likely to move with an offer. Some will drag things out, if so you may need to offer another prospect also.

I dont see many committing with a 48 hour notice. That will show some that they ain’t worth the time and trouble. I would feel disrespected

The thing I am most curious about is who we target for the role of rangy athletic defensive-stopper big. I don’t see anyone on our roster right now in the mold of Mamadi, Atkins or Mitchell. Don’t really see a Gill type either. Seems like Shedrick is destined to be a versatile 5, not a 4. McKoy is showing flashes, but he still feels more in the Isaiah glue guy mold (with significantly more offensive upside) than in the mold of those other guys.

Feels like that is something we will really miss if we aren’t able to find somebody for that role. They’ve traditionally been the backbone of the defense on our best teams. Also doesn’t feel like we have anybody with the potential defensive versatility that Hunter brought, but I guess we’ll see.

I don’t think they withdraw offers but add offers selectively, rather than offering everybody and his brother like many schools do. This cheapens the offer.

Oh yea, they sometimes do that. I think that’s a good idea

Just checked. Yup we are the only offer (I only checked like his 5 most recent other offers) with ā€œOfficiallyā€ LOL

Some drama in the MSU recruiting world.

Emoni Bates’ (ā€˜22 MSU commit) camp gets Jaden Akin (ā€˜21 PG MSU commit) kicked out of their prep program over some bad blood between the two.

Seemed that people always thought it was a long shot that Bates would actually step foot on campus but definitely creates a less than ideal scenario for Izzo.

If Jaden becomes available he would be a great get. I don’t think any connection for us other than we have roster spots.

Jadin would be a nice get! However, I would prefer to see things blow up and Christie get out of his Letter of intent to UVA. If Michigan’s Zeb Jackson leaves Michigan, he would be my choice at PG.

Yeah but he hasn’t exactly gotten the chance to show what he’s capable of, this year especially. He shows glimpses, then gets stuck on the bench. It’d be nice to see him get extended minutes alongside Beekman, and let Kihei sit for awhile. Beekman and Morsell give the lineup tremendous length, and can attack downhill.

Averaged 22 MPG last year. 14 so far this year. That’s plenty of opportunity. Last season was nothing BUT opportunity. He had what, one good game? Maybe fans aren’t ready and maybe the coaches aren’t ready, but I am beyond ready to admit that his offense isn’t what I’d thought, or hoped it was.

Yea I mean he still has plenty of time to improve so not writing him off permanently but let’s be real when we landed Casey we were expecting a London, Malcolm, Ty, and Kyle level of impact. Those guards were All ACC level players by their sophomore seasons. If Casey was what he was expected to be this team has way fewer question marks.

22 minutes per game does nothing with last year’s roster. He’s someone that needs to attack downhill, and last year’s roster allowed for no spacing. The best shooter was TW, and he took until ACC play to heat up. Casey needs to have driving lanes, last year there was nowhere to drive.

I think it’s absurd to give up on his offense this early on. If he got half as much leash on the offensive end as Kihei, we’d see a completely different player.

So not enough time with the right teammates to make him shine? Got it.

Agree to disagree.

And Kihei got a leash last year because there was no alternative. There is an alternative this year and his leash, at least early on, has gotten considerably shorter.
