2020-2021 Basketball Preseason

Well it seems we have NO body doing basketball so you’re right it’s not the case lol!

You are talking about correlation. I am talking about causation. Ie if the social media presence is this way, perhaps tony caused it to be this way, while also causing us to be the national champions and a sustained top 5 program Nationally.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see some hype videos from practice. I’m just not going to sit here bitching about it. Instead I’m going to be damned happy with what we’ve got.

It’s the same crew doing both. Do you think they get to basketball and just say “Nah, we’re good”? What do you think accounts for the different approach football vs. basketball?

Im glad the football team releases some practice highlights and those random freestyle videos. Makes all the difference on the field… #weaktrolling

Here is how I look at things. People like tu bring up what we did in the past. We won alot of games and a chip. That is remarkable. I NEVER thought UVA would be national champions in my wildest dreams. However, it doesnt mean you stop demanding getting better or improving. Because one way got you success. It doesnt mean you stop trying tu improve and getting better. It doesnt mean you dont look at OTHER ways tu continue your success. I tell my players, ALWAYS strive for perfection. Dont ever be satisfied, contempt or complacent. If you hit 98 out of 100 ft. Try hitting 99. Is 98 Great, HELL YEAH. ITS AWESOME. But is there room for improvement? So try for 99 out of 100. Than when you hit 100 out of 100. Take 110 ft and keep striving tu get better. That is what all sports programs should do. If Social Media is going tu help. Why not do it than say we won this way and its the only way OR we shouldn’t do things different tu keep us successful.

To be honest I feel like most of this discussion is arguing two separate points. The first point is that we could do a much better job promoting our brand on social media. The second point is that CTB prefers a limited social media presence and thus it is unlikely to change. Both can be (and IMO are) true

I have to agree with Fresh on this one. This has been a non issue in the past and it is coming up now because we are all starved for content due to this dang virus with the season ending early last year and beginning late this year. Tony puts his heart and soul into this program with very detailed attention to his recruits and players. Do you think self hype or program hype fits into the 5 pillars? We have a winning program, just won a championship and are competing to land top tier talent without it. As the old saying goes be careful what you wish for you just might get it. I am proud of the fact that there is a stark contrast from the UVA basketball program compared to the Bluebloods…

How does 3 additional tweets make you not humble? WHAT? It’s not the blue bloods. It’s literally every other program. Again it’s not just recruiting. It’s having pride in Virginia as being the program in Virginia. It’s respecting the fans who helped build this program by supporting it through even the dark days. It’s for the kids who would otherwise never even hear about UVA basketball but maybe that one tweet reshared by one of their friends opens the gate for them into what Tony and our program do. It is so much more than what some are making it to be.

I can imagine even if we land a big recruit, people will be like “See what would happen if we had a social media presence” in a sarcastic tone. Or they will say “Our limited social media is what makes us special”. There are mid-majors with more social media engagement. A lot of these are just deflections or excuses; it’s okay to say we have a weak social media team. That doesn’t mean you cant still love the Hoos and appreciate everything we have done and be a huge fan of Tony. It’s not black and white/all or nothing.

Last thing I can add here is that this year specifically with the virus and risks of anyone on or close to the team having a positive test and thereby shutting it down for 10 days or whatever the program wants to keep numbers very very limited in practice. I know Ethan takes this extremely seriously and TB defers to him when it comes to the health of the players. Adding a “social media” team presently is not ideal whether or not it would be helpful for all the reasons mentioned

Of course. That’s the only reasonable excuse I could think of. And if that’s the reasoning than I am completely okay with it. But how is every other program pulling it off?

Regardless hopefully we get some practice clips in the next week or two or anything really lol.

Just differences of opinion and I respect yours. I am just an old school head. Kids start building their individual Brand via social media at a young age and they should be responsible for it and own it, especially if they may get paid for it one day. Winning and developing players is the programs Brand and I really doubt there is a single D1 recruit out there that does not know who UVA. Why? Because of winning.

Always keep pushing Tu. By the way you have Steve Nash 2 on your team at 98 for 100?

Coach growing up always told me “practice does not make perfect BUT perfect practice makes perfect”. Sounds like the school you subscribe to Tu

No worries. of course. I think there are many points to be made regarding recruiting but it’s not what I had in mind in regards to the social media branding. It may play a minor role and a growing minor role when the players compensation passes. But I look at it more in terms of establishing our presence in the state, reaching people who would otherwise never hear about UVA who could benefit from having a college team to follow and learning about Bennett and our program etc.

Recruiting means very little to me (hilarious I know) in that i view recruiting less about “oh we need this X player” and more about “I wonder which of these kids are going to be future Hoos. Let me try to find out and imagine them being Hoos”. We will always be fine on the recruiting end as long as we keep winning and the only downside is that Tony will probably still have a hard time getting his number 1 choices like Michael Porter Jr/Cade Cunningham/the top 15 2022 prospects he reached out to but there are other constraints for us getting them anyways. Of course we should still keep recruiting them in the chance we find one who really clicks with Tony.

One of the things I’m saying is we shouldn’t be dependent on fan accounts for 99% of fan engagement online.

People in VA hate UVA because we’re viewed as snobby and think we’re better than them. That’s about the school in general, but also about the fanbase.

Now listen to some of our fans. He didn’t come to UVA because he didn’t buy into the pillars. He didn’t want to earn his playing time. He’s too out there in social media. He’s too much of a self promoter.

In this thread alone, there’s discussion that we’re above doing social media. We don’t have time to put out something so meaningless.

See any common themes?

Yes Fresh. For years I only had tu side chics. I became complacent. So I went for three and than four. Now I have six side chics and im still going tu keep striving until my Girl find out and kill me. LOL. But you cant fault me for trying for perfection.

I don’t want to see any social media if they are wearing masks. The site of perfectly healthy people wearing masks while playing sports is creepy and pisses me off.

Masks are to prevent the spread to others. Not self-protection although that is debatable. Healthy people can be carriers. Also the inconvenience of the mask for the athlete is also minimal

It’s creepy looking and I don’t want to see it.

That’s fair. We are all adjusting in some way to this “new normal” that we have kept hearing about for the last few months.
