2020 class thread

@HoozGotNext
Will that game be televised or streamed anywhere? I watched the last quarter of Montverde vs IMG. Montverde is very good. Cade Cunningham can do about anything he wants to on the court

Not that I know of

I had to unfollow Steve Smith after his 50th retweet of a Cam was robbed tweet.

Just to state the obvious. UVA has three former players who are current starters in the NBA, one of whom was the 4th pick and the other two were ROY and 3 pt champion. Also have a former player whose been in the league for 8 years and is still getting regular minutes. Finally, two other former players were mid/late 1st round picks. What they all have in common is none were named McDonald’s AA’s.

I was in HS think after my jr year and at a UVa camp back when Pete Gillian ran them Willie was a 2nd yr maybe, somewhere around that and we were playing some ball I feel like we were in Mem Gym but I just remember him coming up court all cool and collected and then pulling a Lance Stevenson swatting at a bug or something that no one else in the gym saw and basically falling out. 15 yr old me thought it was the funniest thing. He probably doesn’t remember it, but at that time I still saw college players as a different level than me and looked up to them and in that moment I realized oh they’re just like us and do dumb stuff.

Feel like I bumped into him a few other times as well but that story always makes me smile when I think back on it.

Speaking of McDonald’s All-Americans. UVA offered Whitney when he exploded two springs ago. He wasn’t interested at all though. His statement doesn’t specifically say he’s transferring, leaves wiggle room to turn pro. Tells ya his mindset hasn’t changed, so don’t look for UVA to be involved.

Kentucky freshman and former five-star recruit Kahlil Whitney is transferring, he announced. Averaged 3.3 PPG last & 1.7 RPG this season.

Beekman is a confident scorer. So are Abdur-Rahim and McCorkle.

Next year, imagine the all-newcomer lineup: Beekman, Abdur-Rahim, McCorkle, Hauser, and Shedrick vs the all-returning lineup: Clark, Morsell, Caffaro, Huff, and Woldetensae (or Stattmann, your pick).

Honestly, after a couple months practicing the packline, I think the newcomers would win that fight.

This is savage. :laughing: The Roselle Catholic (NJ) basketball account, Whitney’s school, just retweeted. Kentucky was recruiting another of their guys, '20 big man Cliff Omoruyi. I think UK had already seen the writing on the wall and given up. Bad blood going public now.

I am really happy that we recruited 3 back court capable players (G/SF/PF that can dribble and shoot with range) in the 2020 class. The one thing I have questioned about UVA recruiting is the number of slots that have been going to front court players (C/PF that can’t dribble and must play close to basket to be effective). Quality is fine and improving; not questioning that. In my opinion, the most favored grouping that Coach Bennett prefers is 4 back court and 1 front court players. The second favored grouping is 5 back court (if he has the numbers and that luxury and the match ups with an opponent). And the third grouping is 3 back court and 2 front court. Thus, it would seem that out of 13 scholarships available, you want a ratio of about 4 back court to every 1 front court players. Or around 10 to 3 of the scholarships devoted to back court players (9 to 4 is fine too). Right now we have a lot of front court players. We only have 6 back court scholarship players (Morsell, Clark, Key, Stattmann, Woldentensae, Hauser) with 5 front court players (Huff, Mamadi, Caffaro, McKoy, and Shedrick). This seems to be poor planning (regardless of whether they are red shirting). Note that I am even counting Hauser as a back court PF. UVA is in a position of not even being able to play the in the manner and using the combination of back court and front court ratios that we want. Only one five back court player combination is even available. We are currently overloaded with front court players regardless of being at 11 scholarship player level that we have or if we were at a full 13 scholarship level. I don’t get this aspect of our recruiting versus usage. Glad to see 3 back court players joining. Lots of minutes available for them. I think lots of minutes will available to additional back court players that join the team with 2020 class in the Spring or with 2021 recruiting class.

I don’t know that it’s a failure of strategy. Bennett would happily play a lineup of three DeAndre Hunters, a pass-first point guard, and a mobile athletic 4. It’s just that he’s never been able to land 3 Hunters.

Sort of a 2020 question because he is redshirting but has anyone heard how Shedrick has looked in practice this year? We heard a lot of good things about Hunter during his redshirt year.

Regarding Shedrick, everything I’ve heard has been damning-with-faint-praise: he’s making progress, working hard, etc. No rumors that he’s pushing Diakite, Huff, or Caffaro around, or showing off unicorn skills. Just that he’s making progress.
