Add a Michigan offer for Trevor Keels. Juwan Howard was in the house at DeMatha over the weekend.
Somewhat relatedly, which schools tend to have similar recruit targets as UVa? Seems like Michigan (at least under Beilein) and Villanova are common sights when looking at UVaâs top targets in recent years.
Villanova would top the list. Maryland just based on geography. Bennett and Beilein didnât cross recruiting paths much. Seems thatâll change under Juwan Howard. Ohio State is right up there too. Holtmann recruited a lot of the same guys at Butler, now has a bigger brand to sell. And then you get into Kansas and UNC. Theyâve taken whatever they wanted for the most part, but do value some of the same characteristics. I think weâll deal with Duke more now too. Only itâll be like with Henry Coleman. Rarely going head to head with them, just them trying to drag out our recruits into July when Bennett lets go and they decide which ones to select.
Peyton Watson highlights from last night. Coach Williford makes a couple brief background cameos.
Quick feet. Lots of bravado. . . I have high hopes for UVAâs own version of Holmes & Watson
Really hope we land Trevor Keels but Watson would be a great plan B.
What is our situation with Carter Whitt?
Basically Carter isnât really into being recruited right now. Indiana has been trying hard to get him to visit, wonât budge. Heâs just waiting until after the season to see what his options are. I donât think UVA would be open to him right now, but theyâre still in touch. If they were to lose a guard, maybe.
Any idea on the next step with Keels? He strikes me as having the highest odds of making an early-ish commitment.
Keels is probably the least likely to make an early commit. I think that would be Reid.
Weâre gonna have to hold on tight for a months with Keels and hope CTB can pull his summer magic again
I use this analogy all the time. Each recruitment is like a boxing match. Theyâre all scheduled to go the full 10 rounds, ending next Fall. If you wanna win early, itâs gotta by a decisive knockout. Recruits donât decide early, they just donât see the point of continuing.
Keels is a Takeover program guy. By that I mean he doesnât just play for their AAU team, he was brought up in it. Theyâre very good at maxing out a recruitment. When things start getting stale, new offers stop flowing, schools are backing off, thatâs when heâll probably end it. Wonât even be allowed under consideration until April.
This is a new one.

Highlights of DaRon Holmes from their Thanksgiving weekend tourney in Chicago. He went up against UNC commit Walker Kessler in the title game.
Interview from this past weekend. He talks about all his visits, including Virginia.
Coach Bennett is at the Steward School tonight watching Efton Reid.
And thereâs the big one. Duke just offered Trevor Keels. Not over but this is a different game now.
Whoa, a âsky hookâ at this point in his career. . . very nice!
Explain, specific to Trevor. Does a Duke offer change what heâs looking for in a school or coach? Does it change his relationship with Tony? I donât know if Trevor is a 1,2 or 4 year guy, but Iâd be comfortable beating Ks not coaching in 2025 or maybe 2023 for that matter
Also pretty sure Duke has 21â SG offers out to several other higher rated guys
For now, it only changes the process. Basically any hope of UVA or Villanova closing this out by early summer is at the mercy of Coach K. I know fans donât want to hear this but the fact of the matter is Duke and Kentucky are seen differently than everyone else. As if theyâre at another level. Theyâre selling a different product. It goes beyond development or playing style, and into the added value of potential stardom there.
After that, it depends on Dukeâs treatment. Offers need to be backed up with effort eventually or itâs meaningless. Granted, Duke does play by slightly different rules. If Duke wants, they can turn this into a full blown marathon, where we have to spend many times more effort to keep up. UVA likely wonât participate in that. Keep in mind, we donât exactly offer the rosiest roster situation either.
Thats a great answer to what I was gonna ask. Why Duke.
