Yeah, but if he goes on the trip, he’d miss all the pre-draft and summer league stuff where all the foreign scouts evaluate guys to play overseas. And it’d be too late to transfer with immediate eligibility. So if he goes on the trip, his only real option to play next season is with us or a really low level foreign league where someone can pull some strings for him.
Also presuming that there’ll be fewer Euro spots for Americans next season with no one wanting to play in Russia and Ukraine probably not fielding a league.
I used to feel my arteries clogging just smelling The White Spot as I walked by it. LOL!
Whoa… I just looked it up online… did they drop White from their name? So now it is just The Spot?
Also… I didn’t know the origin of the name… call me an ignorant alum if you’d like…
“Dunsmore found an available location at the southern end of the famed UVA Corner, which for many decades had been a gathering spot for the UVA community. The small storefront at 1407 University Avenue had been occupied by the University Beauty Salon since 1936. When the salon left the site for an adjacent space next door, they took their main salon chair with them, leaving a large circular spot in the tiled floor. With no replacement tiles to repair the resulting gap, the spot was filled with white paint instead. And thus, “The White Spot’ was born.”
Regarding the “temper your expectations” sentiment for next year’s class (not really sure what to think but thats why i did this). I wanted to try and find a reasonable expectation.
Using 24/7 composite rankings
Note that the ratings (miss, single, double, triple, homerun) are an absolute scale, not relative to their ranking, since at the end of the day, the coach gets who is capable of getting
Overall, Tony has “missed” on top 100 guys only 3/14 times (21%)
2 of the 3 misses have come since 2019
When he gets a hit, it’s usually at least a double (9/11, 82%)
For guys from 100-200 (like Dunn), his miss rate is (5/8, 62.5), we haven’t had a hit since the 2014 class.
So I’d say a reasonable expectation is that 2 of Traudt Bond Mckneely turn into very good players for us and 1 doesn’t work out. Dunn probably has somewhere around 40-50% chance of being a good player for us.
Biggest takeaway from this for me is just that it emphasizes how our development style has really been hurt by modern college basketball transfer rules. Can’t keep guys like Hall, Salt etc. around and wait til they become older and better to play them (example: McKoy).

Alright, since the season is over, I was able to update the first year playing time chart. It is below, along with the total minutes played over the rest of the player’s career and the minutes played per season for the rest of their career (this is in there so you can see that guys who left early were still big contributors - e.g. Hunter’s total career minutes are low because he left early, but obviously his contribution was huge). Guys who red shirted are italicized.
In terms of guys currently on the roster on a solid track, Reece obviously is following the track of a major contributor. Kadin is also following a fine track - he’s a big, so his expected first year minutes are way lower anyway, plus his illness cut his first year minutes down significantly. He’d probably would have been at or above Jack Salt and Jay Huff’s minutes played his first year if not for mono, and the minutes he played this last season are already more than Jay and Jack averaged per season after their first years.
As for the rest of our current roster, Igor and Taine have now joined Carson in having played extremely low minutes for first year guards, and Carson played extremely little his second year (even if you consider his first year a ‘red shirt’, his second year total would still be extremely low for a first year of playing time, falling between Kody Stattmann and BJ Stith). None of them got close to Devon Hall’s 244 minutes played, which is the lowest for a guard who became a big-time contributor. Although if you define Kody as a significant contributor and a guard, he provides one other example. And if you define Igor as a big, then things look somewhat less negative.
If you want to be pessimistic about it, you could say that there is no precedent (besides Kody) for guards playing as little as the Ms did in their first years and becoming contributors. If you want to be optimistic, you could say that since red shirts aren’t as much of a thing anymore, at least for Taine and Igor, we could just write this off as a red shirt year. Or you could just say that the sample size is too small and each player follows his own path so we can’t draw any conclusions about future guys based on past guys. So choose your own adventure on that one.
I sorta quibble with Diakite as a double and not a triple and Shayok as a miss. He was a key player for an NCAA tournament team and helped us avoid embarrassment at the hands of UNCW in the first round. Sure he transferred but he wasn’t a miss in my book
Shedrick the same ranking as Perrantes and higher than Kihei? Like, Kihei won an All-ACC award. We don’t have a natty without him. How can he be a single compared to some of these others. That’s some last night recency bias.
There’s some projection with Shedrick because it seems like he’ll be back next year and I see him getting better. Clark probably should be a double you’re right
Yeah, at least in terms of performance, Shedrick is probably a single (so far) and Clark is a double. But otherwise I agree, and good job putting the list together.
