2022-23 Out of Conference (non-ACC / non-UVa)

Oh I think it’s a smart strategy, but you need to have a plan B in case the opponent reads that you are just trying to get the ball over half-court and presses you to make it difficult.

My least popular opinion: I think TV Teddy is a good ref and I’m glad to see him ref our games.

Absolutely the worst opinion. Roger Ayres is very good and who I want reffing our games.

I would disagree with both the idea that 1) TV Teddy is good, and 2) this is your least popular opinion. I think you’re selling your other opinions short.

I generally don’t get too caught up in rating the refs, but I do think Jamie Luckie is spectacularly bad, and agree with htraylor that Roger Ayers is one of the best. Glad to see him able to ref our games again.

The skill level … insane!

I was always a fan of Ayers and Eades, too, but Eades I think just does Big12 stuff now (coordinator type role). Good to have Ayers back after his hiatus.

I actually think Luckie is ok, but our record with him is very very good

Naw- TV Teddy doesn’t really like Tony from what I can see. TB always seems *extra annoyed with him whenever he refs our games, and we know that TB is not the kind of coach to just ride the refs for no reason.

Why isn’t Ted allowed to officiate the NCAA tournament?

Broke a Covid protocol hoping to clear a test in order to ref a game from what I understand.

Ok, I had read the linked article but it wasn’t clear what he did wrong. I guess it was the part about Teddy staying in Indianapolis after the close contact tested positive. Seems a little severe to punish him for that.

Yeah I’m not a fan of him, BUT I think this is a step too far as it seems like he DIDN’T go to that dinner in the first place and thought that since he didn’t expose himself then he would have had a chance to ref? Are the OTHER refs able to participate in the NCAA tournament???

I think it’s a confusing article because it’s highly likely the “source close to the situation” is TV Teddy. And for understandable reasons, he’s not dying to make it clear what he did wrong in the NCAA’s eyes.

I suspect what he did wrong is the NCAA asked him to do X, and he didn’t do X. Based on his personality, you can imagine that he wasn’t easy about it either. It doesn’t really matter that much what X is. Bosses or whatever the equivalent is when you’re an independent contractor don’t generally like that.

(Coincidentally, this is the same personality characteristic that I happen to think helps to makes him a good ref – not caring what people think of you or your actions – but it also makes him a bit toxic to certain employers. I guess he still has a good relationship with Bryan Kersey, which is why we still see him. He’s not doing Big Ten games anymore…)

Don’t sell yourself short. You’re a heck of a slouch.

I don’t like TV Teddy due to the fact that when he’s making a call, he blows his whistle at least 5 times and makes everyone look at him. He has to draw attention to himself, which is the opposite of what referees should be doing.

So he needs to learn to simply blow the whistle louder the first time?

I don’t mind seeing Teddy ref our away games because he’s willing to make a call against the home team however bad the call may be. For example, I enjoyed seeing him ref at Duke when K was there because every now and then he’d clearly enjoy making himself more important than K.

Thanks - I think this is what I was struggling to express. He’s less lobby-able than other refs, and I used to think this was to our benefit (esp. when playing K, et al), but may become less so as Tony becomes more of the dean of the ACC…

I would like a little more clarity about this sentence from the article as well.

“Valentine was the lone referee to remain at the hotel, in hopes he would be cleared to officiate the Sweet 16 after receiving a vaccine.”

It sounds like after the close contact, Teddy decided to get vaccinated thinking that would clear him to officiate. I really hope this is true.

NCAA: Sorry Teddy, you have to leave. You might have Covid.

Teddy: I’ll get a shot to cure it.
