Tough break for Dook. Gonna be a rough rebuild for whoever they hire next given how many upperclassmen they lose and also assuming some guys jump ship to A&M.

Isn’t Duke one of the three teams we beat all year? I don’t know about a “rebuild.” Seems like there wasn’t much of a “build” to begin with.

Won 9 games last year and were in the top 25 this year before their QB went down with an injury. Elko was building something pretty good there but between him leaving and the fact that they have something like 35 or so seniors graduating I would classify that as a rebuild for them going forward.

Just goes to show, if we ever do get a successful coach, he’ll get poached for a better gig pretty quick. The hope is simply that he’ll leave things better than he found them. Like @BDragon has been saying, we’ve got a long road ahead of us.

Yup I referenced talking to Duke people back in Sept and they were preparing to fight for him. Followed up with a friend today and he said nonce A&M named their price Duke was out. And were looking for ways to turn those funds to a new hire.
@UVApride7 the more I think about it the more I think Elko had to go. He knew the cupboards were gonna be bare and unless he landed another stud transfer QB he may never be as hot as he is this year.
Plus calculated risk worst case 3 yrs from now he’s out at A&M $40mil richer and he can still land softly for act 2

Next year would’ve been rough having to replace all that production, but I think Dook was set up fairly well for the future. Have a 4 star QB coming in that is the highlight of a solid 2024 recruiting class, and Elko has shown an ability to land some productive plug and play guys in the portal. Had he withstood the blow of next season I think they would’ve been right back on track in 2025 assuming he was able to rebuild his OL depth, which is really all you can ask for at a place like Dook. I do agree that he’s smart for striking while the iron is hot instead of taking that risk though.
All of that changes now obviously, could see a lot of that incoming class back out of their commitments (and we should absolutely take advantage of that). I also think they lose quite a bit to the portal, gonna be a very dire roster situation in the upcoming years unless their next coach performs a minor miracle.

They had some pieces and I think Elko could have sustained them. But you have to remember how nuclear hot they were on Sept 30. That was gonna be hard to dupicalte and 1 7 win season destorys the mystique that can brings A&M money

This is probably true, but it’s pretty rare for a UVA coach of any sport to voluntarily leave and go directly to another school. I can’t think of one, but I’m assuming it has happened.
Well major sports have worked data welsh essentially retired. The next 2 were chased out of town and and the last quit. So basically the last 3 guys no one wanted…
Basketball followed a similar pattern JJ was chased out, Same with Pete and Dave and we hit paydirt with the rarebird that is CTB

True, but if you dig a little deeper, Jeff Jones had a pretty solid first 5 years here. Groh did pretty well the first few years as well. It seemed like Gillen was building something too after a few years. The fact that no one left while they were on the rise is worth something. Maybe I’m being too generous with their early success though. And I have no idea if any other schools tried to poach any of them.

Only one I can think of off the top of my head is Brian Boland getting poached by an opportunity to oversee the US Tennis national team. That ended up being a blessing in disguise for us though, our current coach is awesome and I’m pretty sure Boland got wrapped up in a messy scandal.

I get what you’re saying 1 the times have changed drastically so the coaching hotseat is a lot hotter.
JJ was an alumni in his first gig at his school in what was the top conference in the country. Not sure what else he coulda done.
Pete’s success was mid at best. He had a better resume at X.
All that said UVa does a good job of hiring people who are a fit and they compensate well so it’s tough to up and leave.
But like I said times have changed. Elko to A&M makes sense when you think about the money and his ties to the school. Kinda like how Urban always had a clause that let him leave to take the ND job. Some just hit different.
