What do we think the GTown shortlist will look like?

I think he could do better.

Charlestown coach if it was my choice*

Williford was an assistant there before joining Tony. But at the same time I think he can get a way better job

Agree American doesn’t feel like Jwillys nxt spot. High mid major or low major. Not a non major school.

That Foxhall mansion might be calling awfully strong tho

Two lists of Hoya coaching candidates I’ve seen, and my reactions:

  • Pitino - no, going to the Johnnies
  • Brey - no, he’s said no already (2017), and doesn’t want power 6
  • Kim English - no, too soon
  • Mike Rhoades - no, I don’t see it. I think he’s happy
  • Anthony Grant - (don’t discount that Jesuit network)
  • Ryan Odom - probably not, but still …
  • Robert Jones - no, need to aim above the MEAC
  • Mike Jones - no, need to aim above VPI assistants
  • Chris Mack - maybe, for the @DFresh11 content, but no, because, just no

Second list:

  • Keatts - no, hasn’t had enough success on court or in recruiting
  • Mike Jones - guy must have good PR folks to get on two lists. Still no
  • Matt Langel - but seems like a big jump
  • Pitino - nope, they’re building the heliport on top of Alumni Hall as I type…
  • Shrewsberry - but more likely ND? He’s an Indiana guy
  • Rodney Terry - intriguing esp. if TX makes a run, but I don’t see it

What happened to Ed Cooley? Is he staying in Providence?

Brian Hamilton with The Athletic has Kevin Keatts and Mike Jones on his Georgetown short list, and suggests they swing for Rick Pitino.

Why tf would anyone hire Keatts

Eh. He actually hasn’t been terrible at NCState. They got hosed in 2019 and should have made the tournament. If they had, and make it this year, Keatts would have had a personal 5-year NCAA streak and would have taken NCState to the dance 4 times in 6 years.

Given that it’s NCState that isn’t bad. On the downside, they peaked as a 9-seed so the ceiling might not be Georgetown-accepted. But he’s better than they’ve looked the last couple years.

Yes but NC State Is a storied program in a great location with plenty of cash. That record at say Clemson would be a little different

Is State storied? What’s been their high-water marknpost Tom Gugliata?

Yeah but that story ended about 1984

I’d say Jim Valvano’s program is storied

Close, ā€˜86. They made the Elite 8 3 times in 4 years in the mid-80s which is pretty good and have more nattys than we do. It’s not exactly ancient history, but it’s been a few decades. 3 Sweet 16s in the last 20 years.

Edit - Also, their last ACC regular season OR tournament championship was ā€˜89, which kinda cements that narrative, imo.
